Summary

'Suspenseful, atmospheric and full of twists and turns, I loved the brutal, backstabbing world that Isabelle Schuler conjures up where only the most ruthless can survive' - Jennifer Saint

'Dazzlingly clever and difficult to put down' i

Power. History. Love. Hate. Vengeance.

She will be Queen. Whatever it takes...

Daughter of an ousted king. Descendant of powerful druids. Destined to take her place in history.

As a child, Gruoch’s grandmother prophecies that she will one day be Queen of Alba and reclaim the lands of her Pictish kin. When, many years later, she is betrothed to Duncan, the heir-elect, the prophecy appears to come true. Determined to never to be as powerless as her parents, Gruoch leaves behind her home, her family and her friend MacBethad, and travels to the royal seat at Scone to seal her fate. But when a deadly turn of events forces Gruoch to flee Duncan and the capital, Gruoch finds herself at the mercy of an old enemy. Her hope of becoming Queen all but lost, Gruoch does what she must to survive, until she is given a choice: live a long, peaceful life but fall into obscurity, or seize her chance for vengeance and a path back to the throne.

A sweeping historical epic, Lady MacBethad reimagines the life of Gruoch – the real life Scottish Queen who inspired one of Shakespeare's most famous characters.

English teacher thoughts.

I absolutely love using this book with my GCSE Macbeth class and I am promoting a love of learning through this. I truly hope they continue to read the book.

Gripping!

The narrator is fantastic and really brings to life this great story of the real Lady Macbeth. I particularly loved the first half of the book following her growing up and the detail of the druidic customs of the time.

Women rising to power? Yes please!

Loved the narrator, her voice was just so lovely, though I do feel she could have shouted more when appropriate! I loved the characters & the intrigue, there was so much betrayal & awful behaviour but I suspect that was normal for the time (and perhaps now). Many of the characters were complex & certainly not good or bad, which made it feel more real. I definitely felt Gruoch's pain & constant dilemmas. If she really was like that, she would have made a fantastic Queen.

Fantastic!

Utterly perfect narration and a great story. I’m off to research what was fact and what was fiction, but whatever the case it’s been woven beautifully. What a woman. There were times I stood with her and times I wanted to shake her. I certainly wouldn’t trust her. I’m left with a burning ambivalence, a feeling often bestowed on me by Shakespeare himself.

Good but runs out of steam by the end

Good characters and story but the ending isn’t that satisfying and the endless repetition of ‘her destiny’ is really irritating.

Americans, please leave Scottish history alone

I thought Shakespeare did Gruoch dirty, but he’s got nothing on this author. She’s what we would call in Scotland glaekit, and glaekit women don’t become Queen.

I don’t mind a bit of historical inaccuracy, I mind historical events being moved about by hundreds of years to suit the plot of a book. And if you haven’t visited Scotland, at least look at a map. In the 11th century how did someone get from Fife to Moray and not go through Dunkeld?

Just like Braveheart and Outlander before them, this author think Scottish history is a plaything she can do with as she wishes with no accountability
