Summary

In a blink, I found myself in an unknown land, greeted by the textbox of an unfriendly system.

It wanted me to become a great hero, save the world, win the love of the people and all that crap. But this new world already had a hero. Why should I bust my ass and deal with dragons and the unknown for people I didn't know? Let him deal with that. It's his job! So instead of being tempted by the system's nonsense, I chose a simple class. Potion maker. I wasn't interested in cultivating mana and defying the heavens, courting death, none of that crap.

Unfortunately, the town I spawned near was suffering crippling inflation, merchants and people were leaving, and they themselves lacked high-demand businesses. The town would soon be going under.

Not if I have anything to say about it.

But will it be that easy to escape fate?

Novel contains: strong MC in a slice-of-life environment, dungeon diving, boss battles, cultivation and elements, mana/magic, MC-exclusive system but it doesn't do the work for him, treasures, adventurers, slow world building, build-up, features that will not be introduced all at once (upgrades so on), actual good loot at the end of very powerful bosses, and romance (no harem). As characters develop throughout the series, issues and emotions and even the MC may find himself in a corner or two. A story of an upcoming potion shopkeeper and his apprentices.

Building an S-ranked potion shop is easier said than done....

interesting

really loved the storyline. I always enjoy the slice of life stories and this was no exception. Alvin writes pretty well.
the characters were interesting and the world building was awesome. There were certain points where it felt like info dumps but overall great work. Narration was pretty good too.

Brilliant

This is so refreshing, a main character that doesn’t want to be a hero, the writing is fun and the characters are great, not spoiled by constant status updates.
This is one of my favourites.

Good start.

I'm a fan of some of Alvin's other series and thought I would give this a try. Good pace story, world and character building I feel a decent pace, not too fast or too slow. voice performance was good, enjoyed listening. moving on to the next book.

Entertaining book with excellent narration.

I hadn’t encountered this author or narrator(s) before, the story flows well, with regular entertaining anecdotes.
The story line hints at elements to come and I look forward to seeing how the series develops. The writer was unknown to me and is one I will be following, I am looking forward to the next instalment in the series
The male narrator brings to life the humour contained within the story, the characters inflection and tone are prefect.

A fight for a slice of life

A nice twist on the summoned to be a hero story and wanting none of in it. The pacing is pretty fast and it has some genuinely funny moments thrown in too. if you want to try something different with wuxia undertones then definitely give this a go.

Interesting start

A mix between slice of life abd adventuring.
An isekai start of an MC who refuse to become the hero but a potion maker and living a peaceful life but life dosnt go how our MC wishes.

Best "I have no F#$ks to give" MC ever!

This was ridiculously funny. Finally an MC that gives absolutely no f#%ks about being the hero. He goes out of his way to reject any hero type title or role and purposely chooses the least hero like role there is. In an attempt to power him up the system make him an OP potion maker. It's here that even more hilarity ensues. He basically kicks everyone's butt then tells them (in some cases he threatens) not to speak about said butt kicking. He goes out of his way to hide the beatdown/smackdown/butt stomp he put on all these unsuspecting bullies. Talk about being taken out behind the barn!

This dude could also have his pick of women for a harem but noooo, he rebuffs all but his fiancé. He could take over the town but he refuses to lead. he could sell his potions for quadruple the prices he has set but won't. He is very cavalier in telling everyone screw off, I want a quiet peaceful life with my fiancé/wife, my apprentices, in this town, on this land. Even his spirit pet are super chill. The Cat, the Wolf and the Gryphon oh my!

If you're on the fence about listening to this book you can hop off of it right now. Matt Hicks absolutely nails the attitude and the humor of the mc. Allie Piper does a superb job with all the female voice acting. I know I'm missing a lot of other highlights to better recommend this book but I can't think of them right now. Just grab this one and enjoy!

Eh.

Its alright, refunded after 3-4 hours in.

The author portrays the MC as just wanting to live a 'normal, boring life' but the MC has the powers of basically a god in his region and gets 'lucky' on his companions.

The MC willingly ignores anything to do with understanding his mage powers and the power balance of the world as a whole. He also made an 'SSS' potion on his second try due to his mana being such high quality but that isn't explored at all. Just written off as a fact and the plot moves forward.

The book title shouldn't be 'rise of the cheat potion maker' and should aptly be renamed 'I got transmigrated and did whatever I wanted AND made money by selling potions.'

Only bought this novel for the potion making aspect - what was exposed in the brief time that I listened to it, was as barebones as you can get for 'potion making'.

I dropped after the first fight scene with another mage. Why? Because again the willful ignorance of the MC.

Now you might say "Oh the author is just choosing what is known and shown etc." but when the interactions and other resulting consequences are tailored around him 'not knowing' it becomes blatantly clear that its forced ignorance.

Oh and the MC rarely uses his skills I guess he forgets about them? Must be tough to have the memory recollection of a 90 year old Alzheimer patient. Really don't introduce skills and such if your MC wont use them leaves a bad taste in the mouth. Kind of like filler chapters.

This novel falls apart if you add a working brain to the MC. But, the MC has read novels about transmigrating so... "Knowledgeable on the subject" is his forte.

This is a wish-fulfillment novel. Something you put on right before you fall asleep. Or if you're into turning off your brain and just listening. It also meets that req. As there will probably be no nuances to pay attention to.

Narration wise, solid performance.

