Summary

Charlie was living the life of luxury as an alien wizard’s gladiator slave. It was not ideal.

He had survived a spaceship crash, alien slave traders, space pirates, and fierce gladiatorial combat. Hell, he’d even faced an actual fire-breathing dragon and lived, but now, he was presented with an even greater challenge. Domestic living, captive on a strange world.

Charlie almost had to laugh at his changing circumstances, having seen it all since a wormhole spat him out in a distant galaxy. He learned to fight, he learned to use magic, he even learned to kill - to survive at all costs. And that hard work had somehow landed him a cushy life on a powerful wizard’s estate. But all was not what it seemed.

Something was wrong, and he still wasn’t a free man. Captivity, even in a gilded cage such as this, was abhorrent to the spaceman from Earth. And while the new existence he had fallen into seemed one of luxury, he couldn’t help but wonder when it would all go to hell.

He should have known, with his luck, the answer was soon.

Enjoyable series

This is the type of SF books I used to read in the 80s, Not overly taxing but enjoyable and light.

I would say they a would be better aimed at the young adult market.

I liked the narrator and the books get better through the series.

One negative is that the scenes can jump around a little, and feel that they have been edited down from larger text, e.g. some fights start and instantly end as if a dozen paragraphs have been cut out to shorten the book.

I wanted to hate it... But it's awesome.

The first book was brilliant. Kind of hoped this second book was going to be worse so I didn't need to buy book 3. Yep, failed miserably!

This book builds on from the first book and kills it! The characters have come to life and continue to build on their back-story without detracting from the main storyline. There's plenty of laugh out loud moments in the book and it keeps moving at a pace which makes it hard to put down.

As I write this I'm already a few chapters into book 3, this series is going to end up costing me a small fortune in additional credits. If you have the first book, get this one. you won't regret it. If you're reading this and don't have book one, get both!

Entertaining sequel

I received a free audiobook from the Author, in exchange for an unbiased review. I may have mis-spelled some character names...

Space Pirate Charlie picks up directly where Bad Luck Charlie left off, with Charlie a slave of the Visla Makton, a powerful mage. Although Charlie seems to have fallen on his feet, and is treated as special because of his previous exploits with the Zamaki (dragon) it soon becomes apparent that all is not well, and Charlie must team up with friends old and new to defeat the Visla.

What follows is an adventure through several colourful alien worlds as Charlie tries to escape the Visla and find some of his human tech to help in the battle.

If you're here looking for highbrow literature you're in the wrong place (I'm sure the author won't mind me saying). If you're here for a lighthearted, fun and dramatic adventure featuring magic and tech then buckle up and hold on tight to the dragon, it's quite the ride.

Also I won't spoil it for anyone but that's a heck of a set-up for book 3 at the end!

Boring, flat and tedious...

I read book one and wasn't enthralled, but figured the author might get his legs and improve his writing, story and character development. Instead, something went horribly wrong.

1. Charlie has an unnamed power. Every character that comes near him instantly begins talking like him, has the exact same goals, is in awe of his amazing ability to reinvent hundred thousand year old magic and before long is just a duplicate Charlie. By the end of book 2 every single character sounds the EXACT same. Their mannerisms, their speech and they just lose any semblance of personality. Super old Vampire Space Assassin? Nope. Thats Charlie the Space Assasssin. Yes. Somehow even the Dragon becomes an exact duplicate of Charlie. Don't get me started on the weak women who just cry about dogs. People are dying left and right and she is concerned SOLELY with a puppy she just got.

2. Charlie adapted to magic so fast that he actually began REINVENTING it. Yes, thats right. He has been learning magic for like 3 years at this point and he invents a new form of magic that the ancient Vampire Mage has never heard of. *Facepalm*

3. Charlie invents the wheel. Thousands of worlds with gravity. Civilizations that had to evolve without the use of magic and NONE of them invented the wheel in this galaxy. Its maddening.

4. Guess how much pirating Charlie does in a book called "Space Pirate Charlie"?? Wanna guess? Its ZERO. None. Oh, and when the actual pirates show up -- you guessed it!! They've cast off their pirating ways to save the universe. No longer do they have a brutal mindset of save their own skin. Nope!! Now they are freedom fighters! Ya know... cause of Charlie's crazy reality altering power.

5.The writing itself is so bland... fight scenes are described in 6th grade grammar and in short, choppy sentences.

6, The narrator sounds like he is half asleep. No kidding. I laughed out loud when he mimicked shouting and it was almost a whisper.... wow.

I'm sure lots of people will find it enjoyable. Those people need to branch out and find the nearly limitless books that exist that do a much better job.

In a word.. frustrating..

The overall story is pretty good. My problems come from the author. He must think we readers are idiots. Because he explains things over and over and over. But the biggest annoyance is that the MC is Supposed to be the genius in engineering and several over things yet is he continuously makes idiots choices none stop. Oh and of course he is does want to actually kill the main bad guys or allow them to die from his allies, so they continue to kill millions.
I’m almost positive that most of us ever saw him after knowing his choices , would kick him in the nuts.
That my review 😛

Awesome

Moved along really well and didn't waste a ton of time with exposition or belittling the listener with jargon. Was a fun story and all the heroes got to showcase their development a bit more.

An excellent sequel

**received promotional copy from author

This book continues where Bad Luck Charlie leaves off. A lot has happened and the author does a great job easing you back into the world without rehashing everything. It’s definitely a good idea to refresh your memory of book 1 before jumping back in, but it feels great when you read this directly after 1.

The book doesn’t feel as action-packed as the first did, but that’s ok. It’s kind of like the Empire Strikes Back in that it’s more about the development of Charlie than a huge action epic. This really works. There are predictable moments but they are few and far between. I saw the ending “twist” coming the moment the author set it up, but that didn’t stop me from getting excited about book 3!

If you read my review of book one, my main complaints were language and the const use of “tech.” I’m pleased to say that it was much better. “Tech” sounded better because most characters began calling it “tech magic.” It just felt less forced. The language wasn’t as prolific either.

Another fun listen! Don’t pass it up if you listened to the first!

Great continuation to a great story

The title of this one feels like it would have been more appropriate as the header for the second arc of the first book as honestly there is very little pirate related stuff in it and it's really just a mention of his past and some re-connections. I get it though this would have been hard to title. While this book still has plenty of action the majority of it isn't nearly as fast paced or seat of your pants as the first one but it still largely feels like a combination of Farscape and Forest Gump. We get a little bit of slice of life and mystery in this one followed by some seat of the pants and finally a resolution. I personally feel the first book as better but for the average reader this one may have been easier to keep up with. The narration is once again fantastic as well and the overall story advances in an interesting way. Definitely a good continuation.

Charlie gets introduced to what real power is

I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

TLDR; As good as the first, and still highly recommended.

Another easy recommendation if you enjoy Sci-Fi, it's a sequel so you'll need to read/listen to the first one, and you won't be disappointed if you do. Charlie gets entangled with some of the real magic users of this Universe and gets involved in a conspiracy that could disrupt the balance of powers and stability of the universe. On top of that, he makes friends with a Dragon, meets up with some of his old friends, and invents coffee... Yes, invents coffee, and the author made that enjoyable.
