Summary

It’s time to come home….

The Hull family has owned the Gallows Hill Winery for generations. The sprawling old house has long been perched on top of a hill overlooking the nearby town, jealously guarding the estate's secrets. Their wine wins awards. Their business prospers. Their family thrives—until Hugh and Maria Hull enter the dark halls of Gallows Hill one last time…and are found dead the next morning.

People whisper that the curse has awakened once more.

It’s been more than a decade since Margot Hull last saw her childhood home. She was young enough when she was sent away that she barely remembers its dark passageways and secret corners. But now she's returned to bury her parents and reconnect with the winery that is her family's legacy—and the bloody truth of exactly what lies buried beneath the crumbling estate. Alone in the sprawling, dilapidated building, Margot is forced to come face to face with the horrors of the past—and realize that she may be the next victim of a house that never rests....

An utter bore.

I struggled with this one.

The narration was awful and the protagonist sounded hysterical majority of the time.

On the story itself, the entire thing was just too far flung to believe and lacked plausibility. The protagonist made silly decisions / mistakes so many times. Generally just unlikeable. The spooks got tedious after a while. Maggots roiling in eye sockets of zombies - yawn…

I was also irritated by the fact that, despite being alone in a spooky old house all the time, her mobile phone was almost always never charged.

It’s unlikely I will seek out any more works by this author.

This book required Futher editing and development

I really enjoyed the story 'in parts' however up until chapter 20 I was bored, it was too descriptive (those words should have been spent on character development) I just didn't care about the characters because they lacked depth, a good book, a solid read but painful to get going. Narrator worked her socks off.

Chaotic performance

Its good, well worth the read/listen. I usually love Darcy Coates, this however is not her best work in my opinion. I did however like the ending a lot, which is always a big plus in my book! Some plot holes and confusing moments here and there, but on the whole its still goos.

Performance however is a different take. For the most part okay. But yeesh, do you have to yell quite so much? Also made the main character seem much whimpier and more frail than the story in it self made her out to be.

KAZ 🇬🇧😃 SO UMMM 🤔

I usually enjoy Darcy Coat's book's but after only hearing about 12 chapter's I'm getting ready to give up on this 📖 C'mon how many time's can you say Her mouth was dry or she ran her tongue over her teeth? not forgetting how she can't breathe in or out ENOUGH ALREADY PLZ!! SPOILER ALERT A young woman's parent's die so she goes back to the family home she hasn't been to for yr's & SHIT 💩 Begin's to happen She see's the bed where they died & say's she'd never sleep on that mattress but then climb's onto it I mean SERIOUSLY 😳 WHO WOULD DO THAT? ETC! ETC!! Sorry but unsure if I can listen to the rest of the LAME STORY SADLY 1 Out of 5 for storyline narration was ok but there's long silence's & part's so quiet had to go back to turning volume up high to hear plot's weak so overall it's a begrudging 2- from me not sure I'd reccommd it's supposed to be a horror story but lack's depth & definitely NOT GONNA KEEP ME UP AT NIGHT YAWN 😵

I loved it!

The narrator was perfect, the story was scary, nothing super distactingly hokey happened - this was one of Darcy Coates' best. I highly recommend. Couldnt put it down.

How is this not a movie?

First time listening to a horror book of sorts. I thought it was excellent and can’t wait to hear more of this author!

Her best one yet!

Just when I think she can’t do any better, she proves me wrong! This one kept a very creepy, suspenseful atmosphere throughout the entire book. I primarily listen during the day while I clean, and found myself jumping when my kids would tap my shoulder to get my attention!

Perfectly spooky and equally terrifying!

I'm rarely disappointed with Darcy Coates. I've bought everything she's ever written and liked them all save one. This one started a bit fast and the narrator was going for an emmy performance i think. Lauren Ezzo is clearly a talented actress and she was an excellent choice for this novel..... once i got over the beginning drama. I almost stopped listening because i thought the whole book was going to be breathless excitement, but it calmed down as the plot unraveled. I became much more invested in the characters about mid-way and had to listen much too late in the night to see what was around the corner. The ending was perfect without giving details and I'd like to see more of this story if Darcy decides to let it continue.

Whining narrator too annoying to listen to

I could not pay attention to the story due to the narrator’s whining voice and bad acting - she sounds like she is on the verge of tears. Do not bother listening to this performance unless you enjoy nails on a chalkboard.

Very Different and Unique

I absolutely loved the story. it wasn't like anything I had read before! Unique take on the "someone died and I inherited a random Haunted house" the characters weren't overly complex but enough to make you fall in love with them. the simplicities of the book really helped it not be oversaturated. the background you do get makes everything come together nicely.

really good.

this book was really good. I need to be clear that I absolutely love everything Darcy Coates has written. some of her books i have listened to over and over again. That being said I will say this one wasn't my favorite. I will absolutely listen to it again it was really good. I just felt it wasn't on par with how creepy and scary her books usually are. this would be a great book to start with if you haven't read her before or if you are just starting to read/listen to horror.

the narration was superb!

I will never look at wine the same way again!

Slow to start out but the story picked up quickly. A lot of twists and turns I did not see coming. The book remained eerie though the entire story. I would highly recommend.
