About this listen

A battle looms, and she could lose everything....

Again and again, the same dreadful prediction...a remote prison fortress, a fierce battle, an unthinkable outcome.

For Jess Ballard, the signs could not be clearer; if the Durupinen want to maintain their control over the Gateways to the spirit world, they will have to battle for them at the ancient Skye Priosún, where even now a rebellion is brewing, ready to burst the barriers of the ancient stronghold. It is a near-impossible proposition. The very ranks of their protectors have been breached, and it is only a matter of time before the trust between Caomhnoir and Durupinen has all but disintegrated. The only chance the Durupinen have is to infiltrate the priosún from within - with nothing left to lose, Jess volunteers herself for the job.

But the dangers are very real. The Caomhnoir of the priosún have been compromised. Jess does not know who she can trust inside - even her once unshakable bond with Finn Carey is being tested. If she chooses wrongly-forms the wrong alliance or makes the wrong gamble - the fate of the spirit world could hang in the balance. The challenges are formidable...but so is the young woman facing them.

Great story, more offensive accents by a terrible narrator.

I listened to all of the Jess Ballard books, and Ii am reviewing them altogether.
Good: A great idea for a story. It could have been confusing but easy to follow and well written. Make sure you start with Spirit Legacy - I started The Gateway Tracker book one, which was the fourth book! The story kept me listening, and I liked the main character. The ending of the series was very good. The story references genuine groups and myths but is unique.
Bad: A couple of the books had a different narrator who had a beautiful southern U.S. accent, which didn't suit the character's background, but at least she could do a cockney accent and a Scottish one. Most of the books were nattated by somebody who is offensively bad.
The character of Finn is just awful. He has no personality, is a stereotype, and says "properly" on repeat in the first two books. His character is made much worse by the terrible narration, and his accent doesn't match his coloquialisms.
One character is referred to as " Cat Tree Owner" by every character - for the record, nobody in England, Scotland, or Ireland would pronounce Catriona that way! Nor would an English man call a route a "rowt."
Every Scottish character was mentally disturbed. Again, this may have been the narrator's fault, but possibly not.
The story is good, but a couple of things were never explained, such as why nobody outside the Duropinan world wondered where cremated bodies went, or whether scouted grooms knew the truth.
The story was dragged out too long, and would have been better as six or seven books.

Having said all of this, I still feel that the book series is excellent, but the narrator is appalling

Don’t Bother!

I’ve actually read this entire series of books and thoroughly enjoyed them. I’m a big fan of fantasy especially of stories with strong female protagonists. I thought it a good idea to invest in the audiobooks as sometimes it’s just nice to listen. I strongly advise that if your British not to listen as the narrator’s accents are offensive! She makes the Scottish and Cockney characters sound illiterate. As I am Scottish I can assure you that even those who speak broad Scots do not sound anything like her depiction! I mistakenly recommended these audiobooks to friends and family prior to listening to them first. We all agree the accents are just utterly awful and insulting and not enjoyable to listen too.
EE Holmes if you’re hoping to reach and entertain fans with your stories in other countries (especially Britain) I strongly advise you invest in a voice actor that is capable of performing in more than her native accent.
Lyssa Browne please get some voice coaching as I’ve never met any Scots or Cockneys that sound anything like your depiction. Your accents are that bad it’s impossible to listen to you read without getting irritated.
My advice to others is buy the books as the series is very good, do not waste your money on these awful audiobooks especially before you read the books as it probably will put you off them entirely and that would a real shame.
