Summary

The third volume in the best-selling Wideacre trilogy. Set in the 18th century, they launched the career of Philippa Gregory, the best-selling author of The Other Boleyn Girl and Three Sisters, Three Queens.

Meridon, a desolate Romany girl, is determined to escape the hard poverty of her childhood. Riding bareback in a travelling show while her sister, Dandy, risks her life on the trapeze, Meridon dedicates herself to freeing them both from danger and want.

But Dandy, beautiful, impatient, thieving Dandy, grabs too much too quickly. And Meridon finds herself alone, riding in bitter grief through the rich Sussex farmlands towards a house called Wideacre - which awaits the return of the last of the Laceys.

Captivating

I enjoyed the 3 wildacre books one after the other and could not wait for the next instalment of the Lacey family! Very very enjoyable,an excellent listen! Very pleased audible suggested it as a book, or series of books I would like!

A bit long winded

I have listened to this while doing long walks and so it has been companionable. The book needed serious editing as quite a bit was repetitive and cliched. That said, it passed the time. A predictable end but then the whole of the trilogy is predictable. Still quite enjoyable and doesn’t tax the brain!

Disappointed!

I’d like to clarify my headline.
I was disappointed in the main female character in all the books, I only kept buying them till the end as I thought by the last one that, through the knowledge of her ancestors Julia( Meridon ) + her sixth sense, would fight her corner before the last chapter of the book. I know times were hard for women in those days but it was made easier for her by the will so I feel that this book in many ways didn’t do her justice. I’m in no way saying don’t read it as it was worth the read. I just feel it could have been hugely better.

Not Gregory’s finest hour

A very disappointing, weak storyline peppered with too much repetition to the point of embarrassment. The narrator was difficult to understand, with inflection on almost every alternate syllable coupled with a cotton wool voice swallowing her words. A real shame as Philippa Gregory usually has a much higher standard.

Great listen

This was my favourite in the Wideacre trilogy of books. Thoroughly enjoyed it from start to finish and after listening to the three books back to back, I am so sorry that it has come to an end.

A good end to a twisted saga

I was unsure whether to listen to Meridon as I had read very mixed reviews about it. but I am very pleased I did. Yes the narration is different to that in The Favoured Child but I found these characters a lot more realistic. In the Favoured Child a number of the characters had hopes and didn't speak up to injustices while in Meridon I found Sarah and Will to be much more believable and they fight for what is theirs right to the end. A book which is very much worth a listen and very enjoyable!

Absolutely brilliant

A couple of bad reviews nearly stopped me buying this audio but family sagas and long audio books are the best so this book appealed to me when it came up as the daily offer, sold!

I was half way through and absolutely fixated, totally addicted actually, that I immediately bought the other two as soon as my credits came through. Philippa Gregory, what can I say, research is brilliant, the writing is impressive and the story, so far, enthralling.

Listen to this audio, beautifully narrated, brilliant storyline and believable characters.
