Summary

The charming yet clueless professor.

Dr. Vail Mifflin loves the history of organized crime. Teaching and writing about the adventures of mobsters are his life’s work. To Vail, the stories he tells are just that - fun accounts he doesn’t think of as real. When Dr. Mifflin gets too close to the modern-day mob truth while researching a book he’s writing, his life begins to fall apart.

The Irish mob killers.

Rowen, Cillian, Aspen, and Fallon work for the Killough Company, the Irish mob that controls the Eastern Seaboard of the US. They go to one of Dr. Mifflin’s lectures to hear a few stories about the old-timers. That day, the men save Dr. Mifflin from an Italian mafioso, who didn’t like the things Dr. Mifflin lectured about. With this one unintended kind act, these killers become entangled in Vail’s life.

Death and danger in unexpected places.

As the band of killers get to know Vail, they realize that instead of focusing on the history of the mob, he’s trying to write an up-to-date account. Normally they would murder a man who planned to divulge their secrets, but it’s clear Vail doesn’t truly understand the danger he’s in. Their only choice to keep him alive is to protect him and convince him to stop. Vail struggles with ADHD and is reluctant to let go of his career, the one thing he feels he is good at. Unfortunately word is already out that Vail knows things he shouldn’t, and keeping him safe won’t be simple.

How Did You Survive Without Us? ends on a small cliff-hanger for Vail, but the next book is already written, so you won’t have to wait to find out what happens next!

Very good book

First time author and narrator, loved the story and characters. The narration was very good. I love this genre so I was disappointed. Look forward to the next book.

The awful Irish accents ruined this

I didn't finish this audiobook, but I will get the ebook. The narration was so patchy that it became intolerable to keep listening. The American accents were great, and Mac Rae is a good narrator, but he needs to know his limits. He's delusional if he believes the Irish accents he used here were acceptable. The boys are from Dundalk which means that they have a particular accent. American narrators have a really bad track record of doing 'lucky stars' Irish accents in audiobooks. Its brutal to listen to. I'd have been grateful for that here as it would have been an improvement. The attempted Irish accents here were a mishmash of English brogue with garbled Scots inflections and the occasional Irish inflection. It was as close to Irish as a Boston accent is to Cockney. I know most Americans wouldn't know the difference , but Europeans will cringe like i did. What a shame.

Well written awesomeness

I admit I wasn’t sure if I would like gangsta style but the characters along with the epic narrator changed my mind. So well done.

Absent minded professor and sexy Irish mobsters

The pace in this book is unrelenting and doesn't let up.
Vail is such a wonderfully complex character.
He's a touch of the absent minded professor.
He's extremely intelligent, witty, sweet but absolutely clueless in the most basic sense.
This is where he gets himself in trouble because he just can't comprehend that his passion is bringing trouble straight to his door.
He literally needs a keeper to look out for him and protect him not only frim outside forces but from his own worst enemy, himself.
Thankfully he's got a couple of strong and sexy Irish mobsters by the name of Rowan and Cillian.
The chemistry between the three of them was explosive from the start.
When you add in the fact that Fallon and Aspen have also expressed interest as well and this becomes just about one of the sexiest books I've ever listened to.
Mac Rae did an amazing job narrating.
He very effortlessly distinguished between a cast of multiple characters
in a clear, concise way that kept me from becoming confused and the Irish accents were absolutely swoon worthy.

Absolutely beautifully done!

Mac Rae is a brand new to me narrator and holy buckets did he knock it out of the park! His accents are absolutely perfect- his Irish is astounding. This is a favorite series and Mac has brought the authors’ vision to life! If I could give it more than 5 stars I definitely would!

Great book, wonderful narration!

There’s everything to love about this book! Four Irish mobsters in NYC, they stumble upon Doctor Vail Mifflin, a ADHD lecturer at the university who specializes in the history of mobs.
Sparks fly immediately and soon Vail gets involved with Rowen and Cillian, though Fallon and Aspen, watching from the side lines, have clearly expressed their interest, too.
The book is hot as sin, the narration wonderful with a swoony Irish accent and the book is absolutely enjoyable!
It ends with a bit of a cliffhanger, but I’m not too upset about it, as book 2 is already out and I’m already onto it!

What a ride!

This book is hot as sin, and there’s plenty of both hotness and sin of several kinds. The action starts pretty much right away and we also get to know the MCs, especially Vail, Rowen, and Cillian, fairly well right from the start. I especially loved Vail, he’s such a mix of innocence, intelligence, cluelessness, and wantonness in one cute package. He, Rowen, and Cillian were perfect together.

Mac Rae is a new-to-me narrator and he was perfect for this book! His accents are yummy and he manages to give them are clear and discernible voices.

Irish mobsters and a neurodivergent professor

Dr. Vail Mifflin what a well-written character, and I loved how life was not just happy. He has issues and had to deal with a lot. But there is also humour and maybe a touch of sex... OK, a lot.

Irish mafia, the characters and accents were well rounded and seriously good.

Overall, a great story that was only made better by being in audible, but you need book two as well, or else you are left hanging at the end. But please read book two as well, even better.

A new to me narrator Mac Rae has excellent accents and is a pleasure to listen to, clean and concise. I speed this narration up to 1.25 on Audible, which is usual for me.
