Summary

He didn’t want me then.... Can I risk my heart now?

Twelve years ago, I thought Mason could be the one, but he wasn’t ready to be tied down, especially not to an omega like me. And when my brother’s sudden death left me raising his little girl, I had to forget all about the man who refused to be there for me. I never expected to see him again, and I couldn’t dream that I’d be his mate. Mason wants to try again, but this time, it’s my turn to reject him.

But the adult Mason is 100 times more considerate than the guy I knew in college, and even though I should protect my heart, I can’t help but start to open up again. Maybe, it really is time for a second chance.

Even if we are ready to give it a shot, a lot of things have happened in the past 12 years. And when our relationship is tested, those years might be too much to overcome....

Sweet second-chance love story

I enjoyed this sweet second-chance love story. River loved Mason when they were younger. but Mason didn't feel the same attachment. River was heart-broken when Mason blew him off to attend a party, then devastated when he loses his brother and Mason is not there to support him. River moves on while taking care of his niece. River and Mason meet up 12 years later, and the older Mason wants River now. Can River forgive Mason and can they reconnnect, or have the passage of time and River's duties to his niece separated them forever? I loved River and Izzy; Mason took me more time to warm up to. I completely sided with River in his pain and righteous anger, and I appreciated later how he considered the adult Mason and forgave him when he found out what really happened when River's brother died. It didn’t excuse the way Mason treated River when they were in college, by bragging about his sexual conquests when he knew River loved him, but I guess I can give a little leeway for the idiocy of youth.

The narrator suits the story and the delivery was pleasant, well-paced, and emotionally consistent with the characters' feelings.

I received a free copy of this audiobook at my request and am voluntarily leaving this honest review.

Nice addition

A nice addition to the Tiberwood Cove series by Liam Kingsley. Mason and Rover are great characters to get to know, and it was a pressure to spend the time with them. Mark Stilwell did a good job with the narration.

Most complex character in the series

I loved River from the first chapter of this book. It was clear he had been putting up with Mason's disrespect for years in order to maintain their "friendship", but finally he stood up for himself and ended it. That should have been the most awful part of the night, but it only got worse with the call from the police about a car accident involving his brother and his brother's partner. He immediately flew out to be with them but the worse happened and he is left as legal guardian of his niece. Through this entire nightmare, he messages Mason for some support but never receives a reply. I was now, fully in the "I hate Mason" stage of this narrative. That did not change immediately when they met years later in chapter two. Mason still seemed to be focused on how River had hurt him, not the other way around. Not only was he going to have to do some major work to get a second chance with River, he was going to have to do even more work to get a second chance with me. I dared the author to make me care about that sorry excuse for a man. I should have known...These two have to learn how to forgive, how to communicate, how to deal with River's controlling, abusive ex and how to deal with a couple of big surprises that turn out to be good ones.

Most books I read in the M/M genre are dual POV books and while I enjoy that, I don't think it is mandatory for all. This book, however, could never work without that dual POV. In order for the reader to forgive Mason, we have to be able to see inside his head and heart to feel his true remorse over his past behavior. The author handles that convincingly and by the end I was happy to see these two guys together.

I have read all the previous books in this series and enjoyed them all. This is one of the best. The plot is meaty, the characters grow and develop and we get to go deep into a claiming ceremony. A definite five star read.

Mark Stilwell was perfect in his performance. Just like when I read it, I loved River immediately. Mason is still the harder character to like and he has to go through significant changes in this story to redeem himself. The performance caught all his complexity and fully sold me on his redemption.

Mason’s redemption...

Mason knew his fated mate in college but he was not ready. Riv had to mature early and take care of his brother’s baby. When they meet again it’s not good. Riv too angry and Mason oblivious. It’s a cute story with Izzy and her tween ways, and Mason showing Riv it’s all worth it. Good narration too.

Second chance for my Alpha

Mason was my best friend, and I thought my true love, but he hurt me in the worse way possible by ignoring me and flaunting omegas in my face. I finally had enough and ended our friendship, which was before I learnt of my brother's death. My life then changed forever.

I now had a baby girl who called me Papa, 12 years on and having a preteen to bring up. Who should I bump into but Mason? How did I feel about that, Had Mason changed enough to consider a friendship with him. Did I want my daughter to meet him? So many questions

This is a great story, full of ups and downs. Love and loss. Omega/Alpha, Shifters. Never having read any of the series before, I was happy that it didn't take away from this story.

I will try and read some of the others now as I enjoyed it a lot. I did speed up the narrator to 1.25.

Second Chance

What's worse than waiting forever to meet your fated mate? Meeting him too soon and being too immature to treat him right. That is Riv and Mason's past. We see them try to let go of past hurts and overcome it. You really feel for both during this. You understand why Riv wants nothing to do with Mason, but you also feel for Mason's pain. Enjoyable second chance book with really good narration

Forgiving the Past.

Timberwood Cove Book 10, ongoing series. Best read/listened in series order due to side characters from other books. This is Former college friends Mason and River's story and takes place twelve years later. Great friends to lovers with some twists plot and brought to life brilliantly by Mark Stillwell.

