Summary

Bloomsbury presents The Bone Season by Samantha Shannon, read by Alana Kerr Collins.

A dreamer who can start a revolution.

For the past 200 years, the Scion government has led an oppressive campaign against unnaturalness in London.

Clairvoyance in all its forms has been decreed a criminal offence, and those who practise it viciously punished. Forced underground, a clairvoyant underworld has developed, combating persecution and evading capture.

Paige Mahoney, a powerful dreamwalker operating in the Seven Dials district of London, leads a double life, using her unnaturalness illegally while hiding her gift from her father, who works for the Scion regime....

Outstanding

So many great things about this audiobook: the story is gripping, the narration suits the story so well, but it’s the characterisation of Paige / Page (not sure how you’d spell it) that I love most of all. I have hardly ever read or listened to a book with a female lead character like this, most books (sadly even ones written by women) seem to cater for the male gaze in characterising women, but the author doesn’t do that here. Paige isn’t objectified, we know roughly what she looks like, but that’s it, the focus is on her qualities and her skills, her personality and humanity. It’s so refreshing to find a book like that. Paige is a whole person and so every interaction she has is believable. And she’s a heroine, plucky and brave. Can’t wait to listen to the rest of the series now. This book ended with quite a cliffhanger!

Narrator ruins the story unfortunately

I am half way through and have only stuck with it because it’s a great story. But the narrator! She just reads and reads in the exact same up and down lilt in her voice which is driving me insane. Such a shame as the actual storyline is very original and I am trying desperately to get past the narrator in order to try and enjoy the story.
Please get this redone with someone who knows how to read an audio book

Thoroughly Entertaining

I have always loved the narrator of the books. She has the perfect voice for Paige.

Both times I've read the book though most of it goes In one ear & out the other. Not sure if that's me or the book.

You'll need a dictionary for this one!

I love a sify fantasy with new concepts but this was just too much! So many words that mean nothing to the reader, the society the races the types of clarvoance, it was like listening to a book in a foreign language and none of the words or concepts really got explained. Made it to chapter 4 and I had to return the book. Shame because I LOVED the priory of the orange tree
