Summary

What was it like? Living in that house.

Maggie Holt is used to such questions. Twenty-five years ago, she and her parents, Ewan and Jess, moved into a rambling Victorian estate called Baneberry Hall. They spent three weeks there before fleeing in the dead of night, an ordeal Ewan later recounted in a memoir called House of Horrors. His tale of ghostly happenings and encounters with malevolent spirits became a worldwide phenomenon.

Now, Maggie has inherited Baneberry Hall after her father's death. She was too young to remember any of the events mentioned in her father's book. But she doesn't believe a word of it. Ghosts, after all, don't exist.

But when she returns to Baneberry Hall to prepare it for sale, her homecoming is anything but warm. People from the pages of her father's book lurk in the shadows, and locals aren't thrilled that their small town has been made infamous. Even more unnerving is Baneberry Hall itself - a place that hints of dark deeds and unexplained happenings.

As the days pass, Maggie begins to believe that what her father wrote was more fact than fiction. That either way, someone - or something - doesn't want her here. And that she might be in danger all over again....

Critic reviews

"Clever, twisty, and altogether spine-chilling.... [A] deliciously terrifying story.... You'll want to read this one after dark, ideally with the wind whistling in the eaves and a window banging somewhere just out of reach. But keep the light switch handy. You just might need it." (Ruth Ware, Book of the Month)

Interesting twist

A semi-creepy book that took a little while to get into, but, once it got going, the story was quite intriguing. The main character’s pigheadedness was not too much, considering the circumstances, and she herself was not, as many women tend to be in this kind of book, flimsy and somewhat annoying.

I didn’t see the twist coming and was quite shocked to hear the story unfold - an unexpected (and bewildering) pleasure.

Gripping and gave me nightmares for real!

The characters are great and I love that two narrators are used to help understand the characters. I was so into the book that I actually had nightmares about the record player but I'll say no more.
Really chilling!

Disenchanting....

I must make it clear that I did throughly enjoy this novel - however, I would define it more as a thriller.

In my opinion, the most chilling part of the book was when the child psychologist suggested leaving an unsupervised child in a waiting room eating a lolly!

All in all it was a pleasant read, as was the narration. I would certainly read other novel’s written by Riley Sager.

Great characters, tense and spooky!

Books like this usually have two pitfalls: bland characters or bad/predictable endings. This book has neither.
There is a fairly large cast of characters and none of them feel like featureless pillars to advance the plot; they are all real, nuanced and intriguing. The split between perspective of Maggie and 'House of Horrors' was brilliant and made it really unique.
This is my first book my Riley Sager and I will definitely be reading more!

Okay for the YA audience maybe?

There was a decent enough story here. The way it was written and delivered was, at times, unintentionally hilarious though. It often strayed into Garth Marenghi pulp parody territory, At other times it reminded me of the performances in the 1981 film, Mommy Dearest. Maybe I'm too old and this is perfectly fine for a younger adult reader. It's a bit like a Netflix Show that has promise but has had a cliché re-write to appeal to current trends. The main character is a bit annoying with a me-me-me, life is unfair, I've had it hard even though I have no flaws, successfully self employed, always been well off and just inherited $400,000 and a huge estate. Poor me, I deserve more and demand to know everything and don't expect me to be polite about it either. A thoroughly modern character! yay!
