About this listen
The new book in the brilliant Constance Fairchild series, from one of Scotland's foremost crime writers.
'THE NEW IAN RANKIN' Daily Record
'OSWALD'S WRITING IS A CLASS ABOVE' Express
Suspended from duty after her last case ended in the high-profile arrest of one of Britain's wealthiest men, DC Constance Fairchild is trying to stay away from the limelight. Fate has other ideas . . .
Coming home to her London flat, Constance stumbles across a young man, bloodied, mutilated and barely alive. She calls it in and is quickly thrown into the middle of a nationwide investigation . . . It seems that the victim is just the latest in a string of similar ritualistic attacks.
No matter that she is off-duty, no matter that there are those in the Met who would gladly see the back of her, Con can't shake her innate determination to bring the monsters responsible for this brutality to justice.
Trouble always seems to find her, and even if she has nothing to hide, perhaps she has everything to lose . . .

Constance Fairchild novel
This is the 2nd book with Constance Fairchild and I have to say she is growing on me. I like that the characters interweave with previous folk found in the Inspector McClean novels, especially Rose and Janie Harrison and Grumpy Bob. Was great meeting up with them again through a different perspective. looking forward to the next installment

Writer and Narrator in synch
What a partnership! I’ve loved all of James Oswald’s books which have been brought to life by narrators who are so attuned to them. Rose Akroyd is to the Constance books as Ian Hanmore is to the McLean books.
Rose made enough slight differences in the voices to make them easily recognisable yet still ‘fit for purpose’. Keeping that level of consistency throughout the book is marvellous.
Message to James: please keep going with both your characters as long as you can!
Thank you to all concerned..

Brilliant
I am sorry this book is finished I feel it will be a while until I get another that ticks all the boxes like all James Oswalds books. I did wonder if I would like anything so much after the McLean series. Con Fairchild has her own strong personality and beliefs that made me like her from the beginning of book 1. Both books in this series are Oswalds high standard and nothing in them disappointed me. Cannot wait until book 3 in the series is released. Highly recommend

Loved it nice link with other long term characters that we’ve grown to love. Wasn’t sure about this new series but am hooked. Looking forward to the next from Mr Oswald.

Comparison with inspector mcclean books
It’s not that I don’t like these Constance Fairchild books, they are perfectly okay and a good use of a credit... but they are just nowhere near as good as James Oswald’s Inspector McClean books. For example, Oswald clearly knows Edinburgh like the back of his hand but has he even visited London? He writes a male protagonist very well but can’t quite get his head around writing a female protagonist. The narrator doesn’t help as she can’t do a Scottish accent. So these books are okay, but I’d recommend you start with his others which are much better.

Excellent Story
Loved the way the story drew you in, you felt you were there with Con, feeling for her when the press always turned up.
Can't wait to read some more about her. Thank you to the Author James Oswald, this book was so different to your other work, in other words it was brilliant 😃

A great link between two cities
I love the way James has subtly brought characters that he's Tony McClain readers will be familiar with, and he has been able to give them an additional dimension through this series of books. absolutely love that probably his best character has appeared in all of the books so far.. the Fairchild series do feel a little more naive but still very enjoyable. I've already hoping there is a trip to Edinburgh in the next book.
