Summary

By the summer of 1215, King John of England had lost control of his kingdom. In June his rebellious barons forced him to attach his regal seal - under oath - to a remarkable document. The so-called 'Great Charter' established an Englishman's right to habeas corpus and set limits to the exercise of royal power. For the first time, an English king had agreed to a document that limited his powers by law and protected his subjects' rights.

This is a lively and well researched account of the events leading to the Magna Carta and its creation. Gives an excellent historical context to the famous treaty without wandering around aimlessly in the desert of philosophical speculation about its subsequent importance.

Enjoyable and informative summary

Engaging and informative. I feel the author could have done a slightly better job narrating his own work.

Very good

I’ve listened to a few of Dan Jones’ audio books and they’ve all been excellent. I really like the way they manage to convey the historical facts and historian’s thinking while holding the listener’s interest and keeping the story flowing.

Very interesting and informative

In 3 hrs 20 min I enjoyed hearing a concise historical overview of Magna Carta tracing the behaviours of Henry II, Richard 1st followed by King John triggering, quite understandably, the Baron's uprising. Following this Magna Carta's impact then and up to the present day internationally. Simply explained, fascinating details, I was gripped throughout. Dan's reading of his own book was excellent. I enjoyed hearing the whole Magna Carta read in relatively modern day English in the last chapter.

OK for young people

I found this simplistic, despite good reviews. The reader seemed to be reading for young children.

An Excellent Listen !

Really enjoyed the trip through this book and will definitely drop in and out of again, however if only they could have given the chapters headings instead of numbers as other reference books do.

Well work the credit!

Excellent and most enjoyable!

I will happily read quite literally anything that Dan Jones writes. "Magna Carta" is sadly much shorter than Jones's other books but more than matches their excellent quality. Unlike most authors, Jones is also a fantastic narrator and his reading of his own work is flawless and most enjoyable.
