Summary
England, 1346. For Thomas Blackstone the choice is easy - dance on the end of a rope for a murder he did not commit, or join the king's invasion. As he fights his way across northern France, Blackstone learns the brutal lessons of war. Vastly outnumbered, Edward III's army will finally confront the armoured might of the French nobility on the field of Crécy. It is a battle that will change the history of warfare.

I BELIEVE THIS IS THE START OF SOMETHING VERY GOOD.
Initially, when the book started, I got the feeling that the narrator felt a bit like me.
A little unsure as to weather this would be a good book or not.
Then suddenly, the book gained momentum and so did the narrator.
Sir Thomas Blackstone is or was quite an phenomenon.
A big hulking lad with enough brute strength and muscle most men would only dream of.
And then we saw his character develope. We saw him learn how to fight-and I do mean fight.
Now his strength was matched by speed and skill, and yet, despite a violent streak, there is a tenderness that doesn’t go unnoticed in this beautiful story.
A blood bath is beautifully interlaced with love, compassion, happiness and sadness.
I have already purchased the 2nd instalment and can’t wait to lose myself in the entire series.
Well written David Gilman.

Somewhat disjointed.
The chapters did not flow readily from one to the next and the back story was light

Great historical fiction, got slow in the 2nd act.
As said, great story, great performance. No complaints for either of them.
The fictional elements within a very interesting historical period, following campaigns during the 100 years wars.
flew through the first half of the book, was gripped by the characters developments and relations.
The book slowed down a lot during the 2nd half as the story strayed away from combat and war towards courting, marriage succession and politics.
The story picked up again, for me, when the plague was introduced. With the last hour and a half of the book once again being a gripping climactic finale. Which needed the slower second half of the book to build up towards with characters and motives.
Overall, great book and can't wait to continue the series.

Historical fiction at its best.
The first of David Gilman's books I have read and certainly won't be the last. The narration was on point too.
