DS Jane Bennett takes charge of South London's Lewisham murder squad following the temporary suspension of her boss, DI Mike Lockyer. His involvement with a female witness resulted in her murder. Story
Women are rarely cold-blooded killers. But when famous philanthropist Hugo Fletcher is found dead, there is no doubt in anybody's mind that the killer is a woman. And it is clear from the precision of the planning that this was no crime of passion. It was an execution. The victim was revered the world over for his charitable work with trafficked Eastern European prostitutes, and as at least one of these girls is missing, Detective Chief Inspector Tom Douglas is certain that there has to be a connection.

Boring and hard to listen to.

Summary
A chilling and compelling debut crime thriller set in South East London. For all those who enjoy Peter James, Mark Billingham, and Peter Robinson. Three women have been found brutally murdered in south London, the victims only feet away from help during each sadistic attack. And the killer is getting braver.... Sarah Grainger is rapidly becoming too afraid to leave her house. Once an outgoing photographer, she knows that someone is watching her. A cryptic note brings everything into terrifying focus, but it’s the chilling phone calls that take the case to another level.
DI Mike Lockyer heads up the regional murder squad. With three bodies on his watch, and a killer growing in confidence, he frantically tries to find the link between these seemingly isolated incidents. What he discovers will not only test him professionally but will throw his personal life into turmoil, too.
After 10 years in London, working for a City law firm, Clare Donoghue moved back to her home town in Somerset to undertake an MA in creative writing at Bath Spa University. Never Look Back is her first novel and in 2011, whilst still an unpublished manuscript, was long-listed for the CWA Debut Dagger.

An excellent debut
Although this debut from Clare Donoghue does not quite live up to the hype it is an excellently written, constructed and characterised thriller. I did find myself completely gripped by it and found it to be something a little different from many of the current psychological thrillers. I always love multiple voices narrating as it seems to bring the story alive and the narrators here are excellent. I will definitely be watching out for what Clare Donoghue does next.

Really enjoyable murder/mystery...
Really enjoyed this murder/mystery. Spine tingling at times, and equally chilling. The storyline keeps twisting and turning, and just as you think you've worked out who the killer is, something changes your mind once more. Superbly absorbing, and I'll certainly be listening to more in the series.
Very good narration throughout from Karl Prekopp and Imogen Church. The switching between characters works well.

Modern detective story
Whilst the story is fairly well crafted it doesn't deserve the hype or the comparison with Peter James' novels. The fear and tension of being followed was well done but it didn't stick in my mind for long after I had finished listening.

Returned!
What disappointed you about Never Look Back?
I really expected to like this, but I found it to have an amateur feel to it. The role of the Psychologist surely can't have been well researched (speaking as a Psychologist). Its not a spoiler to point out that a Psychopath and a Sociopath are synonyms for the same personality disorder and the reason the Psychologist gave for the killer not being one was nonsense! I also disliked the smattering of americanisms. I recognise that authors want to be read internationally, but if an American chooses to read a crime novel set in London, I expect they want it to feel authentic. I'm sure that they can understand the term 'turn right' (as opposed to 'make a right').
Also, the story was a little convoluted and it isn't well written enough to get away with that.
Has Never Look Back put you off other books in this genre?
No, its my favourite genre.

A most enjoyable read
This is an exciting thriller and the idea of using two narrators is excellent as this avoids a female reader doing exaggerated husky voices and for a male reader to try out irritating soprano efforts. Mike Lockyer the detective is extremely likeable and human. The intrigue is led at an agreable pace. This is my first encounter with Clarie Donoghue and I look forward to reading other books by this promising author.

Never Buy This Book
I had such high hopes because I LOVE IMOGEN CHURCH! I thought I could handle it even if it was only "OKAY" because she would bring it up a notch, boy was I wrong. It's also narrated by a man (cant remember his name) and he does 75% of the narrating so that was severely disappointing but not nearly as disappointing as the storyline.
The storyline (this is one of 3 books) is all over the place. The author doesn't seem to care to get you attached to any of the characters but to jumping around from here to there to nowhere.
At one point I thought to myself did I skip a chapter, but no the author just put big holes and gaps in the story.
Don't bother, unless you have read every other book on Audible....seriously!

Thriller? Whodunit? Neither
This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?
It might be OK for someone really interested in the inner life of police officers and victims dealing with violence on a daily basis.
What do you think your next listen will be?
Probably a historical novel
How could the performance have been better?
The male narrator does a good job but I fear the female narrator is a bit whiny.
You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?
The plot doesn't hold together but the chief inspector's character is well portrayed.
Any additional comments?
Please note that my critical comments are born of misplaced expectations: I expected a police thriller but got a psychological novel.

Reads exactly like a BBC mystery script
It seems the author has decided she wants to write a book that can go straight to BBC mysteries. Character information is parsed out in tiny threads--the reader must stay tuned to get more information. The description of the detective was something like this: looks like a movie-star from Hollywood but a bit rougher. This wasn't meant to read, it was meant to be made for TV--especially because the very simple basic crime isn't worth a full-length novel.

No hook... Had High expectations but it was flat.
After just listening to Deep Survival, I just found this to be quite boring. Characters were shallow in my opinion. Story just plugged along but I never felt captivated. I forced myself through it since it was a long car ride, but I had to re-listen to several passages as I found myself lost in other thoughts. After investing so much time into it, I had to go all the way to the end, but I was glad when it ended. Production quality was A+, Narration was also very good.

Thrilling from beginning to end!
Clare Donoghue's debut novel is a faced paced, crime thriller that I couldn't put down until I finished in one sitting. The twists and who done its kept me guessing and on my toes! I had no idea who the killer was...and neither will you! Both narrators are perfect for this audio book!! Excellent performances!! I look forward to more Clare Donoghue in the future!!
