Warning! Last book never made into an audiobook!

The seres is not as good as Secrets of the Lost Cities. Still, it's entertaining and somewhat original. But only two of the three books are available as audiobooks, so unless you're willing to read the third book in paper format, don't waste your time!

So inappropriate

My family is a Shannon messenger fan, so I decided to buy this series. I am very disappointed with the fact that she included so much inappropriate material in this book. We decided to stop listening after just a few chapters because, to be honest, it was sickening. Not a single person listening in my family wanted to continue, even though the plot was original and fun. If you put a cockroach into an ice cream sundae, would you want to eat it? We didn’t.

Starts as good as the blurbs claim

Orphans (full and partial). Action. 17ish hormones and angst. Superhero lost King. Evil Other. Urgency (as in first-love and end-of-the-world varieties). Super-articulate commoner Wind-Prince named Vane? Vain? has mere days to learn to soar above Luke Skywalker and Bobby Pendragon. His Yoda is every boys’ dream. Her Luke is: well, she...must...resist...temptation...
Clever twist(er) on ancient themes. Then it all goes wrong, starting with the burger and fries scene. I am compelled to deduct a star for the story from there on.

Clever, fresh and fun.

I predict this is book/series is going to blow up so I urge everyone to get on board early!

The 'air elemental' angle was novel for me and I absolutely adored the lore that fleshed out the book. I found little things like the Southerly winds being tropical and lazy while Northern winds being frigid and demanding really clever.

I also had fun with the 'wind bending' techniques and was completely hooked waiting to see all the training come together in the final battle.

The dual male and female protagonists were very well drawn and I loved their relationship. The interplay was complex, clever, cute and so much better than the usual "he's hot and she's hot so they must get together" paint-by-numbers YA romance. The drama between them was genuine and the climax was sincere.

The story itself was also very strong and it moved purposely, never getting side-tracked or wallowing. It expertly weaved the respective pasts, presents and futures of Audra and Vane together for a tightly layered and well-paced story.

I will definitely check out the next book in the series as soon as it is released. I strongly recommend Let the Sky Fall to everyone into YA especially those looking for a fresh paranormal concept or just a well-written story!

Many Problems (Including Eating Disorders)

I chose this book, despite it having lukewarm reviews, because I REALLY enjoyed reading The Keepers of The Lost Cities series. I read those books with our carpool girls (I am an adult and they are 12 & 13). We all equally love the series and enjoy talking about it in the car.

Well, this series is nothing like the other. It's just terrible. I tried really, really hard to like it because I like the author but it's just terrible. I rarely quit a book midstream, but I have had enough of this one. I made it to chapter 42 before I just couldn't do it anymore.

To the book's credit, the voices on the Audible narration are quite talented and I don't think I would have made it this far without them. They do a great job of interpreting the characters and are lovely to listen to, for the most part; however, the characters (especially the female lead) are just so unlikeable that it's not worth the trouble.

The lead female character is just awful. She lies, she's needy, she's possessive, she's selfish. She has no likeable qualities. The bigger issue I have with how her character doesn't eat. Seeing as this novel is marketed toward the YA audience especially, I would never want my children to listen to this book. The character purposefully denies herself food. She talks in detail about how she hungers but refuses to eat. It is part of the plot - she doesn't eat on purpose to keep her strength as a supernatural being, but the way it is described makes it sound like self harm. If the author wanted to have a character not eat on purpose, why not take away the hunger in general?

Also, this book is over-sexualized. I totally get it. There's a teen boy character. But the way he boils down the female characters to physical traits and the way they describe his fantasies makes this book an inappropriate read for younger readers. Also, it really does feel more like a poorly written romance novel than a YA book.

I just could not get past the wildly boring plot, the over-sexed male character, and the completely unlikeable female character. I wanted to like this book for the author, but I did not. I have returned the 2nd in the series unread because I cannot waste any more time on this series.

Too much sexual innuendo

I was previewing this book for my 12-year-old daughter because others had rave reviews about it but if you are the least bit conservative and concerned about sexual content in your child’s literature this is not the book for you. All of the innuendo is unnecessary and I don’t understand why so many books are including this in young readers literature.

One of my favorite listens this year!!

When I bought this audiobook on Audible, I had no clue what it was about or who the author was. My purchase was based solely on a search of books narrated by Nick Podehl and then narrowed by most fabulous covers (Yes, I judge books by their covers). This was a total WIN for me--I loved it! I am now a Shannon Messenger fan and will be reading everything she's written. I'm from Alabama so I'm used to people making fun of my southern drawl, but when she jokes on the Canadian accent, I laughed so hard driving down the road I thought I was going to have to pull over. I was really impressed with the authenticity of the characters and the originality of the story. I thought her writing style was fresh and age appropriate--it's nice to read something that I can wholeheartedly recommend to my teenage nieces who are constantly looking for something new and exciting to read. I can't wait to read the next installment!!

Honestly? A waste of my Audible credit.

You may like this book but in my opinion is was not good.

The main boy character, Vane is crude and dirty minded bringing in suggestive and horny content. However the story itself is boring and childish so it doesn't come together for any audience demographic.

As for the main girl character Audra, she is so bland and boring. In fact, all the characters have no depth and you never learn to care about any of them. Like at all.

I'm bummed I used a credit on this book.
