Summary

There’s a devil on my shoulder, and every Monday morning she announces herself. She’s this delicious flame in my chest, a flurry of whispered suggestions in my ear. Suggestions I ignore...because every single one of them is about Ben Tate.

Ben—stealer of clients, evictor of homeless women, nemesis. Sitting across from me every damn Monday with his lovely, smug smile and his too-perfect teeth, the living symbol of everything I hate.

It’s been my policy to avoid him, but when a case comes into the firm—one that could change his career and mine—I make an exception. It means weekends and evenings by his side. It means enduring his smirk and his smart mouth and never taking the bait.

Until the night Ben says “Beg"...and that devil on my shoulder decides to make a few demands of her own.

Great enemies to lovers

Great addictive story and there are quite a few things that are not what they appear. They are both lawyers and enemies until they are forced to work the same case and things start to change. I loved how she managed to point out all the inequalities women endure and did her best to even the playing field.
It needs a male narrator despite Samantha’s narration being excellent and her male voice outstanding.

That banter though!! Perfection!

I got addicted to Elizabeth O’Roark’s writing with her Parallel series, and with THE DEVIL YOU KNOW she once again showed me why. Gemma and Ben’s love story was the perfect blend of what I love and hate in an enemies to lovers romance: Amazing, hilarious banter and sizzling chemistry I could not get enough of, paired with a slow burn feel … and one of the characters always seemingly being close to run. Seriously, Gemma gave me anxiety at times! Thankfully, she was written in a way that helped me understand why she acted the way she did, which lessened my annoyance towards her tremendously. Oh, and Ben … he’s delicious. Relentless and even sweet in his pursue of Gemma, slightly dominant, and just plain swoon-worthy. An amazing office romance with a touch of forced proximity and a truly wonderful couple, brought to life and enhanced by Samantha Brentmoor who did a terrific job.

Beautiful Story!

This is the third book in the Devil series. I love this series. Ben and Gemma's story is sweet, emotional, and sexy. I liked this enemies-to-lovers, and slow burn romance. Gemma is beautiful, and smart, but she was so insecure and was living in fear of betrayal because of her past! Also, working in a man's world isn't easy at all, and I liked her determination. Ben is very handsome., self-confident, and supportive. They are lawyers at the same office. Their push and pull relationship is filled with witty banter, and misunderstandings. I liked their HEA. Samantha Brentmoor did an excellent job with the narration. I enjoyed it. Elizabeth O'Roark never disappoints. #ValentinePR

Loved this book a whole lot, until the very end

(audiobook) I have mixed feelings. I loved this book a whole lot, until the very end. Warning, it’ll get a bit spoilery near the end, but I can’t explain my feelings without those little spoilers.

First of all, it was a good enemies to lovers story. Sure, it begins with a lot of lust and some angry-ish sexy times, but quickly Gemma and Ben more than tolerate each other as they start working together. They open up and share some personal details. Gemma sees another side of Ben and maybe admires him in the end.

We don’t really know about Ben’s feelings–at first–as the story is seen almost exclusively through Gemma’s eyes. But clearly learning more about Ben’s past and mind forces her to re-evaluate the way she sees him, and she realizes there were some misunderstanding.

Despite all her prejudices–somewhat legitimate, as they come from past experiences–Gemma was a great character. She’s dedicated, has a good heart, and wants to change the office’s ways. It was terribly frustrating to see how her bosses kept interfering. Her journey wasn’t an easy one.

At least she had Ben to help her. Early on, it becomes clear that Ben is basically the opposite of what she thought. He has her best interests at heart, though he has to hide it. Until the end, I thought he was great. I especially enjoyed the way he lost control when he was with Gemma, how she unravelled him. How he wasn’t afraid to show his softer belly, while still being a real alpha male.

But–here are the spoilers–it’s revealed in the end that Ben has serious stalker tendancies, and it made me cringe hard. Some of his actions were definitely cute, but others would put him in a ward in my opinion. Obsession isn’t a sexy trait. It kind of ruined the character for me. And it made me sad because I really enjoyed him until then! And the cringiest element wasn’t even necessary. I suppose the author thought it would be funny.

There was a strong feminist message that I loved, all through the book. Between fighting privileges and misogyny at her workplace, and helping women in family court trials, Gemma sure has a lot to say about women’s place in the world. But as you’ll see, she also knows that individually, people can be good or bad, no matter their gender.

What makes me give this book a good grade nonetheless is the narration. The narrator was absolute perfection! She made me shiver, she made me–almost–cry. She does an excellent job. And the special appearance from one of my favorite male narrators for a little taste at Ben’s mind made it even better.

A great addition to an amazing series!

