Lindisfarne, AD 793. There had been portents - famine, whirlwinds, lightning from clear skies, serpents seen flying through the air. But when the raiders came, no one was prepared. They came from the North, their dragon-prowed longships gliding out of the dawn mist as they descended on the kingdom's most sacred site. It is 8th June AD 793, and with the pillage of the monastery on Lindisfarne, the Viking Age has begun. While his fellow monks flee before the Norse onslaught, one young novice stands his ground.

The Plantagenet queens of England played a role in some of the most dramatic events in our history. Crusading queens, queens in rebellion against their king, queen seductresses, learned queens, queens in battle, queens who enlivened England with the romantic culture of southern Europe - these determined women often broke through medieval constraints to exercise power and influence, for good and sometimes for ill.

Couldn't put it down
Where does Shadows and Strongholds rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
It's certainly one of the best I've heard this year.
What did you like best about this story?
It was exciting and compulsive listening
What does Christopher Scott bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?
He's just a great actor. You can't experience that through reading the ordinary book.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
If I'd had the time.
Any additional comments?
I love the story of Fulk Fitzwarren, and Elizabeth Chadwick more than does it justice. The characters were brilliantly drawn, and the story gripped me from the opening sentence. Can't wait to read the sequel.
