Summary
Using her best social-climbing instincts and refusing to be embarrassed, Lucia sets out to conquer London and mingle with the beau monde. Soon a secret group of 'Luciaphiles' springs up; the social climbers who make up its rank never tire of watching her get into and out of all kinds of trouble.

Narration topping, abridgement unnecessary.
Lovely narration - easy to distinguish between characters, and it's a nice change for a Benson adaptation to have a Georgie who is not done in exactly the same camp voice. The abridgement was done very skilfully, it's just a pity they felt they had to abridge it at all; it is so wonderfully written that there is really nothing to cut despite the fact that this is not the best of the novels in the Mapp and Lucia series. In all, a thoroughly enjoyable listen.

Why on earth was it abridged?
This is not a long novel and most purchasers will be familiar with the story and look forward to all the events in it, so why cut chunks from it?

Gently amusing
Not as funny as some of the other Mapp/Lucia stories, but amusing nevertheless and brilliantly read by Miriam Margolyes.

Other days, fascinating times.
A perfect picture of the early nineteenth century, cars are in but so are endless numbers of servants .
No room for all that chat these days ALAS.

Wish they didn't abridge the story
Lucia in London is one of my favourites of the Mapp and Lucia books, and I've read it a number of times. while shortening the story they chopped some of my favourite scenes, and a lot of they characterization that I find so essential to fully grasping these characters. Miriam Margoyles did a very good job bringing the characters to life, even though her Georgie came out stiff and a little dull.

Shame the story is abridged
And dare I say that Miriam Margolyes' narration is not as good as Nadia May.......

My desert island books...
Don't know where I'd be without Lucia. I can listen to these books again and again and they never fail to delight!

My favourite Lucia book beautifully read
Who was your favorite character and why?
The characters are priceless and wonderfully brought to life.
Which scene did you most enjoy?
Queen Charlotte's mittens always make me laugh out loud.
Any additional comments?
It is s shame that it is abridged so much, but it makes it very accessible

not bad for an abridgment
I LOVE the Lucia series and dislike abridgments, so I avoided this version for a long time. They did a good job on it, however, and captured the story well. not a big fan of the narrator, but meh, it gave me a Lucia fix for part of my long drive. I wish so much that I could purchase full length of the Mapping and Lucia series on Audible!

Sadly abridged
Miriam Margolyes is an excellent reader--personable without being showy or intrusive.
The story is an evergreen bauble that I have revisited at least five times over the past 35 years.
The text, however, has been needlessly abridged, omitting some of my favorite parts (such as "These duchesses! They give one no peace!"). There are places where the setup to a situation is included but the payoff has been omitted (such as Olga's reaction to Lucia's appraisal that Cortot would have given a better performance of the piece heard on the radio).
Because of the abridgment, I can't recommend this version to anyone who hasn't read the book. At best, it is like being "reminded" of the book, not like experiencing the book.

Abridged
This version is abridged within an inch of its life. Some of the funniest parts are missing. Good reader, tho.

Not as winning as other Lucia tales, tho' fun.
Miriam Margolies, the brilliant actor, is a delightful, energetic narrator but somehow manages to flatten Georgie and make American Adele sound like a gangster's moll. Otherwise, delightful performance of minor Benson gem in the wonderful Lucia saga.
