Summary

Two reluctant heroes. One hell of a long day.

Amidst harrowing famine and deadly aliens who hunt humans and turn them into scaly mutants, Jarek is having a pretty good day.

He survived Earth's invasion, he still has his ship, and his prized exo-suit and AI-companion are safe and sound. But when his weaponized suit is stolen, he'll stop at nothing to get it back. Even if he has to break into the alien king's stronghold to do it.

On the way to spring his imprisoned informant, though, an energy-slinging arcanist named Rachel lays claim to the same captive. When he sees her throwing around grown men with telekinetic powers, Jarek has no room to argue. Especially not when teaming up may be the only way to get out of the king's stronghold alive.

One thing's for certain. Jarek didn't sign up for this crap. And neither did his fiery new friend. But together, they might just be strong enough to pull it off. Assuming they don't kill each other first....

Red Gambit is the first book in the irreverent, post-apocalyptic Harvesters series. If you like wise-cracking dialogue, galactic vampires, and endearing, gun-toting outcasts, then you'll love Luke R. Mitchell's powder keg of an adventure.

Buy Red Gambit today and suit up for a hilarious, high-octane thrill-ride!

Any additional comments?

Red Gambit stands out among the scifi/ fantasy books on the market right now. The story feature a main character whose sense of humor does not seem to ever fade no matter how dire the situation is.

The mightiest of ants is still but an insect.

Rachel Cross is looking for her brother Michael, and, rumours are, he's being held prisoner by the Red King, Jarek wants his Fela back, an exosuit he shares with Al, an A.I., and 'home' as well as giving him enhanced powers. Seems the only person who might know where it is just happens to be this very same Michael.

Great story, vividly written with superb characterisations and very fast paced, imaginative battle scenes.. Rachel is an arcanist able to channel powers: she's a tough, if frightened, lady looking out for her "boy scout" revolutionary brother, whilst Jarek is a sardonic, egotistical joker, a "let's see what happens kind of guy", and a pretty hot fighter even without his suit. And that Red King is a really nasty piece of work. There are other great personalities, too, such as Pryce ("Albert Einstein's evil twin gone mad scientist and starting to bald") and the past hero of the Resistance, missing now for five years, Alaric. So many comedic one liners in a rattling good adventure story.

I loved this book when I read the ebook and recommended it wholeheartedly to anyone looking for an addictive reading, nicely structured, fast fun book with a hint of superheroes.
So was very much looking forward to the Audio version. Probably my expectation slightly blighted my enjoyment in the listening. The story itself remained superb but, for this reader, the narrator, Steven Barnett, failed to impart the inherent comedy within it, his reading, though clear, being over enthusiastic especially in the earlier sections. It seemed to dwarf, rather than capture, the characters. Nevertheless, it is still a book I would recommend to anyone who has not read a text version.
Completely stand alone initially, it does end with a super big cliffhanger and the following story is as good, if not better.
