Story
Dr Gabor Maté is one of the world’s most revered thinkers on the psychology of addiction. His radical findings - based on decades of work with patients challenged by catastrophic drug addiction and mental illness - are reframing how we view all human development. In this award-winning modern classic, Gabor Maté takes a holistic and compassionate approach to addiction, whether to alcohol, drugs, sex, money or anything self-destructive. He presents it not as a discrete phenomenon confined to a weak-willed few but as a continuum that runs through (and even underpins) our society.

Too anecdotal
The author’s claim that ADD may be caused by a disturbance of attachment in infancy and early emotional trauma is interesting insofar as it presents an alternative to the often one-sidedly neuropsychiatric view found in many other books on this topic. However, he is unable to adduce any substantial support for his claims. Instead, he resorts to vast generalizations on the basis of anecdotal evidence and personal experiences. Nonetheless, it does seem to me that his book contains a number of insights.

The knowledge you gain from this book is invaluable.
Such a relief to know that the cause of ADD can be addressed. I only wish the methods needed to facilitate the brain rewiring itself were more clear and concise and less woven into the overall narrative. If you decide to listen to this book, have a pen and paper handy to make notes when the processes are mentioned. Ultimately, you will need a family based therapist to help you rewire if you or your child has ADD, and he explains why.

I can't recommend this book highly enough, as with all Dr. Mate's books he has mixed science with extremely readable material.

Brought the audiobook so I could listen whilst I walked. Could relate to the author as he has ADD as well and had his own personal anecdotes and perspectives Virtually all of the symptoms I could relate to.Some to a lesser degree as over decades I've used different techniques to lessen its impact on me.

Mind blowing insight! Not just for ADD, but for everyone !!
Scattered Minds is a must for every parent and should be a ‘legal requirement’ at every Antenatal class. Ha!! This is what parents, families and adults working with children, must know. ASAP!
Dr. Mate, provides sound research, advisories and practical examples of cause/effects solutions. In addition it questions, clarifies and debunks everything you thought you knew-about YOU! So you begin to overstand the relationship between YOU—> You Parent.
The learning process delves not only to your own subconscious needs in relation to your own life, but the transference of these needs or deficiencies into parenting, work and relationships.
The level of learning & information from this book is infinite. As a sensory sensitive, I found the narrator easy to listen to and so the learning from this masterpiece is easy.
Simply Amazing!!

I found this book a ray of light, in beginning to understand what is going on for my son.
Years of going round a pathetic NHS and School system designed only for ‘normal’ people has begun to take its toll. This book has opened my eyes and given me more insight in the few hours I’ve listened, than that of being passed from pillar to post by out of date and under funded institutions.

Very well written, insightful but not much practical advice
I enjoyed listening to this book. It provides a very insightful view of ADHD and a balanced view on medication. In terms of other practical advice on what to do to deal with ADHD, the book provides a lot of advice on what not to do, things that are harmful to people with ADHD but it does not provide practical solutions that could be used instead that would help alleviate the barriers caused by ADHD.

Excellent book
Excellent, well-written book that covers a lot of ground, including a role of attachment and presents ADD a lot as an attachment disorder, which I find helpful, but others may argue for distinguishing them, which, in fact is often hard to do and this book does a good job at integrating rather then distinguishing the two disorders. On the whole this is a well-balanced book when it comes to bio-psycho-social-spiritual formulation. I truly enjoyed Daniel Mate’s voice and narration, one of the best l have heard on Audible books. Unfortunately, some of the Audible books are narrated by jarring, unpleasant voices that my ADD brain absolutely cannot stand even when I'm genuinely interested in the book itself. Daniel’s voice did a true service to this beautifully written book.

Life changing!!!!
Didn't know that my mother's rageuos beatings caused me this much damage. But why would i suspect that?, such beatings are the gold standard of parenting in Africa. Its sad i discovered this now, imagine if i dicovered this in my earlier years, instead of in my final year of university, at the same time i feel lucky to have discovered this at 21. I have seen first hand how bad adhd can be if it goes untreated. My father was a great lawyer at his peak, he is an absolute mess right now because of this. Lost job, marriage, back with his mother, multiple kids, crippling debts, lost car to pawnshop after years of paying for it. I will try to recommend this book for him and i hope my future wont be the same. Time to start the process of healing.

Age 24, I discover my ADHD thanks to this book.
This is a wonderful read, and a turning point in my life.
Learning this has been a great relief, and is making me hopeful about the future. The narration too helped to bring life to the experiences of sufferers related in the book.
Accepting your flaws is difficult when you don't even understand what exactly you're supposed to accept. Now I do, and I also know how to ask others to accept me, I know in what ways I am different from them, and in what ways my behavior will appear unpredictable and irrational.
