About this listen
No time to read? Get the main key insights from this summary of Jordan B. Peterson’s Beyond Order in just a short listen.
A few key insights from Chapter 1:
1. Rule 1: Do not carelessly denigrate social institutions or creative achievement.
2. People on the left side of the political spectrum often tend to oppose social institutions, because of their constraining and structured nature, while those on the right side tend to dismiss creativity and avant-gardism because it threatens conservatism. The truth is that both are important.
3. All of us have been part of a social institution at one point or another. We are susceptible to developing strong beliefs about how bad the institution is and how it should change, or on the opposite side, developing attachment to those institutions and categorically refusing change and progress.
4. As society develops and new technologies and innovations are integrated, there needs to be a balance between how many new rules and norms we introduce and how much of the old way of doing things we keep. Too much of either is bound to lead to chaos, confusion, and disorder.
