Story
Over the hill, all outta ducks to give, and suddenly life is looking up...even if you're living with a ghost and fighting off werewolves. Moving back to Savannah changed my life in all the best ways. Color me surprised, when a new job lands in my lap watching over a fairy ring. Worth ten times what I’d make anywhere else, it seems too good to be true. I take it anyway. And that’s when things get weird. Nothing in Savannah is what it seems, and the magic and undercurrents of this city are pulling me onto a dangerous path.

Story
“My name is Rylee, and I am a Tracker.” When children go missing, and the humans have no leads, I’m the one they call. I am their last hope in bringing home the lost ones. I salvage what they cannot. I’m on the FBI’s wanted list. I have a werewolf for a pet and a witch of a best friend and have no need for anyone else in my life. But when a hunt for a missing child starts to spin out of control, help comes from a most unexpected direction. One who is dangerously dark, brooding, and doesn’t know a thing about the supernatural. One whose kisses set me on fire.

The Witch's Reign...a land of unnatural hellish cold ruled over by the Ice Witch herself, who is in turn guarded by three creatures - Wolf, Bear, and Raven. Those lovely beasts derive their power directly from their mistress and just happen to kill any who cross their paths. To get there, you first must pass through the Dragon's Ground. Full of, you guessed it, dragons who for the record, also do not like trespassers. Sounds like a fun place to go, doesn't it? Yeah, not so much.

Story
I knew the sins of my past would call to collect what was left of my soul. If I'd known the price I'd pay, I would've sacrificed more to stay hidden from the magic. In the middle of Wyoming - away from the abnormals of the world - I thought I was free and clear. I started a new life. Found a love I'd never known in a husband, and a son who was my everything. And in a blinding instant, that life was stolen from me.

I had no idea how those words would change my life. Or how they’d changed my life already...until the day the most dangerous man I’ve ever met waltzed onto my farm and left us a death sentence. In an invitation. My younger brother has been chosen for the prestigious, secret magical school hidden within the folds of our mundane world. A place so dangerous, they don’t guarantee you’ll make it out alive. If he doesn't go, our entire family will be killed. It’s the same invitation my older brother received three years ago - the same place where he mysteriously died.

"My name is Larkspur, and I am an Elemental." My people use the power of the earth to sustain life and defy our enemies. I should be at my father's side as a royal princess. But as a half-breed, bastard child, that isn't going to happen. I've been accused of attacking the queen, my wicked stepmother, and my life is suddenly on the line. "Happily Ever After" wasn't supposed to come with a do-over option. But when my husband of 20 years packs up and heads for greener pastures, and my son heads away to college, that's exactly what my midlife becomes. A do-over. This time, though, I plan to do things differently. Age is just a number, after all, and at 40 I'm ready to carve my own path. Eager for a fresh start, I make a somewhat unorthodox decision and move to a tiny town in the Sierra foothills.

Robin Brannon was a normal wife, mom, and antique shop owner until a brush with death turned her day-to-day life upside down. Now, she and her two best friends are seeing things that belong in a fantasy novel. Ghosts. Visions. Omens of doom. Nothing that belongs in the peaceful mountain town they call home. Added to that, Robin's marriage is on the rocks, her grandmother's health is failing, her mother is driving away the customers at her shop, her teenage daughter refuses to get her driver's license, and her left knee aches every darn morning.

The day after my 43rd birthday, my husband announced he was trading me in - his words, not mine. The news was unwelcome at the time, but honestly? I needed a good goosing to get up and find my way to the door. So I was freed from the giant manual of expectations authored by my ex. That was the good news. The flip side was less happy. Due to living in a state not friendly to discarded wives, I was also relieved of the financial "security" I'd spent a lifetime accruing.

Thirty-nine was a fantastic year. I was married to the man I loved. I had a body that worked without creaking. My grandma, who raised me, was still healthy, and life was pretty damned good. But as they say, all good things come to an end. One year later, I’m a widow. My joints are starting to ache. Gram is in the nursing home, and dead people think my home is some kind of supernatural bed-and-breakfast. Gluing body parts onto semi-transparent people has become a side job - deceased people I’m not even sure are actually there.

