She doesn't wear my ring. We never stood before a preacher. The only vows exchanged were between our bodies; between our souls. But she was mine and I was hers until I ruined it. From the moment we meet, something sparks between us. But my family stole from hers, and my father is the man she hates most. I lied to have her and will do anything to keep her. For months I stood by, an understudy waiting in the wings, preparing for my time to shine. I never imagined he would watch in the audience that night. Canon Holt. Famous film director. Fascinating. Talented. Fine. Before I could catch my breath, everything changed. I went from backstage Broadway to centerstage Hollywood. From being unknown to my name, Neevah Saint, on everyone’s lips. Canon casts me in a star-studded Harlem Renaissance biopic, catapulting me into another stratosphere. But stars shine brightest in the dead of night.

All it took was one look, one kiss. The promises he made - I should have known better. He was a rock star and I had no time for a guy like him in my life. I fell anyway. I believed his promises. Held onto them and waited. But the thing about rockers is that their private lives are never truly private. Seeing him on the cover of a national tabloid shouldn't have surprised me. Seeing him with two women all over him? That nearly broke me. Now the memory of that first magical kiss was tainted.

At fifteen I fell in love. His name was Jake Stephens and he took the abandoned, lonely girl I had been and made me whole. His love was a pure and unconditional love that made every day better than the last; a fairy tale of my very own. But this story isn't about Jake. It's about Abel Madden; the man I meet after the fairy tale goes to hell. A cocky, arrogant man who says what he wants, does as he pleases, and makes no excuses for it. He irritates me--downright pisses me off at times--but he also brings me back to life.

The first time I met Merrick Crawford was during my job interview. Well, technically, I’d met him 20 minutes earlier when he’d barged into a fitting room a few doors down from my appointment. I yelled. He yelled. After an argument while standing in my bra, I proceeded to smash the door into the gorgeous jerk, trying to yank it shut. As you might imagine, I was freaked out when I discovered that the rude guy was my potential new boss. Yet he didn’t seem to recognize me. Or so I thought.... Until we wound up bickering again during my interview and he told me to go sniff my armpit.

Jude "Lucky" Lucketti wasn't just a sexy, brooding construction worker. He was my own personal hero, showing up in all the right places at the right times. Like when my car broke down and I needed a ride home, and when I face-planted on the sidewalk right in front of him and had to be taken to the emergency room. We became friends, and it didn't matter that he was 16 years older than me. We had a lot in common - like our love of old rock music and vintage fast cars and our aversion to relationships.

Summary
It seems the things worth keeping are often the hardest to hold....
I had two things in life that mattered. My mother and my music. Mama was taken from me too soon, and now music is all I have left. It's the thing that's pushed me right out of backwoods Georgia into Los Angeles, where the line between fantasy and reality shimmers and blurs. I'm finally making my way, making my mark. I can't afford to fall for one of music's brightest stars. Not now. Music is all I have left, and I'm holding on tight with both hands. I won't let go, not even for Rhyson Gray.
I had one thing in my life that mattered - music. The only constant in my life, it's taken me to heights most people only dream about, like a gift dropped in my lap at birth. I thought it was enough. I thought it was everything until I met Kai. Now she's all I think about, like a song I can't get out of my head. If I have to chase her, if I have to give up everything - I will. And once she's mine, I won't let go.

I Live You!
I have been meaning to start this series since meeting Rhyson and Kai in the Grip series. I wish I hadn't waited so long! It was amazing to finally know their story from the very beginning. The duet narration of Kai Kennicott and Wen Ross worked so well in this emotional slow burn romance. Listeners/readers should note that this is book 1, but all books in the series are currently available.
Kai and Rhyson have an instant connection, but I loved that Kai stayed true to herself and kept Rhyson in the friend zone, despite his clear desire for more. It allowed them to truly get to know the other beyond their physical attraction and connect on a much deeper level. Their relationship grows organically, even though Rhyson is a huge celebrity, and made for some major fireworks once things come to a boil. Yes, there is a lot of push and pull, and there were definitely times when I was frustrated by both of them, but the story flowed well and felt perfect for our characters. It was fun to see Marlon/Grip and Bristol make appearances as well, though I'm glad I met them first, otherwise I may not have been so enthusiastic to read the Grip series! LOL
Though I love both narrators, Kai Kennicott truly gives an incredible performance. She captured all of Kai's pain, fire, strength, anger, and joy so perfectly. I can't wait to start the next book!

good story. bad male narrator
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
riding the fence on that one.
What didn’t you like about Kai Kennicott and Wen Ross ’s performance?
Kai was great.
Wen Ross sounds like a game show host, which makes it awkward when he says things like "dick" "pussy" etc. "That made my dick twitch....come on down!!!" you get it.
Oh and his Irish accent he used made the character sound like a bad Swedish imitation.
Did My Soul to Keep inspire you to do anything?
read the book instead of listen to it.
Any additional comments?
The story itself is good. The audio pretty much ruined the book.
I will probably read the second book in this series rather than sit through another audio of game show host voiced male describing his sex acts.

Strange Narration but Good Story
This is a complicated love story between two musicians. Its a sweet take on rocker romance. The narration though had sighs and laughs to accompany the emotions and reactions. It was strange and a bit creepy. I've never heard a book read this way before - and I hope I never do again.

Fanatic Story, Fantastic Narration
Would you consider the audio edition of My Soul to Keep to be better than the print version?
Loved the writing and loved the narrators. They made it believable. I listened to a book prior to this one with a monotone-ish narrator and didn't know how much I was just going through the motions until these two narrators read this book to me. Narrators matter.
The story unfolds as a great love unfolds, beautifully and with plenty of obstacles. The angst is palpable and the characters are probable. Their story isn't cliche or over written in other books. It's got a character who actually loved her mom and without childhood issues from at least one of her parents. Kai isn't a whiny heroine and she's the anti-fan girl thankfully. The southern voice narration is great.
Love the boy bestie. His sister and Jimmie are awful. They could have both been related to Rhys mom instead of just one of them. Grip is annoying because of the anti-Kai vibe. If you're boy loves the girl, relax a little.
Rhys found something special to him, finally. Then he over analyzes and over protects it in ways that are common a jaded rock star/child prodigy. Not understanding the climb as a learning experience unique to every rising star. Not understanding he's suppose to be her yoga mat to fall onto when she's lost her way or is out of strength and needs to catch her breath. But I guess in ways unique to him, Kai, feeling territorial, protectiveness, and love in general is all a new and intense learning experience for Rhys.
All of the characters bring emotion to the reader/listener. That's one of the beauties(among many) of the writing for sure. This book down as one of my 2016 favs.

If you could sum up My Soul to Keep in three words, what would they be?
Great Love Story
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Yes, I wish i could have listened to it all in one sitting.
Any additional comments?
My Soul to Keep by Kennedy Ryan was a great book. I loved reading Kai and Rhyson's story. Kai was a character that everyone can not only relate to but they care for. Kai lost her mother and the only other thing that mattered to her was her music. She is so focused on her dream and nothing can get in her way like the hottest singer. Rhyson always focused on his music but couldn't get Kai out of his head. I loved Kai and Rhyson's story and can't wait to read more.
