Summary

The Talented Mr. Ripley meets Catch Me If You Can in this riveting, stranger-than-fiction story of the French con artist whose crimes span decades and continents.

In 2019, veteran journalist Mark Seal began investigating the suspicious death of music mogul Peter Ikin. Just 32 days before he was found dead in his Paris hotel room, Ikin had married a handsome, debonair Frenchman named Alexandre, who would claim to be entitled to his late husband’s fortune. As Seal dug into the case, he had no idea that tracing the incredible life of Alexandre Despallieres would take him from Paris to London to Beverly Hills, and unspool a web of intricate plots and deceptions that, for a time, made Despallieres a millionaire and left multiple alleged victims dead in his wake.

Mark Seal uncovers impossible stories about a man who seems to evade justice at every turn.

Interesting story

I had never heard about this guy before so didn’t know the story. The book is not well laid out and all over the place. Could have been written in some sort of chronological order. A lot of the characters were not fully explained. This audio was only 4 hours long and I thinking it needed a better story telling. Too jumbled.
Too bad because it’s a fascinating story

Fascinating true crime story

This is a riveting tale about a deranged (yet beautiful, charming) psychopath. Can hardly believe it’s true. Highly recommend.

Amazing True Story

This was a remarkable story about a current person. It shows how our human “default setting” to believe people are telling the truth can work against us. Charm and good looks can be disarming and delude us. And the consequences in this instance were deadly.
The only distraction was that the narrator’s weird pauses often made the end of one sentence sound like the beginning of the next. Overall, this was a fascinating tale—and a disturbing one—of greed and murder.

NEVER ENDING😑

The narration was great. That really was the only redeeming feature of this book.
We get it. The main character, Alex, was a narcissistic snake. He was a wolf in sheeps clothing. Perhaps the author wanted us to see exactly how long this sociopath would try to carry this travesty on.

Inventing Anna-ish

Like the story of Anna Delvey, it’s almost unbelievable yet based on true events. If you like real crime and stories of how rich and famous people are all too human and trusting, a good story

Con Artist Killer

This was the story of a con artist and killer who got away with murder. After killing his own family, he tricks wealthy people into giving him money and their time. When the party was over, he would poison them, since it supposedly would be hard to trace. The bulk of this story took place in Europe and unfortunately the con artist and killer died before he could be brought to justice. A very sad story, with many good people whose lives were ruined. Jonathan Davis does a wonderful job on narration.

Captivating

This is a captivating true story about a man who I would consider one of the most manipulative & crafty con artists. He was able to spin every situation he came across for a long time … until he wasn’t.

Psychopath Conman

An amazing story of a psychopath and his successful conning of every type of person - from regular people to the super wealthy. The details of his schemes and how he read people to customize his deceit provide a cautionary tale. Do you ever really know another; no matter how enticingly they present themselves ?

Interesting story but…

Told in tabloid style. Writing could have been crisper. I still cant believe how easy it is for folks to be conned, no matter the income level.
