Summary

The Booktok hit: The Plated Prisoner series continues in audiobook four. This dark adult fantasy romance is inspired by the myth of King Midas and the gold-touched woman who realizes her true worth.

"I was nothing but a road to Midas. A means to get to where he wanted to go, and I paved that path in gold."

My life has been made up of gilded lies. But death has been shaped from rot.

Like a phoenix caught fire, I will need to rise from the ashes and learn to wield my own power. Because my wings may have been clipped, but I am not in a cage, and I'm finally free to fly from the frozen kingdoms I've been kept in.

Yet, the world doesn't want to let me.

That's the thing when you turn against a king—everyone else turns against you.

Good thing I have a different king in my corner.

But even with the dark threat of Slade Ravinger, the other monarchs are coming for me.

So, I will fight for him, and he will kill for me, and if we need to become the villains, then so be it.

Because so long as I live in this world, I won't be used again.

Please note: This is an adult fantasy series with dark elements that may be triggering, including past emotional and physical trauma, violence, adult language, and explicit romance. Read at your own discretion.

Can’t wait for last book

Storey is very good, I didn’t like the audio, different to the first books and the narrator spoke to slowly and bland where there should have been more life given to the story. Can’t wait now for the next but will get book this time!

Good but too long

Book 2 and 3 were way better. Don’t get me wrong, this was good too but it was way too long and could’ve been 200(+~) pages shorter. Also, it feels like some of the characters are 2 dimensional and underdeveloped. Queen Malina is an example of that. Still the story was good and full of steamy scenes. I liked the personal growth Aren went through and I feel for all she has to endure.
I will care on the series as it finishes on a cliffhanger but I hope the next book is better.

Book good but narrator bad

There were several audio mistakes where she would mispronounce or sludder a word and then start from the beginning and say it again and it seems like they forgot to cut it out. Also the narrator for the previous books did it so much better.

I am so happy I read this book but am so sad that I have to wait for the next book. But can’t wait!

Almost Unpalatable

I really had to force myself to finish this one. for 2 reasons.

1. The actual story was terrible until the last 5 hours. Just so much brooding and self loathing and over thinking, paired with nothing actually happening. We got a few flash backs to their earlier years but the "present" was so boring. Finally they decide to actually do something and the story continues but not until almost the end. It was like this was a filler book to get from book 3 to 5.

2. The female narrator has gotten worse. She over enunciates every single word, like every sentence is the most dramatic thing to ever happen. And yet somehow there's hardly any emotion. I had to speed it up to 1.3× speed in order to handle it. Plus she mispronounces several words. Easy words. I mean, it's your job to read words and somehow you are saying them wrong? It gets hard to focus on the story.

I'm disappointed in this book and it's too bad because I like the series. Hoping the next one makes up for this one!

Loved it but….

The way the female narrator pronounces some of the words was completely taking me out of the story and making me question my own linguistic knowledge… at first it made me laugh, but then it made me question reality. male narrator was great

LOVED IT

5/5 ⭐️
3/5🌶️

Slade and Auren are just so good together. I love this world that Raven created and I am obsessed with the story and all the size characters.

I thoroughly enjoyed seeing Auren learning her magic and powers and seeing one to wield them and use them to her advantage. I loved seeing Slade support and love her throughout it all and the unconditional love he gave her.

I really enjoyed the side characters too and seeing the way the story played out. The cliffhanger was rough and I’m sad the next book isn’t out yet, but I can’t wait to see what happens next!

good story, performance so so

male performances were good. female performance was.. off... there were several points where it was grating and annoying. I love this series but even then it was hard to push through.

Interesting and yet disappointing

The overall story is interesting, but the introduction of a new story line with established characters was unneeded in some cases and ridiculous in others. Zara Blake’s narration has gone from bad to downright unbearable. I’m not sure if there are misspellings in the book or she is just pronouncing words incorrectly, but the editing of this book should have caught those. Aside from the jarring number of those mistakes there, her cadence and speed is grating. I’ve had the speed increased for the entire series because of how ridiculous her narration is. I go through a lot of audiobooks and this is by far the most annoying overall performance I’ve ever heard. It takes so much away from the overall feel of the story and makes you annoyed at the characters.

Fantastic Storyline, Drawling Narrator

I love the storyline and am always excited about what's going to happen next. The narrator does the different voices very well, spinning each with their own personality. However, at times, the narrator draws out the words of certain characters (Queen Molina for example) so much that I get irritated and have to raise the speed of the narration.
