Summary
Discover the darkness that lurks around every corner in the latest instalment of the award-winning Grace series, now a major ITV series.
A ruthless crime. A race against time.
In the dead of night, a farmer hears a suspicious noise. It’s everyone’s worst nightmare: a break-in. When he confronts the intruders, he has no idea that just minutes later he will be left lying in a pool of blood. But the chilling truth lies not in the act itself, but what the perpetrators were willing to kill for.
At the scene of the crime, Detective Superintendent Roy Grace senses something amiss. This is no mere botched robbery; it’s the tip of the iceberg of a nationwide crime epidemic. Ruthless gangs, operating with military precision, have discovered a new black market flourishing in the shadows – an unthinkable source of wealth even more profitable than drugs.
Grace’s investigation into this deadly trade pits him against some of the most ruthless people he has ever encountered; people who will kill anyone who gets in their way, because where there is greed, there is murder.
The clock is ticking, and the stakes have never been higher. Out of his element, and out of time, can Roy Grace put a stop to these criminal masterminds before more innocent lives are lost?

Excellent
I’ve ‘read’ this book in two nights, I’m exhausted now but wow, best yet Mr J and Daniel Weyman of course who is perfect for this series 😃

Pure class once again
Peter James is the benchmark right now for crime fiction, Masterfully weaves together various strands of story into one cohesive and enthralling story. This is a series of books not to miss.

Coincidences and glacially slow police investigation plus infuriating dialogue
Mostly good. Occasionally excellent. Too frequently infuriating.
Not Mr James’s best work, by any stretch.
A decent listen, but don’t expect any Holmes-esque deduction on the part of Roy Grace. Nor any twists in the tale. The known villains who everyone kept saying probably did it from quite early on, did it.
One of the civilian characters and their private investigator achieved more in a couple of days than Sussex Major Crimes did in what seemed like weeks.
Some parts, especially some of the wooden dialogue between the sidebar subplot characters, were as if they’d been written by a different author entirely.
Having consumed all of P James’s work to date, I am invested in the Grace universe enough to still be entertained by this episode. But that’s despite the shortcomings of this book; not because of its virtues

Never disappoints
A great subject to cover, especially now, more than ever.
Let’s hope anyone reading this book and thinking about buying a puppy from these horrendous puppy farms, makes them think again after listening to this book.

Riveting story.
Such a topical story and once again masterfully narrated. An awful lot of accurate information which I hope listeners will take notice of.

Steady decline in creativity…very disappointing
The last two books have been very difficult to keep my attention and willingness to continue listening. I feel that Peter James is running out of ideas. I stuck with this in the hope to find out what happened to Cassian Pewe…but again nothing. Overall very disappointing 😩

Great Grace book
I always enjoy the Grace books but as a dog lover found this especially good. Some challenging and/or sad bits but hopefully it will go some way to persuading the ‘powers that be’ of the need for much more severe penalties and stringent policing for crimes that are often more traumatic than many carrying much greater penalties and policing enthusiasm. The case of the little girl with rabies shows what, in the extreme, these crimes can lead to.
I would like to have learned the outcome of the little girl’s treatment.

One of my favourite books in this brilliant series
Set during the Covid pandemic when the price of puppies went through the roof, this book deals with the horrible crimes of puppy farming and dognapping, as as a dog lover with 3 lovely dogs of my own I found it a difficult read at times.
As always with this author, the book is well written and expertly plotted. The police investigation is realistically portrayed. I love Roy Grace and his team, who all seem like old friends now., and I can't help having a bit of a soft spot for Norman Potting who has grown on me throughout the series. At one point the case comes a little too close to home for Roy and his family, who are dog lovers, and I loved the way that Cleo dealt with the matter 😁
As I said earlier, it was a tough read and at times I was heartbroken, but also incredibly angry. Only a very good book can bring out such strong emotions. Well done Peter James for highlighting these callous and devastating crimes. This is definitely one of my favourites in the series.
