Summary

Something vital is missing from David Hero's comfortable, ordinary existence. One day is much like the next, simple, predictable...boring.

But the nights! Each night David Hero finds himself transported to a marvelous world where brave men and women battle terrible creatures possessed of cruel, dark powers.

Despite his fears, the Dreamworlds tempt David, drawing him farther and farther from the waking world. Here he finds noble warriors; beautiful, loving women; and challenges almost greater than he can imagine.

It was ok

Honestly, if I had known this was more like The Never-ending Story or The Wizard of Oz, and less like Lovecraft’s Dream Cycle or Cthulhu Mythos I probably would have rated it much higher. I plan on reading the others in the series and feel that they will get higher reviews from me. They are interesting and inventive but not like Lumley’s usual fare. Except for some weird descriptive events based around the colony of termite men, I would almost consider this try by Lumley at YA. This is much more based on fantasy, all the way to the narrator’s voice. He has a whimsical tone to go with the whimsical story. Not bad by any means, and I did finish. I was simply expecting something far different.

Hero of Dreams

Quite an old-fashioned dream based, YA book.

I was given this book for free of my own choosing and I voluntarily left this review.

The Dreamlands

In the interest of full disclosure, I was given this audiobook on a promotional basis and asked (but not required) to leave an honest review in exchange.

Dreamlands is an interesting take on Lovecraft’s dream cycle. I’m a big fan of Brian Lumley’s Necroscope series, but this book seems geared toward a younger audience. The preview on Audible is a fairly accurate representation of what you can expect from the story. And the narrator does good work. So the best advice I can give is to listen to the sample to make your decision.

Fun, Old-school Fantasy with a Twist

Hero in Dreams is certainly not one of Brian Lumley's best books, but, as typical of the great man's work, it's well-written, fast-paced and never dull.
It's essentially an old fashioned sword and sorcery tale with the twist that both main protagonists are dreaming the events.
Jonathan Trueman does a fine job with the narration. He has a very traditional style and differentiates the characters well.
Another quality presentation from the fine folks at Crossroad Press.
Recommended.
