Oh Olivia

An otherwise great reading from
the fantastic Olivia Coleman spoilt by the worst voicing of a little boy in the history of voice overs. Michael sounds like a nasty little munchkin with strep throat and his dialogue is so clipped he comes across more as a Twin Peaks character than a small boy. Not sure what she was thinking but so bizarre as to distract from the story. Sample before buying.

Better than the movie.

I can see why P. L. Travers did not like the movie. I feel there were probably about five scenes from the book that were included in the movie. I'm happy now I know the 'real' story, as it was intended, without being 'Disney'fied.

Good but...

It was an enjoyable experience but too short for my liking. Olivia Coleman read it beautifully and it really is a good audio book for long car journeys although, 3 hours is rather short so, if you like a bulky book, then this is not for you.
Personally I really loved it (please take note I am 11) it deserves a lot of praise and the reader has great personality and that is obvious in the characters. I disliked the voice for Michae l and found one or two of the high pitched women’s voices annoying.

Xxx 👌🏼

Utterly delightful

The book (as so often happens) surpasses the film, with all of Travers’ humour and imagination coming through in entirely unknown sections (my and my children’s particular favourite being the babies chapter talking to the sun and bird).
And Olivia Colman, unsurprisingly, is fantastic, I’ve been recommending it to everyone.

The voices are not as expected

To bad the reader doesn't have what it takes to give life to this great story. The voice that she perform for Michael is just wrong.
I saw a review saying that and I can confirm it.
This book deserves a lot better.

Superb Reading of a Classic

Olivia Coleman throws herself heart and soul into this classic tale, a wonderful range of voices perfect for each character. Thoroughly recommended.

Practically Perfect in Every Way

This does differ a lot from the Disney film in terms of events but the characters are brought to life superbly by the narrator. It is a joy from start to finish for adults and children.

"She's something special, you see."

Some 37 years ago, my three years old daughter was diagnosed with a very rare form of cancer and, together, we spent most of the next fifteen months in near isolation in a small hospital room as she endured the radical chemotherapy, mostly bed bound and and very ill. But it was, strangely, a happy time. With little else that we could do, we watched video films, including that of Mary Poppins which we saw at least once every day. I became word perfect.
But I never read the original book until now.

The film and the book are, predictably, not the same: there is much more brightness and laughter in the film, the Nanny who agreed to stay in the Banks' household 'until the wind changed' less stern and self centred, too. Yet the magic of childhood and mysteries beyond the everyday vision is decidedly there and, quite honestly, I loved this little 85 years old story, in this case narrated by Olivia Colman, a very British reading, clear, nicely modulated, and well articulated with character voices (and, thank goodness, no dreadful chimney sweep accents).

Such fun. Recommended..

Better than the movie, hardly an achievement

A book about children whose mother is unemployed but hires a nanny nevertheless. Nanny gaslights children most of the time and children grow attached to aforementioned smug and snappy woman. Olivia Colman is the best narrator ever.

AMAZING INTERPRETATION

The story itself is one of the most whimsical, weird, charming, moving stories I've ever read and the performance of the reader was IMPECCABLE. I was constantly sucked in and felt every emotion along the way. Fantastic.
