Summary

After Philip Stenning is involved in a near-fatal plane crash, he feels he owes a debt of gratitude to the man who rescued him. However, his mysterious saviour is an escaped convict, and Stenning’s determination to help leads him into a tense and dramatic adventure of intrigue, drug-running and murder.

Marazan was Nevil Shute’s first published novel, and in his autobiography, Slide Rule, he recalls writing the book twice over before rewriting large portions a third time.

Of its time

A real adventure story, very much of its time. The thirties seep from every phrase and some views are decidedly old fashioned. The story is innovative and exciting, if simple!

Early Nevil Shute

This is a good novel with a strong plot. Classic Shute. But some of its language and attitudes jar in our current age. Shute lost those attitudes as he progressed through his novels.

Not one of Shute’s best

I’m a big fan of Shute and this has his trademark simple and compelling storytelling quality. I only scored this 3 as I found it a bit of a ridiculous story and can’t believe the protagonist would have acted as he did. This ruined it for me, as the best Shute books make you really believe in the characters above all else. Maybe this was something he developed in his later books.

Enjoyable compelling story

Nothing over fancy, just a good honest compelling and enjoyable tale. Yes, it's very much of it's time, but I view that as a good thing, given the state of the world these days.

Another excellent Nevil Shute

Another excellent story from Nevil Shute so we’ll read by Jeremy Clyde. I wish all audiobooks were as well read as this!

I only ‘got into’ Nevil Shute because of audible, and find his writing gripping, totally credible and very easy on the ear. That this was his first story is amazing.

Highly recommend as a summer easy-listening story.

Good Story

Naturally it is dated writing but that is the charm of Neville Shute, it was written a long time back when life was much simpler

A great adventure.

Brilliant old fashioned adventure story, with well rounded characters. Well told, & beautifully read by the narrator.
