Summary

Dr. George K. Simon knows how people push your buttons: your children---especially teens---are experts at it, as is your mate. A coworker may quietly undermine your efforts while professing to be helpful, or your boss may prey on your weaknesses. Manipulative people have two goals: to win and to look good doing it. Too often, those they abuse are only vaguely aware of what is happening to them. In this eye-opening book, you'll discover:

  • four reasons why victims have a hard time leaving abusive relationships
  • power tactics manipulative people use to push their own agendas and justify their behavior
  • ways to redefine the rules of engagement between you and the abuser
  • how to spot potential weaknesses in your character that can set you up for manipulation
  • two tools for personal empowerment to help you maintain greater strength in all relationships

An Incredible and empowering resource in overcoming manipulative relationships.

I stumbled upon this book when recommended in a YouTube video. I have listened to it three times now. The parallels between the case studies in the book and my Experiences in my marriage to an abusive and manipulative wife are striking. Recognising and understanding the nature and patterns of the manipulation I was subjected to is unbelievably helpful to me. Being able to identify the exact methods that my wife employed in each circumstance has been empowering and life changing. Still tied to this person as I am through our children and in the process of divorcing, I have already seen benefits of using the advice given within this book. I know now that I knew all along that my wife was abusing me, yet did not have the confidence to trust my gut feeling. If you are considering this book because you feel you are being manipulated, I can’t recommend it highly enough.

Slow start, slow end, but the middle was fantastic

This book contains an abundance of information that in its entirety is worth the purchase of the book. Things that make you straighten your head and say "oh, my god!".

He:
- Tells you all the different types of abusers
- Tells you a collection of short stories where someone is being taken advantage of
- Walks you through each story, explaining how each person is tricked, and what they could have done differently.

I only subtract stars because unfortunately those moments are frequently buried in waffle. Sometimes there is way too much detail on completely irrelevant points or sidetracks. Considering how interesting some of the things he says are, I found myself zoning out too many times.

But I will be returning to the bookmarks I have marked, because this was truly fascinating.

good content, poor reading

The content is rich and informative, illustrating the dynamics of passive/ covert aggressive personalities, shining a light on an important and overlooked issue. however the reading sounds, in my opinion, so pompous that it is hard to engage with the material. too much affectation- cringe!

basic information but useful

If you're looking for basic information regarding narcissism, it's a very useful book to start with. It's not going to give you an in-depth explanations but will let you get a basic understanding of what it is. There are a couple of useful examples as well.

Very clear and useful. An eye opener to me.

Very clear and useful. An eye opener. Even though I have a grasp on psychology, this book made so much sense and is so simple. Advanced take on how to see the abusers.
