Summary
The first novel of the Kilo-Five Trilogy by number-one New York Times best-selling author Karen Traviss - part of the expanded universe based on the award-winning video game series Halo!
It's 2553. The theocratic military alliance known as the Covenant has collapsed after a long, brutal war with humanity that saw billions slaughtered on Earth and its colonies. For the first time in 30 years, however, peace finally seems possible. But though the fighting has stopped, the war is far from over: It’s just gone underground. The United Nations Space Command’s feared and secretive Office of Naval Intelligence recruits Kilo-Five - a clandestine team of Orbital Drop Shock Troopers, a Spartan supersoldier, and a diabolical AI - to accelerate the insurrection within the Covenant’s warrior species, the Sangheili, even as their notable defector turned leader, Thel ‘Vadam - the Arbiter - struggles to stave off civil war among his divided people.
Across the galaxy, a woman thought to have died in the Covenant attack on the planet Reach is actually very much alive. Chief scientist Dr. Catherine Halsey broke every law in the book to create the Spartan program, and now, she’s broken some more rules to save them. Marooned with Senior Chief Petty Officer Franklin Mendez and a Spartan team in a Forerunner slipspace bubble hidden in the destroyed planet Onyx, Halsey finds that this place has been guarding an ancient secret - a treasure trove of Forerunner technology that will change everything for the UNSC and mankind. As Kilo-Five joins the hunt for Halsey, humanity’s violent past begins to catch up with all of them as the disgruntled colony Venezia has been biding its time to strike at Earth...and its most dangerous terrorist has an old, painful link with both Halsey and Kilo-Five that will test everyone’s loyalty to the limit.

how do you ruin a good story? get this narrator
story was just fine. I have read it on my own before.
get a narrator with a speech impediment that lacks emotion in voice and you have a recipe for disaster.

2/5 overall, 1/5 performance.
I felt like Euan Morton’s voice made it hard for me to differentiate between a character just being dull & unexciting or having any other human emotion. I often found myself wondering when dialog between characters stopped & normal storytelling started. Seems as though he had just been reading the story to himself as monotone as possible and Audible just said, “Sure, that’ll do”. Far stretch from The Fall of Reach & The Flood where characters had some emotion to them & the voice actor seemed to care that he was reading aloud to an audience. It’s a shame because you can tell Karen Traviss wants to tell a gripping story or espionage, civil war, & Elite strife but the delivery falls flat on its face. Would not recommend this book via audio, buy it & bring your own characters to life.

Blew Expectations Away
Giving 4 stars because writer didn't make clear who was speaking sometimes. It was also slow at some parts but I didn't personally mind because the story was interesting. Excited to see where the next 2 books in the Kilo-Five-Trilogy take me as I've grown to enjoy the characters and their motivations while expanding upon the lore of Halo post-Covenant war. Narrator did a great job for what was given to him. Once you knew his voices for certain characters, it was easier to follow who was saying what as the author didn't specify sometimes. Definitely worth the 15 hour investment which I wasn't certain at first I'd be able to get through.

AWFUL NARRATOR
I wanted to listen to this trilogy, I really tried my best to put up with this narrator, but I can’t stand it. I’ve listened to every other halo novel audiobook and could understand all those narrators, but this one is awful.
First, and I mean no disrespect, but the guy speaks like he has a partial slur to his words. You know when you crunch on ive that came in your drink and your mouth kinda poofs up, that’s what he sounds like he’s talking with.
Second, no distinction when switching between dialogue lines of different characters. In the first chapter he reads three different peoples’ dialogue with the same tone and no distinct change of voice so you don’t know what character is actually talking unless he says “Jack/John/Kelly said” at the end of the line.
Third, as someone who lived in Australia for several years, this narrators fake Australian accent he uses for Aussie characters is so grotesquely painful to listen to.
Fourth, he makes little/no effort in emphasizes certain lines and comes across as quite monotone. His narration makes it very hard to immerse myself in the story when I am always struggling to find out who’s line he is reading or why he is mispronouncing basic halo lore aspects but yet is tryharding to pronounce the locations each chapter takes place in.
I have ADD and struggle to read books so I use audible, but for these three books narrated by him, I am forced to buy the physical book so that I can actually enjoy the story.

Probably better than the Nylund series.
After reading some of the reviews regarding the book I wanted to make sure to take a different approach when listening to this. Everyone in the review section was so concerned and angry that this author tore down the image of Halsey. I find that this might have been needed due to the superhero Esque approach that the other books have created. I will be honest I have only heard the Nylund books and followed the sequence from Reach to Ghosts of Onyx. After Onyx, I needed to immediately find out what happened to the crew in the Dyson Sphere.
As the book explains, Halsey needs to be "brought to justice" for what happened. However, I will agree that all of a sudden Mendez being sharper than Halsey was a weird twist but it was fine overall. The only slow points were the points with the Sangheili. I appreciate the alternative views and connections between the characters and the universe. They completely slowed the story down and at one point I believe the author even forgets about them for a few chapters.
Overall the connection and relationships between Kilo-Five is fantastic and a great example of character building. While I haven't played Halo 4, from where I am in the story in the Thursday War. I can see where this is leading to Halo 4 and beyond.
The narrator takes some adjusting but after the initial break-in period, you forget and just get sucked in. The differences between characters is noticeable and great. It improves even more in the Thursday War book.

Overall good but the narrator wasn't great
If you ever wondered what it would be like if Mackarov from call of duty decided to do audiobooks instead terrorism now you know. That being said once you get used to it then it's not so bad. The story is very good though and gives a good overview of the post war activities. Even if you can't stand the narrator it's worth it for the lore and story.
