About this listen

From the best-selling author of the Supervillainy saga

Jane Doe is a weredeer, the least-threatening shapechanger species in the world. Blessed with the ability to turn furry at will and psychically read objects, Jane has done her best to live a normal life working as a waitress at the Deerlightful Diner. She has big dreams of escaping life in the supernatural-filled town of Bright Falls, Michigan, and her 18th birthday promises the beginning of her teenage dreams coming true.

Unfortunately, her birthday is ruined by the sudden murder of her best friend's sister in an apparent occult killing. Oh, and her brother is the primary suspect. Allying with an eccentric FBI agent, the local crime lord, and a snarky werecrow, Jane has her work cut out for her in turning her big day around.

Thankfully, she's game.

Set in the same world as Straight Outta Fangton.

A good story well told.

I liked this story. The world building - deer shamans, the spirits, and Alex, is great and the narration was excellent.

A pacy ‘reversed’ Supernatural.

Another trilogy and well produced series from the CT Phipps (and co) machine and I found Jane entertaining in her cameo in the recent Supervilliany audiobook.

I liked the reverse Supernatural twist that had an interesting vibe through the book. I also enjoyed the amateur detective sub-plot with the Dresdenesque peacekeeping storyline.

Unlike Jacob/Cassius/Gary I don’t think the character resonated with me in this story. The pop culture references worked, there’s a neat anti-climax and character development from naive teenager (to a point) but I didn’t feel the same amusement and emotional attachment. Perhaps influenced by other reads, but it could have gone a bit darker with what was available on the table.

U found it a good, solid start to the series, but for me a grittier story and beefier support cast would have elevated it a notch but that may depend on the market as it’s pretty teenager friendly.

Fun UF story!

This was a fun YA UF comedy that had the feel of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Veronica Mars about it. The world was fun and packed with some cool magic. There was plenty of humour and a bit of action and mystery. Some parts of the story were weirdly dark despite the light overall tone!

Jane and the rest of the characters proved a likeable and interesting bunch so it was easy to get sucked into the story as she used her powers to try and clear her brother of murder charges.

I'd have rated this even higher but I felt like the second half of the story was just not quite as strong as the first half.

I felt like Arielle DeLisle did a decent job with the audio. She has a good voice and seemed to get the tone of the story and the timing of her comedic delivery right most of the time. The one flaw was that a few of her secondary character voices could have been better. Still, on the whole I did like her performance.

A FUN and yet occassionally, DARK URBAN FANTASY

Perhaps, best classified as an Urban Fantasy, for Young Adults, with elements of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Veronica Mars, set in a place like Twin Peaks, crossed with Bon Temps, Louisiana, from True Blood.

If you're looking for an urban-fantasy, mystery-thriller, served up with a healthy dose of witty banter, wisecracks, sarcasm, snark and punny puns, then look no further...

Another different genre for CT Phipps

So far I’ve read about superheros & villains, techno thriller, UF thriller and now, with Brightfalls, a UF murder mystery. I really did like it. The premise that the MC is a weredeer is fun and while the story feels light, there are some dark undercurrents.

I didn’t like the way the story flirted into the realms of PNR and would have been disappointed if it got expanded on. Fortunately for me it didn’t but it was enough to knock the rating to 4 stars.

The plot moves along with some nice revelations along the way. I’ll definitely be recommending it.

The narrator also does a good job. The characters were consistent through the story.
