Summary
It's been a long seventeen years since Jess last saw her grandmother or visited the family cottage set on an idyllic lake in Northern Michigan. For all that time, she's been haunted by loss - of her innocence and her ability to trust and, most of all, of a profound summer romance that might have been something more. The Color of water in July
I found the story very interesting and enjoyed the twists and turns of the narrative. However the childlike reading of the story put me off so much that I felt as though I probably wouldn’t even be able to finish it. I suppose it shows how good the story was that I saw it through to the end, which I’m glad I did. However it sounded like a child was reading it, sounding out all the words and saying all the letters as if she had never read anything before. It was supremely annoying. I shall make sure I never buy another book read by this narrator.

An unexpected delight
What a lovely book this turned out to be! At the outset, I had to force myself to continue because the narrator has that sort of US poetic voice which I tend to find unnatural and affected. As I got into the book however, I started to enjoy her reading, which was well suited to the wonderfully evocative prose.
The characters were well drawn and believable. Shades of grey, rather than the black or white which can make reading a book seem a waste of my time. The story evolves in a very subtle and fascinating way. There is a mystery at its core but not a standard one.
Thoroughly enjoyable all round!

Family Secrets
This book was a surprise , I didn't think I was going to get into it ......... 7 hours later 👀 you may need a day off or a Sunday ,I just had to find out the truth! I could really have slapped the grandmother but I guess it just how it was back in the day, some ways are better now .
