Summary

Twelve clues.

Twelve keys.

Twelve days of Christmas.

But who will survive until Twelfth Night?

Lily Armitage never intended to return to Endgame House - the grand family home where her mother died twenty-one Christmases ago. Until she receives a letter from her aunt, asking her to return to take part in an annual tradition: the Christmas Game. The challenge? Solve twelve clues, to find twelve keys. The prize? The deeds to the manor house.

Lily has no desire to win the house. But her aunt makes one more promise: The clues will also reveal who really killed Lily's mother all those years ago.

So, for the twelve days of Christmas, Lily must stay at Endgame House with her estranged cousins and unravel the riddles that hold the key not just to the family home, but to its darkest secrets. However, it soon becomes clear that her cousins all have their own reasons for wanting to win the house - and not all of them are playing fair.

As a snowstorm cuts them off from the village, the game turns deadly. Soon Lily realises that she is no longer fighting for an inheritance, but for her life.

This Christmas is to die for . . . Let the game begin

The perfect gift for fans of Agatha Christie and classic crime this Christmas.

Cross this off your Christmas list

Who doesn't like a murder mystery at Christmas time? And one set in an isolated country manor? All the better! But the setting and the season only make this dreadful book an even bigger failure. The writing is dire: I can forgive a ludicrous plot if the story is compelling, but Benedict also serves up cardboard characters, leaden similes, distracting aliteration and clunking twists. I stuck it out to the end – spoiler: it doesn't improve. The audiobook is rounded off by flat narration that would be better suited to a regional news summary. Indulge in this only if you hate Christmas as much as the author seems to. By far, the worst book I've read or listened to this year.

Listen Immediately!!!

Totally loved it. SPOILER ALERT!!! It is obvious from quite early on who one murder is. But all the loose ends throughout the story, that tie up the entire package, lead you on some very intriguing and twisty pathways. Story is really well told, with a very clever modern twist on many a told country house mystery. Loved it!

Death by similes and ridiculous plot

The most awful story ever - only finished as was for my bookclub. Hours of my life I'm never going to get back. The terrible Christmas similes 'falling like Santa down the chimney' 'shiny like tinsel' etc made me want to stick pine needles in my eyes (see what I did there). The plot was so stupid, the main protagonist was just a wet blanket whose main personality trait seemed to be wearing self-made corsets (why?) For someone who was meant to be really clever she was so stupid. The murderer was obvious from the get go and pretty much everyone was either a lesbian, suspected to be a lesbian (despite there being no reason to think they were apart from an open bedroom door) or an historic closet lesbian. Why no one thought to just walk to the nearest house when the murders start (the village is 10 miles away in the snow - it's Yorkshire not Siberia! There would be one at the end of the road!) All over just ridiculous.

terrific

The narration was superb, and I was really gripped. a fantastic festive murder mystery. 4.5 stars - dropped half a star just because a couple of things were a little predictable, but overall it was really good. Lots of characters to get to know, with a location that couldn't help feeling a bit creepy!

A promising mystery ruined

The mystery was engaging but I was unable to finish the novel. The overuse of metaphor was so grating I couldn't get through the twelve days of Christmas and gave up before Christmas lunch.

terrible simillies

if you can get past the terrible trite writing at the start it does improve.

Don’t waste a credit

Dreadfully dull main character and overly cliched from the start. I really wish i had read the reviews before I wasted a credit!

Awful

Clunky, boring and long winded, a ridiculous story with no real justification for everything that happened, I could go on but I can’t be bothered, I’m just glad it’s over. Don’t waste money or a credit on this

wish I'd read the other reviews

Unbelievable nonsense, this story is so far fetched, the only good thing I can say is that the last chapter made me laugh ...