Correct me if I'm wrong - I also turned off my brain to listen to it,

I Love This Audiobook...But I Don't Know Why.

The MC is instantly transported to another world and is heavily persuaded to become the new hero to save all. Instantly realizing the frustratingly difficult trap for what it was, the MC decides to become a potion maker and live an enjoyably subtle life. Things are going great until people start realize that he's too good at his job and things start to become more and more complicated.

If I had to describe this story, I would call it "weirdly amazing". I don't know if it's the nonchalant characters and story pacing giving it a chill vibe with humorous moments. Or, it's the narrators who performed perfectly, taking away any cringe moments that I may have noticed if not for them and further enhancing the story (Honestly, Piper and Hicks were perfect for this story). There was just something about this audiobook that it offered a whole bunch of reason to appreciate it, but none that you can really point out.

This was basically a western protagonist pulled into a Japanese isekai trope and made that much more interesting because of it. Fun story, great characters, and an all-around good time. Just became a fan and looking forward to the next book.

The Potion maker is OP?

Fun slice of life anime style story.

Our MC is isekai'd to a new world and even when trying to worm his way out of the hero role and all that hassle is made crazy strong by the system and it is doing everything in its power to make him mantle the hero role, but our MC is having none of that. He just wants to settle down and have a quiet life.

Good dual narration. Some choppy dialog and long pauses between chapters sometimes.

My only real minus is a preference thing. Our MC is a goody two shoes and doesn't want to kill people. Even people that rape and kill women and children. I hate goody two shoes characters with a passion.

BUT the story is good, fun and I am looking forward to the next installment.

Holy hell was that good

Right up front before you read any further just know that I recommend this book to anybody thinking about giving it a shot. A little context for my review. I tend to take it easy on the first and last book of any series as not every series makes it to “The End” and the first of anything can be a shaky endeavor. I also try to make clear the distinction between the quality of the writing/performance of the author/narrator and my personal tastes should they differ. That's start with the narrators who I have never heard of before this audio book and as such have never listened to one of their performances. They absolutely nailed it. Their performances were just that good. Next is the author from whom I have purchased an audio book from in the past, apparently. It turns out that I picked up his book titled the anime trope system book 1 and then apparently it subsequently got lost in my way to sizeable audible library. I'm probably going to go and listen to it after I read book 2 for this series which is thankfully out right now for me to enjoy. I definitely cannot wait for book two to get the audio treatment, but I will definitely come back and pick it up when it does. That being said the story was phenomenal. Now I will freely admit that I know Jack all about anime. The sum total of my experience with anime is as follows: Avatar, Dragon Prince, American kitsune, The False Hero, and Castlevania. Seriously that's all I've ever seen and I'm not even sure if all of them fit into the category of anime. The reason why I bring this up is because I've had people in the past really try and get me interested in it and I don't really like it which means when I come across something in that area that I truly enjoy I will absolutely scream it from the heavens. This book falls into that category. Our hero doesn't want to be a hero. One moment he's a mental manager dealing with something unpleasant and in an eye blink he is thrown into this world that seems hell bent to drag him kicking and screaming into a role where he is supposed to save the world and universe as whole. I quite literally almost choked to death laughing when our hero turned down being a “basic b*tch warrior.” I tend to be doing other things while I'm listening to audiobooks. It can be an unfortunate and clearly unforeseen hazard at times. Our hero ends up getting engaged to the local dryad and attempting to revitalize the town he's been transported to. His interests are in creating a business centered around him being a potion maker. Despite all of his efforts he finds himself continually being interrupted by events coming to the town he's trying to make a life in and then in addition he's being harassed at times by the game like interface that really seems to be pushing him hard to become the hero the world needs him to be. Along the way he collects a wolf and a cat and a Griffin who all have dialogue sections of their own. The review is getting long and I definitely don't want to risk spoiling anything for a potential listener or future reader so I'll end it here by saying thank you to everybody who had a hand in bringing this story to us the audible listeners and Amazon readers.

Playful heroism at its finest!

This is a story you should not take seriously, if you're getting this book, go in knowing you're going for a ride of humor and a filthy casual being pushed into the role of hero. The author obviously loves this genre as I caught a lot of subtle references to other series. this book is over the top and playful and was a delight to listen to.

An MC with Common sense?!!

The MC doesn't just jump into every situation all willy-nilly, he takes the time to analyze the situation. More often than not his usual answer is "I don't give a damn". As long as it doesn't affect his life he doesn't care, but the moment his life is interrupted, he goes for the jugular. Looking forward to the next book.

Enjoyable listen

This story takes a nice break from some of the common stories out there. MC comes out in a unique way and the story is well done. World/system are interesting enough to keep you in as well.

Couldn’t resist!

I knew I needed to read this because of the author. But I’m still surprised how much I enjoyed it since the “I’m extremely powerful but I just want to do my own thing and ignore everything else,” trope usually bugs me beyond belief!
But after I fell off my high horse, mainly because the stones I was going to throw were just too heavy, I found myself enjoying this book a lot!

Especially the characters around the MC. They are fun and grow on you. Our favorite animal companions and the added treat of having dialogue for them was so hilarious and adorable!

The narrators also did a tremendous job! Able to give us the anime feel without having characters that have voices that make your ears bleed! Piper saves you from that fate and gives us unique character voices with nuance.
The same with the male narrator!
Both narrators bring the words and emotions to life.

Looking forward to the next book coming out on audible!