Not the best, but generally good

Honestly, I think this was one of my least favorite stories from the Timberwood Cove series, mostly because of the beginning. I appreciated the overall second chance between Mason and River though their attitudes often didn’t work for me. I did enjoy listening to the narrator however.

Sexist (sort of)

So we all know that alpha/omega dynamics in M/M romance novels are just a way to bring the politics of heterosexual relationships into a book where both partners are male, right? Ok, so given that, here's a newsflash: women aren't, like, completely helpless without a man. I know, it's a shock, but believe it or not, it's true! And consequently, omegas should not be completely lost at sea without their alpha either.

Every time River, the omega in this book, tries to do anything on his own, the rest of the characters (and the author) roundly chastise him. "Oh, you thought you could show a modicum of independent thought? Silly little thing!" or, equally irritating, they patronizingly compliment him for making the attempt, even if it's obviously bound to fail. He can't cook, he can't deal with his daughter having friends, he DEFINITELY can't deal with the final crisis of this novel, he can't do anything at all. It even takes Mason, an alpha, to recognize that River's daughter is going into heat for the first time. And River is supposed to be an obstetrician! "I feel so dumb that I didn't see the signs." "Well," Mason allows condescendingly, "you were busy." Remind me never to take my werewolf daughter to River for a checkup.

The setup, and the "regret" of the title, is that River and Mason knew each other in college, River was in love with Mason, but Mason, knowing River was his mate and yet not ready to begin a relationship, strung him along and even rubbed other relationships in his face. When River is called away from the college, Mason breaks his phone, and so River thinks Mason has abandoned him in his time of need. When, years, later, the circumstances are discovered, River is like "I wish I'd known all these years that I was mad because of a misunderstanding!" No, dude, you were mad because he was a jerk to you for years. The misunderstanding was just icing. No matter, everyone in River's life advises him to just get over it already, so he does.

River and Mason jump right into a relationship again and anything River tries to do on his own from that point forward is a miserable failure, and Mason has to step in and save the day. Cripes, is this what it's like to be a woman reading a romance novel? Maybe the feminists have a point. Eventually their original roles from college are reversed--sort of--when River commits some very vague sin that amounts to not wanting Mason to control every aspect of his life, which results in Mason storming off like he's been grossly wronged. Luckily (eyeroll), once River learns his place he's allowed his happy ending.

And yeah, I know, what was I expecting reading an mpreg alpha/omega shifter story? Honestly, though, Liam Kinglsey is--occasionally--better than this. He even somewhat addresses the issue in book 13 of this series, Kihyun's Vow, when the omega bristles under the alpha's thumb and, miracle of miracles, isn't immediately shut down by the author. The immediate sequel to this one, focusing on the peripheral characters Danny and Anniston, is also much better, because Danny isn't a complete pushover.

Mark Stilwell is a new narrator and he is FANTASTIC. I wish some of the other books in this series could be re-recorded with him as the narrator (cough number six cough). The narration definitely bumps this one up a star for me. The writing itself is also much better than any other mpreg shifter writer out there.

Unbelievable and sexist

I usually love this author. I enjoyed all the other books in this series. But Mason is a jerk. He doesn’t think of anything but his own feelings. Then River is just like “oh, you lost your phone. Well that makes everything you did ok.” Then Mason proceeds to be completely controlling and condescending. It just is completely contradictory to what River said he was attempting to get away from.

Second Chances

This is book 10 in The Timberwood Cove Series. I would read the previous books to fully enjoy this book. The plot was entertaining and it was steady throughout the book. I found the story and characters likeable. The characters were developed and thought out. Mason and River are the MC’s of this book and mates. The narration was okay. I can recommend this as a good read/listen. I voluntarily read an advance copy of this book for an honest review.

Mason’s regret

This series is really great. I like getting to know more about different characters and getting their stories. For this book we get Mason and River’s love story which is a second chance fated mates. Mason made a choice a long time ago to escape and run away from certain things when he took on guardianship of his niece. I liked that these two got a second chance for their love story. There were some parts of the story I had some trouble with but over all a very good story

Mason & Riv

I received an ARC of this audio for my honest review. River and Mason were best friends back in college. After his brother past away he got custody of his niece Izzy. He escaped a controlling alpha Luca who is Izzy's uncle. After 12 years Mason sees River at a Christmas party and bolts. River is now a doctor who delivers babies and Mason is back in school to become a children's dentist. River is Mason's true mate and I'm glad that things worked out for them. Izzy was ecstatic to have Mason become a part of their family. I thought Mark did an excellent job narrating this story.

Another Timberwood Cove home run

I love this series and this book is no different. Mason was “the one” in River’s eyes but he was too immature and a party boy to settle down. One day River’s entire world turns upside down and he gains custody of his brothers infant daughter. 12 years later he finds himself back in masons world and Mason is finally ready to settle down. But River now Has to consider his daughter - is Mason’s change of heart enough? Narration is fantastic and this entire series is a must read

It’s a toss up

I’m on the fence with this one.

I liked the idea, the second chance romance, the single parent, I was all here for that, but it felt a little run on to me. Like I think there was a lot of filler stuff that wasn’t necessarily needed. Other than that I did enjoy it.

I thought the narration by Mark Stilwell was great. He’s a new to me narrator and I really enjoyed his voice.
