About this listen
A classic Poirot mystery read by Hugh Fraser.
An outbreak of kleptomania at a student hostel was not normally the sort of crime that aroused Hercule Poirot’s interest. But when he saw the list of stolen and vandalized items – including a stethoscope, some old flannel trousers, a box of chocolates, a slashed rucksack and a diamond ring found in a bowl of soup – he congratulated the warden, Mrs Hubbard, on a ‘unique and beautiful problem’.
The list made absolutely no sense at all. But, reasoned Poirot, if this was merely a petty thief at work, why was everyone at the hostel so frightened?

Brilliant
Fantastic to hear Hugh Frasser reading another classic Agatha Christie. Different from ITV version and so interesting to see the changes made in that adaptation.

Buy one Miss Lemon, get one free!
From 1955 post-war Britain, this book is set in a diverse student household. It's an amazing insight into what a newly multi racial Britain was really like. Christie has always picked up on the more subtle aspects of human behaviour, and this is no exception. Its also interesting to see how jobs, like Miss Lemons sister's, have disappeared too.
Hugh Fraser's narration is as excellent as ever.

Good
Good but not my fav Poirot, didn't love the characters and I missed the high society settings etc. Was still good and worth the listen.

Good story - high body count for a Christie
As usual, great narration by Hugh Fraser. Poirot in his later years, a nice little plot with plenty of twists.

Great Adaptation
Hugh Fraser (Captain Hastings opposite David Suchet in Poirot) is fantastic at reading this story. His voice brings the storyline to life. Brilliant narration & an excellent story from Agatha Christie.

Lacks the characteristic Christie zing.
Any additional comments?
Agatha Christie was always an excellent writer and this book is good a story, and it is well read by "Captain Hastings", although his French-Belgian accent could be improved. However for me as a long standing Christie fan, these more recent books are definitely not as good as those set in earlier periods. I would think that as she got older and times and morés changed, Christie was less in touch with the era, and her characters and story don't have quite the same power as those set in the pre war period.

Doesn't miss a beat
Don't be fooled by the apparently quiet start, this has the usual Agatha Christie hallmarks, and before you know it you'll be hooked - by mis-direction, multiple layers of deceit, and plot twists that don't insult the reader's intelligence. Her characters are real people and few are what they first seem to be. And I really like that Christie also exposes the stupidity and futility of human vanity, greed and mis-judgement - including gender, racial and class prejudice - making them central to the menace and cruelty in which this story is wreathed.

Not her best story but still enjoyable
A bit of a strange and unlikely story but still enjoyable; well read, as always, by the marvellous Hugh Fraser.
