Summary
A little music, a little dancing, a little murder at the spring ball.
England, 1925. After years shut away from the world, former detective Lord Edgington of Cranley Hall plans a grand ball to celebrate his 75th birthday. But when someone starts bumping off members of his scheming family, the old man enlists his teenage grandson to help find the killer before one of them is next.
The mismatched duo must pick the culprit from a gaggle of preening playboys, scatter-brained spinsters, and irate inspectors in this Agatha-Christie-style whodunnit that will have you racing to spot the killer. With a cast of eccentric suspects (both upstairs and down) and an adorable golden retriever along for the ride, Murder at the Spring Ball is a warm-hearted murder mystery full of intrigue, humor, and adventure.
Narrated by George Blagden from the TV shows Vikings and Versailles and the Oscar-winning film Les Miserables.

Really well put together!
I have a confession:
I started reading a Christmas story of Lord E, and didn’t like it - I gave up after chapter 14 (I think). It was said that one need not have pre-read any of the series to enjoy the Christmas tale, but that turned out to be untrue. Now that I have read (& heartily enjoyed), this tale and discovered the personalities, I shall revisit that book. But…
I may actually wait until it comes out as an audiobook. I truly believe that 90% of my enjoyment of this book is the superb narration by George Blagden! The characters absolutely come to life under his skill and Great Aunt Clementine’s awful singing could not have been bettered! His narration made a lot more of the text than I believe my imagination would have done. Lord E has more vigour in him, than I bestowed on him in the Christmas tale.
The story was also engaging and enjoyable. With a good amount of credible alibis and no red herrings! There weren’t any characters whom one would immediately dislike (not really), of the kind who grate on one…
This was a thoroughly enjoyable book and I do hope that the next one is released very soon - followed immediately by the next.

Not for me
I didn't finish, because the main character kept annoying me. Kudos to Mr Brown for writing such a convincing teenager who hero worships his grandfather and has all the blind spots that come with being 16, but that isn't for me.
The performance itself was lovely, but the narrator was too old to be a convincing 16-year old, so it kept surprising me when he talked about going to school and so on, taking me out of the story entirely.

An uneven cosy mystery
Some really good plot points and genuinely funny moments but marred for me by some very weird language. The constant use of visage for face and the use of anachronistic terms nearly stopped me from listening; 192Os upper classes would refer to the lavatory not the commode. A reading of Nancy Mitford would have helped with the setting.
Might have also helped the reader if they’d understood earlier that the detective was a second son who was a policeman before he got the title.
The narration was a little too posh for modern ears however probably accurate for the time.

Not that great
I don't understand all the stellar reviews for this title. It's not terrible, but it's certainly not fantastic. The main character is incredibly stupid throughout the whole thing, making obvious blunder after blunder and the "humor" is all based on him being publicly embarrassed because of these mistakes (which doesn't then stop him from making the next obvious one). It made me cringe throughout, though I kept listening in hopes it would get better. It didn't.

Entertaining Cozy
I am giving this book five stars, not because the writing is brilliant, but it is a five star cozy. Normally, I do not care for precious children/teens/animals. The young man as narrator however works in this formula. I liked the characters and the story. Looking forward to more of this series on audible.

Lots of fun
I do love a good old English country house mystery, and this historical mystery, set in 1925, was lots of fun. I enjoyed getting to know the family, almost all of whom were suspects, particularly the Marquess of Edgington and his grandson Christopher. I did not figure out whodunnit, which is fine with me; nor did I entirely accept that whodunnit was believable. Still, I enjoyed it and likely will listen to more.
George Blagdon, who I had not encountered before, did a fine job narrating.
Even though this book was just published in March 2021, there are already five more books in the Lord Edgington Investigates series, along with one novella. The novella is free on the author's website, Benedict Brown's Readers' Club".

Great first in series
This is the first in a series of cozy mysteries in 1925. The main character is the grandson of a former police detective and also the lord of a large manor and estate. The Lord had been mourning his wife's death and decided to have a spring ball and keep living, during which there's a death and more mayhem ensues.
The book is narrated by the grandson who lives at the manor on the weekends and lives during the week at a boarding school. It was slow getting into the narrative as the book is more told as a story, then lived by the reader, so that difference may annoy some who look to immerse themselves in a story. The mystery is very clever and the denouement was done in a very different and innovative way for a cozy. I enjoyed the book and the narrative. I didn't like the narrator singing the songs. Except for that, this appears to be the beginning of a fun series and I'd like to find out what other adventures the grandfather and grandson get up to.
