Summary

The first novel of the Kilo-Five Trilogy by number-one New York Times best-selling author Karen Traviss - part of the expanded universe based on the award-winning video game series Halo!

It's 2553. The theocratic military alliance known as the Covenant has collapsed after a long, brutal war with humanity that saw billions slaughtered on Earth and its colonies. For the first time in 30 years, however, peace finally seems possible. But though the fighting has stopped, the war is far from over: It’s just gone underground. The United Nations Space Command’s feared and secretive Office of Naval Intelligence recruits Kilo-Five - a clandestine team of Orbital Drop Shock Troopers, a Spartan supersoldier, and a diabolical AI - to accelerate the insurrection within the Covenant’s warrior species, the Sangheili, even as their notable defector turned leader, Thel ‘Vadam - the Arbiter - struggles to stave off civil war among his divided people.

Across the galaxy, a woman thought to have died in the Covenant attack on the planet Reach is actually very much alive. Chief scientist Dr. Catherine Halsey broke every law in the book to create the Spartan program, and now, she’s broken some more rules to save them. Marooned with Senior Chief Petty Officer Franklin Mendez and a Spartan team in a Forerunner slipspace bubble hidden in the destroyed planet Onyx, Halsey finds that this place has been guarding an ancient secret - a treasure trove of Forerunner technology that will change everything for the UNSC and mankind. As Kilo-Five joins the hunt for Halsey, humanity’s violent past begins to catch up with all of them as the disgruntled colony Venezia has been biding its time to strike at Earth...and its most dangerous terrorist has an old, painful link with both Halsey and Kilo-Five that will test everyone’s loyalty to the limit.

Amazing book shoddy audio.

Great read. Awful audio. Only comes out of the left speaker. Tried to listen more but only lasted 5mins.

Reader saves what could have been a dull book.

Good book for those who dislike Halsey; I do so it was painful. Incredible narrator.

Great listen, takes a bit getting used to

It took a while for the Narator to get into. At the start it was difficult to tell what was spoken dioligue and what was thought as the Narators voices blended. However, he soon got into and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Great story, moat if the time.

While I really enjoyed the segments of the book focused on the ONI team, or Jul on Sanghelios, the sections meant to be a follow-up to 'Ghosts of Onyx' felt very underwhelming and the events that happen to one character in particular are downright baffling and almost defy her entire character from her previous appearance.

Kilo Five

It's quite slow, but it's alright. There's some new characters and some added tension with the whole Halsey arc.

An amazing halo spy novel!

Amazing, a halo spy novel and a very different pace than normal! Lots of interesting facts and lore and a nice link back to Onyx! Great voice acting, and a brilliant performance. A very big happy suprise!

More in-depth than expected

Very well written between the different view points of the multiple characters and themes, we get a different look at the Elites and the intricacies of the Spartan Program. all wrapped up neatly in a different type of story than we normally get for the universe.

Credit to the narrator for giving his best for a wide range of accents and species, being able to create a voice for a character not just an accent change.

Completely Unexpected

I now see halo in a very different light. The Kilo five series is way better than it has any right to be considering it came from a game about shooting aliens. I loved the games but the master chief is a one dimensional plank of a character in comparison. If only the TV show had adapted this series it might have been interesting.

Best trilogy of the halo books

Grasslands is a great introduction to Kilo 5 and the full trilogy is the best out of all the halo books in my opinion. Karen Travis is a sensational author and I hope she makes more Kilo 5 books soon!
