Story
You always remember your first love. Don't you? It began with four words. "I love your laugh." But that was 12 years ago. It really began the day Georgina was fired from The Worst Restaurant in Sheffield (TripAdvisor) and found The Worst Boyfriend in the World (Georgina's best friends) in bed with someone else. So when her new boss, Lucas McCarthy, turns out to be the boy who wrote those words to her all that time ago, it feels like the start of something. The only problem? He doesn't seem to remember Georgina at all.

You never forget the one that got away, do you? Nell Mason is extremely happy with her life – or at least that’s what she tells herself. She’s lucky to have a high-powered job as a lawyer, even if it does come with an eccentric set of billionaire divorce clients. And she’s absolutely fine living with her sweet, if slightly dull, boyfriend Gus in their London flat, where they have very sensible sex once (okay, sometimes twice) a week. She’s definitely not stuck in a rut.

Millie is a perfectionist. She's happy, she's successful and, with a great support network of friends and family (and a very grumpy cat), she's never lonely. She loves working at a big tech firm and is on track be promoted to her dream role. The last thing she needs is romance messing up her perfectly organised world. Besides, normal people just don't have romantic relationships. Everyone knows that being in a couple is a bit...well, odd. You know, like having a pet snake or referring to yourself in the third person. Why rely on another person for your own happiness?

Not one of her best
Almost gave up on this but persevered and it gradually improved. Not one of her best though. The fathers dementia storyline for example seemed a bit far fetched and not very credible. Entertaining enough and it passed the time I’ll leave it at that.

Tragically beautiful
This is a really lovely story, but it’s not what you think at all.
It’s so sad to begin with, but it takes you on a real journey. I couldn’t predict what was going to happen from the start like most easygoing chick lit, and even once you can see how it might play out, it still keeps you guessing a bit longer.
4 stars because it took me a while to get into the plot. It wasn’t until around chapter 24 that I finally stopped just plodding through because I felt I should stick with it, and actually began to enjoy listening to it.
I liked the narrator (probably because I’m northern). Plenty of reviews say they found the narration difficult but it didn’t ruin it for me. Dropped a star because occasionally I struggled to work out which character was speaking, and also the way she said ‘yes’ annoyed me a little.
If you stick with it, the end makes up for the sadness and slow start. I think it’s one I’d enjoy much more a second time round.

Nice story if you want a mild story of love
I must say I'm a little disappointed with this book. I really like most of Mhairi McFarlane books so maybe just didn't reach the expectations I had. It's a story that has a mildly interesting story of love if you can hold on the first 16 chapters of 46, in which mainly the main female character drowns and whains a little too much in her depression in not such an introspective way. The love story and turns that develop during the story between her friends and new acquaintances are quite nice and real yet they lack a little of fluidity of the story. I don't know if it's because apart from the part of her friend's loss there really isn't more to the story or the main character. The idea was good though I can't take the impression is quite mild.
