Summary

Magic is risen.

When magic returned to the world, it could have saved humanity, but greed and thirst for power caused mankind's downfall instead. Now once-human monsters called Howls prowl abandoned streets, their hunger guided by corrupt necromancers and the all-powerful Kin. Only Hunters have the power to fight back in the unending war, using the same magic that ended civilization in the first place.

But they are losing.

Tenn is a Hunter, resigned to fight even though hope is nearly lost. When he is singled out by a seductive Kin named Tom‡s and the enigmatic Hunter Jarrett, Tenn realizes he's become a pawn in a bigger game. One that could turn the tides of war. But if his mutinous magic and wayward heart get in the way, his power might not be used in favor of mankind.

If Tenn fails to play his part, it could cost him his friends, his life...and the entire world.

Not bad

A good listen, though I did find it a bit predictable and the romance unbelievable and a little bland.

Magical fast-paced fun.

Much needed LGBTQ representation as a protagonist in a fantasy novel. Great read. Looking forward to the next in the series!

Terrible Narrator

The narrator for this audiobook speaks in a consistently monotonous voice with absolutely no distinction between characters. There is no emotion in the dead and dull voice - by itself that wouldn't be a deal-breaker, but the timing of the narration doesn't keep an even pace which makes attempting to adjust the narration to a comfortable and understandable speed impossible.

The narrator does a real injustice to the book. I have nearly finished the eBook but the audiobook never fails to send me to sleep before the end of chapter one.

Too much sexual tension

the story is amazing its dark gritty and very fun look at magic in end of the world, the writing is very good and easy to get lost in. That all said the sexual tension is insane. it feels like a horny kid just wanting to screw every dude in sight. Im totally down for romance in any novel gay or straight but this is just too much. so far the main character Tenn has goggled over every single male character introduced and its completely making this amazing book unfinishable for me.

dark

great story and AWESOME narration, kinda dark, you really have to not expect butterflies and rainbows, even when good things happen they don't happen...….looking forward to the next one, hoping its not quite as hopeless as this one=P lol

phenomenal

first of all, perfect narrator for this story.

the story is wonderful! it's very grim, fitting the post apocalyptic setting. the magic was very interesting, and I can tell the author did research into magickal practices with wicca and rune works. they are pretty accurate, for a fantasy story of course.

the romance, it's not lovey dovey and mushy, and far from over sexualized, especially for an LGBT m/m story, which tend to feature less than appropriate for those under age. it's a very good balance of descriptive and vague when it comes to Tomás, and so heartwarming and beautiful with Jared.

I especially love the use of the spheres and Tenn's water showing him visions of his past as a way to info dump backstory, it felt very in line with the story elements and not jarring at all.

the LGBT element as a whole, very well done, I have hope for it's future! it wasn't a constant "gay this" "gay that" "what if he knows I'm gay" "are you gay, are you gay, maybe you are gay but just don't know it yet" that seems a constant with any story anywhere and it's so refreshing seeing a gay character just be gay. it's not a big detail of his character, he just likes boys and that's it. only one mention of how people still hate LGBT but it was probably not even a paragraph in the written book, if not a small one.

Enchanting and dark

Wow!!! This is my new favorite book. The writing is fantastic, and Zach Villa's voice is hypnotizing. This book has the perfect mix of darkness, action, and romance. There is nothing to critique. I'm going straight to the next one!
