Really great, but one minor reservation

I really enjoyed this book. I loved how different people authored some of the chapters to give more indepth info. Its great that the author made sure people understand that things like gestational diabetes can be prevented with lifestyle changes. My only complaint is that as an African myself, the part where history of birth was discussed was very stereotypical and not as as informative as I would have liked. East or West Africa are not monoliths. Different countries and even different regions in a single country have very unique cultural practices. so saying this practice originated in East Africa is a very broad generalization that doesnt match the reality on the ground. Other than that, this is an excellent book to replace the very basic what to expect books out there, that are not inclusive of the experiences of Black people.

Very Insightful

As a black woman going through her first pregnancy this was helpful however I cannot help but notice there is a lot of trauma in the story. As much as the author tried to empower the black maternity experience, it sounded very deeply traumatic. Obviously her story is helpful to other women who are going through similar situations as she had. I chose to pick what I liked and I did learn a lot so I'm thankful for this book.
