From the Sunday Times bestselling author of Fleishman Is in Trouble comes a darkly exhilarating novel about an American family and its inheritance - the safety and wealth that they fought for, and the precarity of their survival that is their legacy.
In 1980, a wealthy businessman named Carl Fletcher is kidnapped from his driveway in the nicest part of the nicest part of Long Island. He is brutalised, held for ransom and then returned to his family. Miraculously, Carl, his wife and his three kids are left to move on with their lives, and resume their prized places in the ongoing saga of the American dream.
But nearly forty years later, when Carl's mother dies, the trauma that has been bubbling beneath the Fletchers' lives all this time surfaces at last. It becomes apparent that Carl has been quietly pursuing closure to the kidnapping for all these years, and his wife and children must face that the money that they believed bought them safety was actually never capable of doing any such thing.
Long Island Compromise spans generations, winding through decades of history all the way through to the wild present, dealing along the way with all the mainstays of American Jewish life and the timeless questions about wealth, trauma, and the American soul.

Superb
Hooked from the start. I loved this audible. The characters were so beautifully written, I felt fully immersed as the story evolved. Their passed down trauma. What a writer… thank you for this book.

Easily one of the finest writers working in America today
Although slow to start, this novel soon grips you by the throat and takes you on a madly dysfunctional journey into the lives, loves and potted histories of a very unlikable family. I can’t say I grew to appreciate any of the characters involved, but I adored the writing and the author’s take on how money corrupts everything. I’m just devastated that I’m going to have to wait another two or three years for another book by this fabulous writer.

Great story, great narration
I loved this sooooo much. The characters are so enthralling and I was hooked from the beginning. Taffy’s writing is truly admirable - funny, grotesque, stressful, considered. It’s just great.

Captivating
A sprawling family drama covering generational trauma and wealth. Riveting and captivating from the very first lines.

Loved it
A clever exploration of inter generational trauma and how each individual copes and is affected uniquely

Boring
I didn’t finish this book. It really dragged and I found it quite boring. Interesting, but unlikeable characters.

Great story, brilliantly narrated. What a ride!
Witty, well paced, great cast of characters and well written. Also very very funny. Narrator did a stunning job. I laughed out loud multiple times as I listened. My best read for some time. HIGHLY recommended.

A good start but overly long meaning lost interest
A good start describing the kidnapping but the stories invoking each character in the next generation are overly long and somewhat difficult to follow all of the character names and stories in an audiobook
