Gripping!
- By Richard Maidment on 15-07-22
Summary
He has planned well. He leads two lives. In one he's just like anyone else. But in the other he is the caretaker of his family's macabre museum. Now the time has come to add to his collection. Jakey Frith and Clara Foyle have something in common. They have what he needs. What begins is a terrifying cat-and-mouse game between the sinister collector, Jakey's father and Etta Fitzroy, a troubled detective investigating a spate of abductions.
Critic reviews
"What a terrific read! I've raced through it in every minute I could grab over the past three days.... It's a rare debut that has this much polish. Harrowing and horrifying, head and shoulders above most of the competition." (Val McDermid)

Great narrator and a brilliant story.
If you could sum up Rattle in three words, what would they be?
Engaging, thrilling and suspenseful.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Rattle?
When the Detective gets smacked in the face with a hammer - OUCH!
Which character – as performed by Karen Cass – was your favourite?
Jakey, Etta Fitzroy - I thought that the narration was fabulous and very engaging. I really enjoyed listening to this story.
If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?
"The Night Man is Coming"
Any additional comments?
I really enjoyed this story, even though the perpetrator was known from the start, the suspense of wondering if, when and how they might be caught was gripping. I liked the fact that the ending wasn't tied up into a neat bow and that questions remain.

One of the best most gripping thrillers I've read so far
Took a gamble because of the lack of reviews but assumed maybe thats because this had only recentky been released but so so glad I went for this. It takes a lot to grip me as I'm getting more fussy the more good books I read or rather hear and realise the difference between good and fantastic and this is one of the best thrillers so far for me more gripping than the girl on the train in my view as I listened to that and though it was really good this was more frightening. And wikl stay with me for longer. I now have to wait for the rest of the instalments . my other fav series of books were the Robert Galbraith series and the Roy grace series I just love detective novels I also finished the couple nexct door cant remember author name which was also OK though took a while to get going but this book here gripped me hard from the very start. A fun ride all the way so now i have Fiona Cummings to add to my list of audio books to look out for now. yES!!!!

Reality meets fiction
Where does Rattle rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
Normally as I have a 101 audiobooks in my audible list this will be difficult to do. However, on this occasion, I can compare it to Joseph Knox's Sirens, as they were both on the New Blood Panel in Harrogate. Just like Sirens, this book has unique protagonists allowing for a look into a world that most people will never see. Unlike myself who has a similar condition to victims in the book and if I was in that situation I may well be a victim myself. So this made for an interesting personal angle.
What does Karen Cass bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?
Reading an audiobook is a wholly different experience to reading a paperback, but as I cannot do this due to my dyslexia, narrators like Cass and others who allow the industry to provide these books ensure that people like me can experience the vast variety of crime novels out there. Cass did everything that I wanted from a narrator by not getting in the way of the story, although I do sometimes prefer a unique accent depending upon where the book is based. Cass allowed the short chapters to flow well and I felt comfortable listening to her for 11 hours.
Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
As I have already stated I have a condition which may well have made me a victim of the villain of the book. Although the possibility of this scared me, it didn't scare me as much as other books, such as Eva Dolan's After You Die, which was also based around a disability.

Something missing but unsure what?
The premise was good, the narration was good and I stayed until the end but ....... did not really enjoy the novel. Being an avid listener of many thrillers available on audible, I usually know within a short time, whether the book will captivate my full attention and fire my imagination and this novel did neither - yet I persevered to the end. Perhaps it was spoiled for me when I guessed the villain long before the police had a clue and therefore found much that followed to be unbelievable. Based upon this, I doubt I will move on to the second book - and should you read the synopsis for both novels, then you will understand why.
