I had two things in life that mattered. My mother and my music. Mama was taken from me too soon, and now music is all I have left. It's the thing that's pushed me right out of backwoods Georgia into Los Angeles, where the line between fantasy and reality shimmers and blurs. I'm finally making my way, making my mark. I can't afford to fall for one of music's brightest stars. Not now. Music is all I have left, and I'm holding on tight with both hands.

Summary
Award-winning, Wall Street Journal best-selling author Kennedy Ryan launches a brand-new series with a Hollywood tale of wild ambition, artistic obsession, and unrelenting love.
One moment in the spotlight....
For months I stood by, an understudy waiting in the wings, preparing for my time to shine. I never imagined he would watch in the audience that night.
Canon Holt. Famous film director. Fascinating. Talented. Fine.
Before I could catch my breath, everything changed. I went from backstage Broadway to centerstage Hollywood. From being unknown to my name, Neevah Saint, on everyone’s lips.
Canon casts me in a star-studded Harlem Renaissance biopic, catapulting me into another stratosphere.
But stars shine brightest in the dead of night. Forbidden attraction, scandal, and circumstances beyond my control jeopardize my dream.
Could this one shot - the role of a lifetime, the love of a lifetime - cost me everything?

5 stars just isn’t enough!!!
The book spoilt me for any other. The audio just finished me off.
The performance by the narrators took the book to a whole new level. The emotions broke me a times.
I’m absolutely in awe of Kennedy, she blows me away each and every time!
This book sure left me Reeling, so many emotions, truly an all-the-feels read..... very poignant. This is an amazing story, with many layers and levels…..
Truly Epic!
What a tremendous love story we have been given.
Nothing in life ever comes easy....this sure didn’t!
From the off you fall in love with Neevah and Canon. Both go into this with heartbreak in their past. Both have put up walls to protect themselves. But when their paths cross the pull is something neither of them can ignore, try as they might, being professionals needs to be a priority, however priority’s change, especially when the health of that loved one is suddenly a risk
I didn’t think anything could come close to Maxim and Lennix for a love story, but this absolutely does. A story within a story: Neevah and Canon what a love story that is. Then we have Dessi’s story. On their own they would have been brilliant, but together, extraordinary!
Kennedy threw everything at us here and I think I’ve just about survived.
So many passages highlighted for heartwarming and heartbreaking dialogue!
You are just another level Kennedy! ❤️

Kennedy Ryan is the truth
I have loved her books since I read Queen Move. I quickly found all that she’s written. Some hurt too much to read because she pulls out such deep pain in her people. Her writing is so real and raw that sometimes I can’t finish, like king maker. Or Long Shot. Even if they are too deep and painful for me, you can not doubt her skill and depth as one of the best writers out. And Jakobi (swoon), Eboni is one of my favorites too! Perfect read!!!

Stunning in scope and beautifully written
I know I am not going to do this book justice with my review because I am not eloquent like that but man oh man what a book. I know it’s going to be ambitious but this goes beyond everything I thought I could expect from Kennedy. It’s stunning in its scope and the multiple subplots that she weaved. It’s a beyond any romance I have ever listen to. She brought so much knowledge to the subject matter that I feel like I am getting a masterclass in the black renaissance of the twenties. I was googling the back story as I was listening. She writes with such conviction and depth of knowledge that informs the listener as well as tells an epic love story. if you are looking for scorching love scenes she has you covered.
Then on top of all that she weaved in the critical illness subplot that blows everything out of the water. The delicate way the story handles that tells you she has done her research into the subject matter and I stan her got all that she did to educate me about it.
Jakobi and Eboni really elevates the story with their performances. Their narration deserved all the accolades. The casting for this book is perfection.

A show stopper of a book
I L♥VED Reel!
Reel has two strong women stories in it - one who is from now and one is from the past. The strength of these two women, Neevah & Dessi, is the heartbeat running throughout the pages. Both women have a story that deserves to be told. Neevah is a stand-in actress who happens to be discovered during one of her fill-in performances and chosen to portray a strong Black woman, Desi, whose story isn’t widely known.
“Do you have any idea how many Dessi Blues there are? Black artists who shaped our culture, made our music, but whose contributions have gone unacknowledge? Their stories just slipped through the cracks. People who, by all rights, should be household names, but nobody knows their names? All they have to show for what they did is a plaque in their hometown or a line on Wikipedia, if that.”
I love that Neevah & Dessi lives, sort of, mirror each other. Even though they are living in different time periods they have a lot of similarities - a forbidden romance, performers, family turmoil, traveling, etc . . .
I did a mixture of reading this book and listening to it. I've been on a listening kick this year and I wanted to make sure I listened to part of this book. I enjoyed both reading and listening to REEL. Reel is 16 hours and 21 minute audiobook.
REEL
● grumpy / sunshine
● forbidden romance
● film director / actress
● chronic illness
● dual audio narration
● standalone

Whew!!!! I’m not crying, you are!!
I wish I can give this work of art a million stars!! This book has caught my heart and took it and held it close. Reel has produced REAL tears from me and it was a pre-order WELL WORTH IT!! I love how the author brought the Era to life! The Era of struggle for freedom and rights fought for by our ancestors who have paved the way for us. I love how Dessi Blue and Neevah’s stories are mirrored. This is a “reach for your goal no matter what” story where the characters win! In love, In life. The narrators, as ever, did an AWE-MAZING job!! And I can say whole heartedly that Kennedy Ryan has become one of my favorite Authors to listen to! I do recommend this book! It will definitely be on my “repeat” list!

What?????????? I loved it!!!!!!!!!!!
I couldn't wait to write this review as this book was AMAZING. I felt myself at times crying and wishing to experience the love that was shown. I actually tried to look up Desi and to read her story. The author did an outstanding job along with the narrators, The vocal was beautiful. I don't write reviews but I had to write this one. All 5's and nothing less. I appreciate the epilogue for clarity in the end. Give me some more.

Performance: The voice talent casting and sound editing merit 5-perfect-stars!
For me the most impressive element of this audiobook reading / listening experience was the narrating duo. They both had a impressive and believable range of male and female voices up their sleeves. I also liked the added touch of having Nicole Small sing.
Story: 4 stars
Quite honestly, I'm just not a big fan of celebrity romance which is why originally I had zero plans to read book 1 in this Hollywood Renaissance series of stand-alone novels until local romance bookstore The Ripped Bodice announced they were hosting a book club discussion of the Reel today, 10/3/21. Once my book buddy Nichelle alerted me she was indeed interesting in buddy reading and attending this book club discussion event. I dove into this Broadway-Hollywood romance and was surprised at how much I enjoyed it.
Favorite scene:
The phone herpes scene was HILARIOUS! I played it on speakerphone mode for my roommate and we both laughed at all the same beats. That scene was pure comic gold.
Target Audience:
I think it will be most enjoyed by fans of celebrity romance and readers of any fiction genre who are simply curious about what it was like for the artists of color in America before the Civil Rights movement forced the improvement so desperately needed in the U.S.A. at the time. We have come a long way but haven't yet achieved a society that doesn't hold a person's skin color against them. The new Hollywood Renaissance featuring some of our greatest talent will definitely influence and help us get there eventually.
Final Thoughts:
This was a very engaging and meaningful story. I'm definitely curious about the other stories to be told in the sequels and plan to read them if offered in audiobook format.
