The job at Sunday Orchard was supposed to be temporary. A chance to gain some work experience, to have some fun. I had not expected to be welcomed into a family of gorgeous and weirdly efficient lumberjack-types, or to find purpose in the tiny Vermont town whose claim to fame seemed to be apple-based products and copious amounts of charm. And I most definitely hadn’t expected to fall for Knox Sunday, my grumpy, burly, fifteen-years-older, reluctant roommate, with his infuriating lectures, his hot-as-fire body, his superior attitude - I’ve never been one to put down roots.

Hooked from chapter 1
- By Christopher Young on 13-02-21
Summary
After the death of his wife, Tanner Rowe takes a step toward making her dying wish come true and buys the house with the dilapidated barn she'd been inexplicably drawn to in the picturesque Upper Peninsula. But after a year, he still can't get past his grief long enough to make the repairs he'd promised.
Recently out of prison, Cole Lachlan has little to his name. Homeless, broke, and without many options as a felon, Cole heads to Red Bluff with hopes of a second chance. There he meets Tanner, whose loneliness mirrors his own, and soon Cole is trading room and board for rebuilding the burned-out barn on Tanner's property that hasn't been touched in 70 years.
Turns out, the barn holds more secrets than either of them could have imagined. After unearthing a hidden journal from 1948, Cole and Tanner spend their evenings poring over the pages, reading about a young man pining after his best friend. The deeper they delve into this forbidden affair from the past, the more Cole and Tanner's own relationship shifts - from acquaintances to friends...to undeniable attraction.
But as they begin to deal with the newness of falling in love in the wake of Tanner's loss and Cole's past, they also become more determined to unravel the mystery of the young lovers who've captured their hearts, the rumors about the fire, and what really happened that fateful night.

You need imagination as author does not provide it
There's rarely any description of the area, the people or the even the characters other than the bland basics. If you ask me where this was set and what kind of town did they live in. I would shrug.
Love stories tend to fall into this style of writing but unfortunately this audiobook did not get me excited. This style is more of an audio description. He did this. He did that. He said this. He stopped. As if a teenager wrote it.
They have two parallel stories yet their narration choice was to have an husky older man read one protagonist point of view and then a younger man speak for the other protagonist. I don't see the point as both characters seem to have thoughts regardless of the named chapter. Also having the "historic" story read by same voice actors just confused things as there's no differentiation. This proves to me the level of performance and story. I would assume a part is about the main protagonist but find out it's the historic pair. Or vice versa.
Sadly, unless you're looking for a mediocre love story, I would pass on this.

Should have a trigger warning -Horrible ending
This book is a mishmash, the main relationship is lovely but the side story is harrowing and depressing.
I really wish there was a trigger warning with this book because the historical background of the side storyline made the horror of the ending for those characters really hard to take. I listen to audiobooks at night to sleep and I couldn't sleep after listening to this because it was so upsetting.

Had me bawling my eyes out, amazing story.
Two love stories 70 years apart. One where the men can show their love and the other where is is dishonourable. Present day both men are lost in grief and down on their luck. finding each other shines new light on life! Finding a journal written 70 years ago they both learn about the love story of two other men who lost everything for their right to be together. It was an amazing story from both authors. It had me crying on several occasions but also willing both couples on for their HEA.
Performance: on some occasions the editing was bitty and the recording of one voice actor was quieter than the other meaning i had to change volume settings often.

A Nonlinear Story With Heart
Wow. I loved the layers in this, between a past story and a present story. The past story takes place as journal entries that the current characters read together, so it alternates between present and past. It shows a good contrast from intolerance to acceptance for the LGBT community across decades.
This is also achingly sweet and wildly sexy. It held my full attention.
Narration is good.

Sweet but heartbreaking love stories
A few months ago a friend recommended this book to me and ever since I’ve hoped it would be released in audio. Mid May I got my wish and so my journey began with Tanner Rowe and Cole Lachlan. They are both living day to day, but for different reasons. A year ago Tanner lost his wife to cancer. She was the love of his life and the reason he bought the house he now lives in. It was her dying wish for him to live there, restore the burnt barn and find happiness again. But still after all this time he can’t do it. He lives in the house, barely existing. Until Cole comes walking into his life asking to borrow fishing equipment. Offering Cole a place to stay and three meals a day in exchange for him doing repairs to the barn is the perfect solution to both of them.
Cole is freshly out of prison, he has no job, home or money to his name. He’s also determined to do whatever it takes to never go back there again. Turns out, finding a job with a felony record is a lot tougher than he counted on so when Tanner offered him a place to stay in return of some repairs he was more than happy to take him up on the offer. As soon as he entered the barn he felt a presence, knew that it held secrets and not long after he found a hidden journal from 1948. A journal written by a young man in love with his best friend.
The story was predictable but still sweet. It’s divided into two timelines as we follow both Cole and Tanner’s journey of healing, friendship and then attraction and love. But we also follow the two young men from the journal, them falling in love how their relationship went from best friends to madly in love. The difficulties and danger of being in love with another man in the 1940’s. Both love stories were sweet, at times bittersweet and sad, but definitely worth every emotion it wrings from you. The ending was a bit much and farfetched, but then again you can’t always get it all and I was happy enough with the rest of it.
This book was narrated by both Tristan James and Kale Williams. Their dual narration was I’d like to say like a dance - no more like synchronized swimming. They switched of perfectly, had the same pacing and passion, and volume. It was seamless and beautiful. They worked really, really well together. It was almost too perfect in a way, they were too much alike.
Sometimes a dual narration makes sense, where the different narrators bring different skill sets to the table, different voices. To distinguish between different POV’s a bit more when it’s just one narrator. That was not the case here. Listening to audiobooks should be effortless in my opinion. It shouldn’t require a conscious effort on the listeners’ part to follow along the story, at least not in terms of who, where and when. Both Kale Williams and Tristan James have so similar voices and way of narration that you needed to really focus to know who was narrating and if it was the past or the present. I’m not saying that it was in any way bad – it just felt unnecessary for the dual narration as either Williams or James could and would have narrated the whole book with the same result.
A copy of this book was generously provided by the authors in exchange for an honest review for Love Bytes.

Love is so Beautiful
This book was sad but encouraging at the same time. Tanner and Cole’s connection is fated. I loved that we got to see almost 2 love stories. How they became a couple but also the struggles they faced. I can’t even imagine and I am glad I don’t have to but to have understanding and compassion for someone else situation is key in evolving. Or at least that is how I feel.
Cole has so much to work through and Tanner is so understanding because of his own past that even if he didn’t know it he was helping Cole.
And it was kind of the same for Cole, helping Tanner it really is a beautiful story of love.
I am glad I picked this up.
The narration was good a little different than I am used to but I still really enjoyed the book and the voices.

Great story, terrible narration
This is a lovely story but Cole’s narrator is so bad it round half the book.
His voice is raspy and nasal, he makes Cole sound old and haggard even if he’s supposed to be in his late 20s / early 30s. He also makes Tommy sound feminine and young when he’s supposed to be in his 20s
The written book would be a better purchase

Narration Made It Better Story
The duo narration of James and Williams lifted the story, making it above average.

Sweet, GFY story
Overall, I thought this book was interesting and held my interest throughout. However, the gay for you story line was a bit of a stretch. :-)
