Summary
Peter V. Brett, Sunday Times best-selling author of the Demon Cycle, begins a brand-new epic fantasy adventure set in his beloved world, following a new generation of heroes.
Fifteen years have passed since the demons were destroyed. Heroes have become legend, and those who remain live in their shadows.
Olive, princess of Hollow, has her entire life planned out - a steady march towards succession. But the more her mother writes the script, the more Olive rails against playing the parts she is assigned.
Darin is the son of the man people say saved the world. Everyone expects greatness from Darin, but the only thing he’s ever been great at is hiding.
But now it’s time to fight the darkness.
When Olive and Darin step across the wards one night, they learn that the demons are not all gone, and those that remain hunger for revenge.
Are Darin and Olive ready to be heroes?
Critic reviews
"An intricately crafted tale of intrigue and courage where one’s station and lineage determines everything, good and bad. An exciting read. Peter Brett has outdone himself with this first book in a new series." (Number one New York Times best-selling author Terry Brooks)
"The Desert Prince is a deeply intimate, yet epic adventure. Heart-wrenching, smart and modern, this book kept me wide-eyed and wide awake for many-a-nights as I struggled step-for-step alongside Olive and Darin from the green lands to the desert pits to the darkest recesses of the demon minds. The Desert Prince has set a new standard for fantasy." (Wesley Chu, number one New York Times best-selling author of the War Arts Saga)

Good addition to the series spoiled by terrible narration.
I have followed this author since The Warded Man was issued and have even met him on a number of occasions. I was really looking forward to this new title but after just 10 minutes of listening I had experienced enough. I usually read the print version before listening to an audiobook and I wish I had kept to my usual strategy this time. The narration is just awful, but I finished it anyway. One-paced, daft use of accents, no tension in the build up to any event. Quite simply, they have let you down here Peter.

So disappointed
I was really looking forward to the next demon cycle book in the series but the narration is shockingly bad. NO SERIOUSLY it's that bad, I listened for a few hours but had to turn it off and got my money back. come on Amazon does nobody check this before going on sale. The plot of the book from what I listened to seems good but I couldn't listen for a minute longer.

Such terrible narration
The narration for this book is absolutely awful. Why these two narrators have been chosen is beyond me. I love Peter V Brett’s work but I just couldn’t listen to this at all. It’s ruining the book.
To go from Colin Mace who was brilliant and brought the characters and story alive, to this stunted monologue is truly the worst decision made.
I’ve returned the book after chapter 5. I just couldn’t stand to listen to anymore.
I’m very disappointed as The Demon Cycle are some of my favourite books.

Love this series but...
...the female narrator has clearly not done any homework, nor have the producers/director. Pronunciation is so off, it's jarring and really detracts from the story. Very disappointed. I expect better from Audible. I'm tempted to return the audiobook and purchase it on Kindle instead!

First thoughts
Up to chapter 5. Listened to it thinking it can’t be as bad as everyone says, but…
Two narrators instead of Colin Mace - You would have thought that they would have listened to to get the pronunciation the same. I had to stop and re-listen to some words.
I rejoined to Audible as I listen to most books. I did order the paperback but then realised it wasn’t released until 4th August 2022. I was desperate to hear the next part of the story. I’m not sure if I will continue Kit Griffiths narration lacks life and Wanda’s accent wanders around the UK.
The concept of changing narrators for the new series made sense but pick someone who can narrate without droning
My advice - buy the book

Great story let down by narrarion
Within a continued story world, I cannot fully understand changing narrators or, at the very least, failing to make certain that the new narrator maintains accents and pronunciations established in earlier works. While different actors will bring their own ‘voice’ to characters, continuity is important and so publishers and authors should make sure that once established, they stick with the direction set. Characters appearing in this novel who appeared in the previous books appear a shadow of their prior self as a result.
I feel strongly about this point as I really enjoyed the past books set in this world and the narration by Colin Mace. I’m sure that the new narrators are talented, but the world lacks the depth brought in previous books that was brought through the narration. It’s a disappointment, as with the right narrator I’ve no doubt this would have been a very enjoyable listen.

Good story let down by delivery
Was so excited for the new book unfortunately it took a lot of perseverance due to the narration. I could not get away with the wandering accents eg, a Scottish maji for God's sake or the mispronounciations. Olive Paper wined on and on. Sorry but Colin Mace needs to be brought back for the next book. I hopefully look forward to the next chapter

Just seems to lack a little
I really like the change in perspective but I found the story to be lacking. The last two books just give off a sense that the author didn't know how to end things.