It was a day like any other day for Marina Trahan...until she caught her husband in bed with another woman. Before that eye-opening wake-up call, Marina would have described her life as average or uneventful, maybe even boring. But now, chaos and confusion reign supreme. She’d expected to slide through midlife with her unwanted extra pounds, chin hair, and hot flashes and move somewhat gracefully into elastic-waist pants and having no verbal filter.

Wrong side of forty
- By Cryptic Fairy on 18-05-20
Summary
Listed number one in women's fantasy fiction in Kindle.
One day, I’m married, living in Seattle, and magic isn’t real. The next, I’m divorced and living in the guest room of my ex’s hotter-than-sin cousin’s place in Savannah and talking to an animated skeleton named Robert.
I have to admit, Robert isn’t my worst date. At 41, I didn’t think I’d be starting over. But I’ll be damned if my ex thinks I’m down and out because he pulled a fast one on me.
When a job comes my way that offers me a chance to use my childhood training in the shadow world, I take it. I need the money more than I care about my sanity.
It’s dangerous. I have to embrace the magic and dark of my past. And I need Advil to keep me going.
But those who’d hold me back better sit up and take notice because a new woman is in town, and she’s not about to be counted out by anyone. Even if she does groan when she rolls out of bed in the morning.
A paranormal women's fiction with a bit of class and a lot of sass for anyone who feels like age is just a number!

Silly and flippant
The heroine thinks with her sex glands, and is rather stupid. Making such a fuss about her being old at 41 is also an irritating thing that sets teeth on edge. Especially since she behaves like a teenager. Poor characters.
All rather juvenile and so I abandoned it about halfway through after really trying to stay with it.

This book is fantastic and read fantastically too!
The story is classic urban fantasy with the surprisingly unusual twist of having a middle-aged female protagonist that kicks butt! (not sure why there are not more books with this considering how well it works)

Enjoyable fantasy adventure.
Full of engaging characters, mythical creatures and mysteries. Some of the twists at the end seem a little TOO convenient and I’m not entirely sure they marry with earlier events but I liked the story anyway. I agree with another reviewer - this heroine has a rather strange relationship with her age. I understand it’s partially due to the damage of an abusive marriage but still seems extreme e.g. when referencing her ability to drive - she’s 41 not 81! The narration is good and the story is fun - looking forward to the next book

Slow start gets much better
Breena has a chip on her shoulder about her age her ex about her life but half way through it suddenly comes into its own I think the
Thing that annoys me about Breena
Is her winging about her OLD age all the time. Heck she is 41. I’m 51 so this is annoying to say the least. But as I say it turns a corner and gets better half way. Some of what Breena is chaufing on about I totally relate to at 51 but heck at 41 I never thought I was past it like she does!

Great new adult series!
Love this story! Entertaining story with a 40+ year old heroine. Funny and interesting scenes. The characters are hard but likable, even the edgy men. Lauren Fortgang did a wonderful job bring this story to life and by providing unique voices and appropriate tone inflections for each scene! I won a copy of this audiobook in a giveaway and am leaving this voluntary review.

Would've rated higher, but...
...the author doesn't seem to like her heroine very much. I mean, between the near constant old lady jokes and fat lady jokes it was pretty disappointing. Spending and entire book fat shaming your own character (that doesn't even seem like she's very fat at all) is pretty damn low. And oh my frickin' god the "old" comments and jokes...lady, 41 isn't old at all!! This isn't 17th century Russia for god's sake!!! It's barely even sticking your toe into "middle age" these days!
It's this type of commentary in media that perpetuates the idea that women who are over the age of 25 and over the weight of 120lbs are obsolete and are of no value! I'm very disgusted and disappointed by Ms. Mayer's idea of entertainment! You're in for a rude awakening all too soon when you hit your 40s, lady!

So Much Better than I Expected
I know the reviews were very good, but I trust reviews less and less these day. I was so glad I was wrong. This is a fun book, and look forward to the next book.
I love all the different characters, especially Fish and Robert, and I really like how Bree interacted with them.
My only problem was the "himself" used entirely too often and the "old at 41" was tiresome after the first couple of chapters. It is a privilege to age to 41, not a curse.
Lauren Fortgang did an Excellent job!

