Story
Nora Kelly, a young curator at the Santa Fe Institute of Archaeology, is approached by historian Clive Benton with a once-in-a-lifetime proposal: to lead a team in search of the so-called "Lost Camp" of the tragic Donner Party. This was a group of pioneers who earned a terrible place in American history when they became snow-bound in the California mountains in 1847, their fate unknown until the first skeletonized survivors stumbled out of the wilderness, raving about starvation, murder - and cannibalism.

A fabulous heist: on the evening of November 24, 1971, D. B. Cooper hijacked Flight 305 - Portland to Seattle - with a fake bomb, collected a ransom of $200,000, and then parachuted from the rear of the plane, disappearing into the night...and into history. A brutal crime steeped in legend and malevolence: 50 years later, Agent Pendergast takes on a bizarre and gruesome case: in the ghost-haunted city of Savannah, Georgia, bodies are found with no blood left in their veins - sowing panic and reviving whispered tales of the infamous Savannah Vampire.

Summary
At first, robbery is suspected, but the truth proves stranger: as a final challenge to his three sons, Broadbent has buried himself and his treasure somewhere in the world, hidden away like an ancient Egyptian pharaoh. If the sons wish to claim their fabulous inheritance, they must find their father's carefully concealed tomb.
The race is on, but the three brothers are not the only ones competing for the treasure. With half a billion dollars at stake, as well as an ancient Mayan codex that may hold a cure for cancer and other deadly diseases, others soon join the hunt; and some of them will stop at nothing to claim the grave goods.
The best-selling coauthor of such page-turning thrillers as Relic and The Cabinet of Curiosities, Douglas Preston now spins an unforgettable tale of greed, adventure, and betrayal.

Decent enough!
(a decent book deserves 3 stars, which is what this received)
A nice adventure story. The pace is good and the narrator does very well at bringing the different characters to life. Nothing ground-breaking, but enjoyable enough and well worth a second listen at some point in the future!

I thouroughly enjoyed it !!
I'm not sure why the previous two reviews were so critical. I read the book first and loved it. I then bought the Audiobook and enjoyed it as well. I must admit that the unabriddged version will be better, but which on isn't? Anyway, I have a fondness for books written by Douglas Preston as well as those by Lincoln Child (Utopia). The ones written by both of them are simply awesome. My favorites, Relic and Thunderhead, are not available at Audible for some reason. Give this one a try. If you like the stuff of the Indiana Jones movies, you should enjoy this audiobook. It's not the best book ever, but it is a really good way to spend 5+ hours.

Good Read
We listened to this book on a long car trip. It was the first book my wife has listened to. I must admit that I found myself completely immersed in the book and not so much the trip.
My wife thought it was just ok. The majority of the story is well designed and has a consistent feel. There are story elements that are too convenient and kind of silly. But, I can forgve that. Preston (and Child) remain my favorite authors and if you like them, you should read this book.

Excellent descriptive narrative, so-so thriller
I'd rate it 3.5. The novel is well-written and filled with details that evoke the Honduras location. It makes for a vivid read, but I'm sure it could bog down for some readers. As for the mystery, I did not find too many surprises; but, the story remained relatively compelling. I was drawn mostly into the character of Tom, more than the other 2 brothers. The villain was almost too villainous, a little over the top. The best character is Borabay ... I'll let your imagination take it from here.

Good fun
This Indian Jones type story was fun, I stumbled across the main character Tom Broadbent in a subsequent novel (Tyrannasaur Canyon). I found his backstory as told in this book compelling. The brothers are an interesting dynamic. I found the story interesting, if at times predictable. A fun read all around.

Cartoonish, but a good listen
This book is Indiana Jones meets Days of our Lives. It's full of drama and characters that are easy to like and dislike. The beginning takes a short bit to get going (because the writer introduces many characters), but once it does, it's smooth sailing. The story had three plot twists that surprised me. I liked that. The narrator does a good job of making the characters sound distinct, which helped me keep track of who was saying what. The archeology is mostly fantasy, so don't expect to believe everything said about the Maya. Do expect, however, to be entertained.

Good story
What made the experience of listening to The Codex the most enjoyable?
Good narration, kept me listening
What did you like best about this story?
It filled in some later story character gaps I had
Which character – as performed by Scott Sowers – was your favorite?
The main character, well all of them really
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Nope, I keep falling asleep. Not the books fault, I often use audio books to get to sleep as I have quite severe tinnitus ( ringing in the ears ) and have had for years.

Read my review before you buy!
The premise of this story was good, but it just wasn't written very well. PLUS, the narrator protrayed the characters with NO enthusiasm, kind of like the way a high school student would simply read the parts and call himself an "actor". Dialogue between the characters was unnatural and forced.
Additionally, with a title like "The Codex" you'd think the book would be centered around that or would at least play an important role that would drive the plot. Not so. It was only one of many objects being sought after. It could have easily been called "The Painting", "The Mayan Temple", or "The Collection of Art Worth a Half Billion Dollars". But let's face it: it wouldn't have sold because "The Codex" sounds so much cooler.
There are better reads available.
