About this listen

“When all else fails, the ass end of a carp makes a damn fine weapon.”

Your new favorite monster hunter has arrived! Bubba the Monster Hunter has some competition in this horror-comedy collection from best-selling author duo Gail Z. and Larry N. Martin!

By day, Mark Wojcik can be found elbow-deep in engine grease, making cars and trucks safe for the highway. By night, he can be found traipsing through the wilds of Pennsylvania, making the world safe for humans. He's more than just a mechanic, he's a New Templar Knight. He travels the backroads and byways fighting weresquonks, ningen, selkies, ghosts, and . . . gnomes? Is that gnome . . . naked? (Sigh.)

Season One collects the first four novellas in the Spells, Salt, & Steel series: Spells, Salt, & Steel; Open Season; Deep Trouble; and Close Encounters.

Ok

Not sure about this book, not what I was expecting but it kept my attention and I finished it. Not sure if I will read the next book though

Would have liked a bit more “character”….

First of all, I must say that I did actually enjoy this collection of the four novellas. It’s very much “monster of the week” in format, and feels quite formulaic in that way, but the stories clip along at a good pace, and are not short on imagination and are a fun ride. Having said that, I would have appreciated a bit more fleshing out of the main character, as although there was some nice backstory referred to throughout the stories, I really just wanted to know more about him and would like to have seen some character development as he went along.

I quite liked the narrator, and I think he was definitely able to make the most out of some of the thin of the characters, so well done to him!

Having said all that, I did enjoy listening to these – I listened to them during my car commute to and from work, and they kept me engaged on the journey, so can’t complain :-)

Good relaxation

... even a bit too much.
I can't quite agree with myself about the reader: he does do voices, which I like. But he keeps going with the same cadence.

I guess what's less good is the story. The frame and characters are very thin. Just that: framework for the action. And even the action bits get monotonous. Different creatures, ok. But that's about it. The title of the book says it all.

Bubba has no competition here.

Spells, salt and steel

Imagination, fantasy creatures and a hero, an easy enjoyable listen. Good narration, look forward to book two.

Good listen!!

Plaudits to author and narrator both. Definitely does not deserve 3 stars at all! Will add author to my list. I love the humour and the no nonsense, straight to it story telling. Finger 🫰 snaps.
