Summary

Rosa Larkin is down on her luck in London, so when she inherits a near-derelict corner shop in a quaint Devon village, her first thought is to sell it for cash and sort out her life. But nothing is straightforward about this legacy. While the identity of her benefactor remains a mystery, he - or she - has left one important legal proviso: that the shop cannot be sold, only passed on to somebody who really deserves it.

Rosa makes up her mind to give it a go: to put everything she has into getting the shop up and running again in the small seaside community of Cockleberry Bay. But can she do it all on her own? And if not, who will help her succeed - and who among the following will work secretly to see her fail?

There is a handsome rugby player, a sexy plumber, a charlatan reporter and a selection of meddling locals. Add in a hit-and-run incident and the disappearance of a valuable engraved necklace, and what you get is a journey of self-discovery and unpredictable events. With surprising and heartfelt results, Rosa, accompanied at all times by her sausage dog Hot, will slowly unravel the shadowy secrets of the inheritance and also bring her own long-hidden heritage into the light.

A feel good book - just roll with it

This is a great holiday read.

At first, I was surprised by the choice of narrator, but as the book progressed I came to realise what an inspired choice it was.

A few questions were left unanswered but generally, a really enjoyable fun read. I can't wait for the sequel.

Well done Nicola, and great job Penny.

Loved the characters in this book well rounded and it was an uplifting easy listen.

The voice given to Joss- i found unsettling as he sounded smarmy and so lead me to not trust or like his character. I felt he needed to sound more honest and likeable.

Quite a lovely story spoilt by the narrator.

Nice and easy story, but the narrator’s voice remained annoying to the last sentence!
Such a shame for the author and her effort to write the book.

First time buyers

I really enjoyed this book. It kept you guessing almost to the end, almost like a Miss Marple.

Feel good and fun

I enjoyed this book got hooked in first chapter, really easy listen and a bit of escapism, liked the characters but I feel the narrator gave them the wrong voices especially creepy Mary voice and posh Josh and Rosa voice just didn’t ring true, I think it would have been even better if ide read it with my own voices to the characters, it’s a shame because I’m not sure it’s how the author imagined the characters a bit to caricature for me, still enjoyed it and look forward to the sequel with a new narrator.

Good book

Enjoyed the story , funny and kept me wanting to listen only criticism is the voices of the narrator Rosa voice quite annoying and Queenie and Mary both sound like old witches otherwise a good listen