Great Story
Overall review - Very well written with a good story line. There are a lot of concepts introduced that are explained enough to get through this book, but you can tell they will be dealt with in more detail in subsequent releases. I truly enjoyed the story. A good plot but with a light storytelling that's not too light. I also like that the story was written in first person. Seems to make the story more realistic and interesting.
Cons - The constant reminders of the main character being in her 40's, references to her libido, and her being a woman DO get a little annoying. I got the point, but I think it was driven a LITTLE hard. The ending wasn't as nicely developed as I would have liked (some more explanation on the end would have been nice; you are expected to just accept some things). But aside from those quirks, great story.
Narrator - THE NARRATOR IS AWESOME! I truly love the way she reads this story!!! I am very pleased with her narration and voices.

Geriatric 40 Yr Old
The start wasn't too bad. However, I had to return the book. The character sounds like a 60year old, instead of a 40 year old. It's like they combined misc story bits from other book. And not in a good way...yuck!

fun with reservations
Bree O'Rylee is 41 year old, so she is not your typical young, kick-ass heroine of UF novels. She gets aches and pains, as well as gets out of breath when running, sometimes for her life. She is a likable character, but has a predilection for harping on about her age; as does everyone else, all while catching the fancy of multiple men. She has been out of circulation possibly forever and her libido seems to have run amok, which she oddly attributes to hormones. There are also constant references to her ex-husband, referred to as 'himself', which does get old, but it is perfectly within character for someone to go on about someone who has betrayed them and is attempting to financialy ruin them on top of it. The characters are fun, but still mostly underdeveloped. The plot introduces a new supernatural world and some of the myriad of 'creatures' that inhabit it. It is mostly introductory and leaves enough loose ends to continue the series. It moves at a smooth, leisurely pace,

No spoilers
I loved this book. Mayer creates characters and worlds that keep you wanting more. Lot's of action some suspense and romance budding. I can't wait to find out more of the shadow world and what is in there. Looking forward to the next book in the series. Fortgang was the narrator and very pleased to say she is one of if not the best narrator out there today. The voices and reading of this story is top notch so don't hesitate spend the money or credit you won't be sorry.

She ain’t ducking around!
I love getting something new from Shannon. The anticipation of who is this person, what are they going to get into... what’s happening now, is a lot to look forward to. I can say, though the main character made me want to smack her a few times, I loved it. It’s different yet has the perfect Shannon flair to it.
Being 41 and having to get a new job is hard, no matter who you are. Old dogs and new tricks and all but for Bree o’Riley, she made it work. It was also a rude awakening for her. She was surrounded by men, who all thought they’d see her fail. Though some worries the old gal would get herself hurt. They weren’t wrong about the aches, it was a daily thing to have to pop an Advil... or three. (Something I do daily at age 40... lol)
It was hard, painful even but she did it. She trained. She practiced and she put her determination into everything she did. No one thought the old gal had it in her. She ducking proved them wrong. She made it to age where she had no ducks to give and let those younger jerks and the “trainers” for her new job lick her shoes. If not for her then no one would have been able to stop what was happening.
Her only friend in the beginning was a skeleton named Robert who became her friend. She made enemies and friends pretty quickly. Depending on her mood and temperament... she really had no ducks to give so it was a teatime to her ability to look, think and then act that kept her from getting completely creamed more than once. However... she put herself in the middle of something that could have gotten her killed... something I bet we will see more of later on. I can’t wait for more!

Good listen, but why make 41 see like 65...
I enjoyed this listen and we'll listen to the rest of the books in the series. The story is fun and well written. My only real criticism is that the main female character is supposed to be 41 and yet she acts like she's a senior citizen. The idea that she is old is then perpetuated throughout by the other characters. It is a little annoying and feels a bit like the perspective of a ten-year-old who thinks anyone over the age of 16 is old. If you turn off your brain and every time the character talks about being 41 you pretend she says that she is 59 the book works really well and is quite enjoyable.

Loved it!
A great new series by Shannon Mayer! Lauren Fortgang did an awesome narration. I loved that I was able to relate to Bree on so many levels. There is a lot of laughter while trying to figure out who is on which side. Can't wait for the next one!
