Summary
Long before the coming of the Imperium, the realm of Ultramar was ruled by Roboute Guilliman, the last Battle King of Macragge. Even after learning of his true heritage as a primarch son of the Emperor of Mankind, he strove to expand his domain as efficiently and benevolently as possible, with the XIII Legion Ultramarines as his alone to command.
Now, facing a rival empire on the ork-held world of Thoas, Guilliman must choose his weapons carefully - otherwise his dream of a brighter future could be lost forever.

5 hours of relentless battle description
Having read a few 40K novels ( The Night Lords omnibus and The Iron Snakes omnibus), I was impressed by the writing. The Primarchs are very interesting characters and so I wanted to find out more about each one.
The quality of the voice actor and the audio itself is excellent, well paced and expertly delivered. However, this really is not a science fiction book. It is essentially a military encounter. The story focuses on an Ultramrines battle with Orks on the planet Thoas. I found this incredibly tedious and there is very little exploration of Guilliman himself. We learn very little about him. I won't be exploring any more Primarch books after this and will start on The Sisters of Battle or some of the Horus Heresy. If you like descriptions of battles, you'll love it but not my taste.

Yawn
This book doesn't add anything to Guilliman's background, it simply concentrates on a single boring engagement with an Ork held world. Incredibly dull and doesn't add anything to the HH lore.

Disappointing
Unlike the others in this series there was nothing about the characters life prior to the emperor finding him. It was essentially just one protracted battle and the subplots with decent in the ranks didn’t play out or bring much to the overall story. Main plot doesn’t play well with the overarching theme of the primarch either. He comes off far too rigid and inflexible as opposed to the measured and thinking warrior he is seen as in the other examples of him in the main line novels.
Narration was good and the story is well written just fails to engage beyond a fairly pedestrian battle story

interesting listening
Good story and string narrative throughout, I would recommend and listen again, although a long and independent listening is required.

Cool, nicely read but short.
Toby Longworth should read allblack library's collection. awesome voicing for characters in the story. talking of which, I would have loved that to be alot longer. But what there was, entertained me immensely.

What was this story even about?
It wasn’t about the Primarch, it wasn’t about the Legion, it had some cool RG lines but they were in between everything else. Dissapointing start to the series!

Very vanilla
A weak start for the series....glad I didn't read them in order as I wouldn't have continued. It's not that the story is bad.....it's just not exciting or really does much to fill out old Robute's back story.

I’ll never get those 5 hours back…
I read Damnation Of Pythos a couple of years ago and promised myself that I would never read another of David Annandale’s books. However, as the other Primarch books are generally interesting, I took the plunge, and I regret it. The whole book revolves around a very long and drawn out battle, and provides very little extra detail about Guilliman. Much like Damnation of Pythos, it is dull, full of clumsy and repetitive metaphors, and adds very little to the story of the Great Crusade or the Horus Heresy. Avoid this book unless you enjoy plot lines so transparent that you can see the voice actor dying inside.

Not what I expected.
The book focuses on 1 large battle for the planet of Thoas. There is very little actually about RG and what made him into the man he is.

It's fine
It's just a story about Ultramarines killing Orks. It doesn't really give any insight into Guilliman, he honestly didn't even have to be in this story.
Otherwise, if you can get passed the characters saying "Theoretical" and "Practical" 72 times, it's ok.

Not really what I expected from a primarch book.
This book doesn't cover his childhood of really talk of the emperor, it's a slow drag of battle after battle with foreboding forshowdowning of the future. It well written just not what I was looking for.

Good but ...
I love the ultramarines... chaos players hate them. Even some loyalists don’t like them. Black Library does a magnificent job as is expected. But I must admit with all due respect, my Lord Guilliman is just one big computer.
If you need to learn theoretical vs practical ... this is the book.

tedious
A tedious story about nothing, that goes nowhere. Offers nothing new about Guilliman. I listened to this after the Alpharius book and boy does this suck in comparisson

The theoretical and the practical
If I ever hear the words 'theoretical' and 'practical' used in the same sentence again my brain will explode

Good
A interesting look at the beginnings of the Codex Astartes and Roboute Guilliam. I wish it covered more than one battle.

Good book
It is a short audio book but the fighting starts early and stops at the very end of the book. Enjoyed this one a lot.

An excellent insight into Guilliman
This is what I had hoped all of the books in the Primarch series would be like. One walk away with a much better understanding of how Guilliman thinks & feels about himself, his Legion, the Emperor & the Great Crusade.
The story itself is good, if anti-climactic. This feels like the TV show “Lost” if the Ultramarines were there. It is engaging, mysterious, & perfect for illustrating the Primarch.
The narration is adequate. The whole book is just Ultramarines speaking, so very little variation is speech, but that is appropriate. Me. Longworth is perfectly fine, if unmemorable.
