Summary

Oleg Gordievsky was the highest ranking KGB officer ever to work for Britain. For 11 years, he acted as a secret agent, reporting to the British Secret Intelligence Service while continuing to work as a KGB officer. He gave such a clear insight into the mind and methods of the KGB and the whole system of Soviet government that he has been credited with doing more than any other individual in the West to accelerate the collapse of Communism.

Here, for the first time, his meticulously planned escape from Russia is described. Gordievsky’s autobiography gives a fascinating account of life as a secret agent. It also paints the most graphic picture yet of the paranoia and incompetence, intrigues and sheer nastiness of the all-encompassing and ridiculous KGB.

Autobiography of Gordievsky

Having listened to Ben McIntyre's book I was interested to read the life account direct from Gordievsky himself. It didn't disappoint and the narration from a non native English speaker was excellent.

Best book

The best book that I’ve ever read or listened to. Gripping and full of detail.

All politicians & potential leaders who are inclined to soft-pedal on or even encourage Russian meddling might do well to read this (or listen on Audible if reading is too demanding).

Better than the Ben McIntyre book covering similar ground.

A British Hero

Oleg Gordievsky is not so well known in 21st century Britain - though he is alive at 79 and living out of plain sight in the UK. His contribution to defeating the evil edifice of Soviet communism is not to be underestimated. His story is warm, compassionate and at times humorous. Beautifully narrated by a master of his craft. A terrific audiobook.

An exciting story rendered dull by awful narration

Luckily I had already read the story before as written in an exciting spy book and so I knew the story but this is very badly read and makes it sound like an account of a shopping list!

A Unique Story!

Having listened to audible's A Spy and A Traitor by Ben Mcintyre which is also about Oleg Gordievsky I decided to hear the story from the man himself. Firstly while many of the facts are obviously the same as Ben's book for sheer drama and on the edge excitement Ben Mcintyre's book was better all round in my opinion.

Oleg deals with his whole life and family through to his defection and as such dilutes much of the excitement whereas Ben, who is a superb spy and intelligence storyteller concentrates on Oleg's spying activities leading up to the defection and his description of Oleg's pick up (which I will not go into and spoil for you) is both dramatic and masterful.

Fascinating

An incredible insight into social experiments carried out on a giant scale. What comes across is the paranoia feeding on paranoia, and official ineptitude and unlimited interference in people’s lives. Man’s inhumanity to man knows no limitation when freedom is limited and power is not.

Next step execution - eye opening

Next step execution - eye opening ,
Very interesting book & shows that the lives of the Russians , which I have also read in other books about Russia were very hard & unimaginable.
But this is a interesting book.
Narration was ok

Very much enjoyed this book

Would be keen to learn more about the history of modern Russia, bit probably from someone a little more objective.
