Story
A year had passed since Ben Holiday bought the Magic Kingdom from the wizard Meeks, who had set a series of pitfalls against him. Ben survived, by the aid of three loyal friends: Questor Thews, and ill-trained wizard; Abernathy, a talking dog, the court scribe; and the lovely Willow, who sometimes had to be a tree. But Ben had been troubled by dreams of disaster to his former partner, Miles Bennett. Yet when he returned to Earth, Ben found Miles doing splendidly. The dreams had been a trap by Meeks, who had returned to the Magic Kingdom as a tiny insect hidden in Ben's clothing.

The Four Lands has been at peace for generations, but now a mysterious army of invaders is cutting a bloody swath across a remote region of the land. An inn is a place to rest, a place to talk and share stories, a place to find adventure, or a starting ground for quests and legends. It is in this world, at least. To Erin Solstice, an inn seems like a medieval relic from the past. But here she is, running from Goblins and trying to survive in a world full of monsters and magic. She’d be more excited about all of this if everything wasn’t trying to kill her. But an inn is what she’s found, and so that’s what she becomes; an innkeeper, who serves drinks to heroes and monsters. Mostly monsters. But it’s a living, right?

Summary
Here in his first non-Shannara novel, Terry Brooks has written a gripping story of mystery, magic, and adventure - sure to delight fantasy listeners everywhere.
Landover was a genuine magic kingdom, with fairy folk and wizardry, just as the advertisement has promised. But after he purchased it, Ben Holiday learned that there were a few details the ad had failed to mention.
The kingdom was in ruin. The Barons refused to recognize a king, and the peasants were without hope. A dragon was laying waste the countryside, while an evil witch plotted to destroy everything.
Ben's only followers were the incompetent court magician; Abernathy, the talking dog who served as court scribe; and the lovely Willow - but she had a habit of putting down roots in the moonlight and turning into a tree. The Paladin, legendary champion of the kings of Landover, seemed to be only a myth and an empty suit of armor.
To put the final touch on the whole affair, Ben soon learned that the Iron Mark, terrible lord of the demons, had challenged all prospective kings of Landover to duel to the death - a duel which no human could hope to win.
The task of proving his right to be king seemed hopeless. But Ben Holiday was stubborn....

Great story by great writer
I read this when it was first published years ago and thoroughly enjoyed revisiting it through this audible edition. Terry Brooks is an exceptional fantasy writer, creating endearing characters and a truly magical world. Unlike many fantasy writers he can actually write! He has a pleasing style with no irritating repetition or jarring vocabulary and though this is a light hearted story it moves along at pace and is very easy listening. The narration by Jeremy Arthur is brilliant and I found the whole a pleasure to listen to. I have already started the second in the series.

LOVE this story. I read it every year.
Terry Brooks is one of my two favorite fantasy authors. Robert Jordan is the other. Magic Kingdom for sale- sold is a joy to read and very original. Mr. Brooks writes characters that you come to care about. It is the same in all his series. Jeremy Arthur did a fantastic job bringing this to life.

Old school Fantasy
This is an older fantasy novel and it's clear that it was written in a different time. Both in a good and bad way.
The describing of the heroine is almost worthy of r/menwritingwomen on reddit. At the same time the hero recognise misplaced anger, have a personal developmental journey and is, in a way, far more innocent than a modern person would be.

Wasn't sure what to expect but definitely wasn't expecting anything this good. the story was well told and engaging and the narrator performed the story wonderfully. Was a wonderful combination. the magical parts of the story was equally balanced and not overwhelming. Characters were balanced out and a single character didn't overshadow the others. Was planning to buy the series when it was listed on Audible a few years ago, but wasn't fast enough and the series was removed. Now in 2022 all six titles are back and re-recorded with another narrator. Having learned my lesson last time, pre-ordered all six and all is well!!