The Devil You Know is book three in the Devil series and is the enemies to lovers, workplace romance story of Ben and Gemma.
Ben and Gemma are both successful lawyers working for the same firm and although they are work colleagues, they are enemies after Ben stole one of her clients when he started with the company years prior. The two hot headed attorneys constantly bicker and deliberately wind each other up, however, things heat up between them when they are forced to spend a lot of time together after being put on a big case together.
Gemma is looking for her happily ever after, only she has this ridiculous idea in her head that she wants a picture-perfect Hallmark movie fairy-tale, to fall in love and be swept off her feet by a small-town guy who will take her away from the rat race of the big city and stressful job and teach her to love the quiet life.
Ben knows that Gemma isn’t cut out for a quiet life and makes it his mission to teach her she’s worth so much more than that. Gemma, being a female attorney in a male dominated office, has to work so much harder to get the recognition that is freely handed to male attorneys. We see how Gemma is overlooked for promotions and how her boss tries to pimp her out to a top client just because of her gender. Ben’s protectiveness was beautiful to see but he also knew when to back off and let her stand on her own two feet.
Toward the end of the book Gemma began to really annoy me. She became whiney and insecure, and it just built and built to the point of my almost disliking her but praise the lord the moaning stopped. I think it may have been different had it been dual POV rather than solely from Gemma’s.
Samantha Brentmoor brought this audiobook to life and my goodness she does a fantastic job on this solo project. Samantha is an incredibly talented woman and her performance as Gemma and Ben was phenomenal. I felt every emotion the characters went through and always know when I see Samantha’s name that a book is in good hands.
Overall, this is a fantastic addition to the series. It isn’t my favourite book in the series to date and Gemma isn’t my favourite heroine but Ben and Samantha more than make up for Gemma’s whining. A beautifully written book by an incredible author performed by an amazing narrator.

The Devil You Know

From enemies to lovers - a cute, well written lawyer-story with a lot of ups and downs and misunderstandings, but in the end with a HEA.

Love, love, love this book!!!

There are some authors that write books that I just fall into that comfort zone with. When I discovered Elizabeth O'Roark, I knew immediately she was one of these storytellers. This is my third audio by her, and it is fantastic! Ben Tate is a lawyer, fast tracked to partner and the nemesis to Gemma. Gemma wants the partnership more than anything. To be the one woman with a voice in the all boys club is exactly what she wants. But Ben only sees her. Yes, he loves his job, but there is something about Gemma that he loves. Enemies to lovers, O'Roark gives us a love story that is beautiful. Witty banter, cautious hearts, troubled pasts and extreme chemistry power this story. At times I felt frustrated with Gemma, too hesitant and not having faith. Ben is everything. Good looking, caring and his goals exactly what any woman would want! It's an amazing story and I am in love!

I cannot say enough good things about Samantha Brentmoor. Her narration is a treat! She connects with her characters, has the perfect voice for each one and creates a world for me to escape in. I love her and always enjoy her talented performances. We are also treated to a prologue by the incredible Jason Clarke, giving us that boost as we start the book. O'Roark chose wisely and made this listen one that will stick with me.

Fabulous Story & Narration🎧 An Enthralling Delight

This is a fantastic ‘enemies to lovers’ office romance, and I loved everything about it, from Elizabeth O’Roark’s wonderful writing style to the fabulous characters and storylines she created to the perfectly cast narrator who brings it all to life from the pages to your ears. The story grabbed my attention right from the start and captivated it the entire book. The characters are realistic, easy to relate to and connect with, they were easy to care about too. Gemma Charles is an attorney working in a man’s world, she learned that valuable lesson at her previous job after getting burned. She also knows she has to world hard to prove herself and not show any weakness. She has put in her dues, made a name for herself and is hoping to make partner in the firm she is working for. Then she gets assigned to work with her rival, Ben Tate, the one who stole her clients and also has made a name for himself. He is a looker and knows it, he also knows how to get under her skin. But nothing is going to get in her way of making partner, not even Ben Tate. The chemistry between these two is absolutely electric and the banter, OMG, wow, lawyers have a gift with words and O’Roark does too. I adored both characters for different reasons, Gemma, too jaded for her own good, but she had a good heart hidden under the bitterness she was holding on to. Ben Tate, swoon worthy and yes, I doubted him and questioned his motives at times, but you be the judge of that when you read or listen to this book, which is a real treat in so many ways. This wonderfully plotted has the perfect balance of drama, both office and relationship, a touch of angst and humor, heartfelt emotions and a steamy hot romance. Elizabeth O’Roark, thank you for this fabulous story and emotional rollercoaster ride.

🎧📚🎧 And for the wonderful narration, Samantha Brentmoor is a superbly talented narrator and a versatile voice artist, and she does a great job covering the roles of all the characters, giving each their own distinct voice and personalty, making it easy to follow along and tell who is who. She has a complete understanding of the characters she portrays, takes each role, runs with it while making it her own, sounding believable and just as I picture the character would sound. She set the perfect tone for the story, captures all the characters’ emotions and projects them into her performance and has you feeling every single one. Brentmoor is an entertaining storyteller and a pleasure to listen to. Thank you for another great listen.

Absolutely Fantastic

Gemma and Ben are perfection together. I love the banter and wit that is classic O'Roark and the workplace enemies to lovers vibe worked so well. The chemistry between them was off the charts while backstories lend so well to the love affair. This was vastly different from the first two in the series but still so great and this is not a criticism but a compliment. Nothing worse than the same thing repeated with different character names. O'Roark will never deliver that! Standalone enemies to lovers workplace romance that shouldn't be missed.
